Moschella
Assistant Director, Center for Academic Success

For incoming Tech students, the transition to college is an exciting time: new friends, new living arrangements and new responsibilities. It is also a time of learning about the new expectations at college. To give incoming first-year Tech students an added advantage in a notorious difficult subject - calculus - the Center for Academic Success has created Tech PrEP, a program to develop and refine success skills for the college classroom and beyond.

The Tech Pre-Calculus Enrichment Program (Tech PrEP) is a partnership between Georgia Tech's Center for Academic Success and the School of Mathematics. This exciting summer program is designed to give entering Tech freshmen an added advantage in successfully completing their introductory calculus courses. Tech PrEP is a non-credit, two-week, intensive, residential program that will review fundamental pre-calculus concepts as well as introduce strategies critical for academic success in calculus and other first-year courses. Tech PrEP is designed to be an active, social and relaxed environment with the overall goal of giving new students a head start on their success at Tech.

What's Included?
* Meals each day (3 per day for students staying on-campus, 1 per day for commuter students);
* More than 40 hours of instructional time with a Tech faculty member;
* Participation in Georgia Tech’s Leadership Challenge Course;
* Peer-led academic support, academic success workshops, and program materials;
* Introduction to campus life and student living including peer-led team-building activities;
* Two weeks of housing in a Georgia Tech residence hall and early move-in to student's fall 2011 housing assignment; and
* Registration for a special section of GT1000.

What’s the Advantage?
In addition to reviewing the pre-calculus skills that professors at Tech have identified as critical to success in Calculus I and Calculus II, Tech PrEP allows students to become familiar with the campus and all of its resources. Another advantage is academic gains: participants in last year’s program earned 16 percent more “B” final grades in their calculus courses than non-participants and fewer “C” (13 percent), “D”, and “F” grades. In fact, no participants failed! Additionally, participants made connections with a current math faculty member and some outstanding peer leaders. Plus, developing friendships and study groups with other incoming first-year students is a great way to get prepared for the first semester at college.

The 2011 Tech PrEP program is from August 1-12. The cost is $955 for students staying on-campus and $550 for commuter students. Please note that commuting participants will have limited access to programming outside of regular instructional time.
