{"102521":{"#nid":"102521","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Georgia Tech Partners with Penn State to Form New Industry\/University Research Center","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EThe National\nScience Foundation (NSF) has approved an Industry\/University Cooperative\nResearch Center for Optical Wireless Applications (COWA), housed in the College\nof Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThe new center will\nbe mainly supported by participating industry members for the first five-year period, including seed funding from the NSF. It will substantially impact the\nadvanced technology of optical wireless systems and applications for imaging,\nsensing, and communication networks. A joint effort with Pennsylvania State\nUniversity, COWA will be led on the Georgia Tech side by Gee-Kung Chang,\nGeorgia Research Alliance (GRA) Eminent Scholar and Byers Endowed Professor in Optical\nNetworking at the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE). Mohsen\nKavehrad, a chair professor in the Department of\nElectrical Engineering, will lead the Center\u2019s efforts at Penn State.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe goal of the\ncenter is to foster an innovative research environment driven by industrial\nneeds to develop leading edge, radio-over-fiber technologies for delivering\nmulti-gigabit, multi-band wireless services over optical access networks with 100x\nmore capacity at higher bit rates and longer reach than current wireless\ncommunications. Four ECE professors at Georgia Tech\u2013Nikil S. Jayant, Raghupathy\nSivakumar, Stephen E. Ralph, and John R. Barry\u2013will work with Dr. Chang in this\nnew center.
