This summer the Outdoor Recreation department of Campus Recreation is traveling abroad to lead an international learning experience called the “Unbeaten Path” from June 3-6. This unique adventure takes Georgia Tech and Tianjin University students to a remote section of China’s Great Wall just north of Beijing that has been mostly untouched for the past several centuries. It’s an opportunity to experience Chinese culture first-hand, and observe rural regions of the country, home to some 500 million Chinese citizens.

Over the four-day trip, students explored their leadership capabilities as they hike remote sections of the Great Wall, built rafts with their teammates, learned about harvesting wild vegetables, and camped among ancient chestnut and peach orchards. Participation in various workshops, campfire storytelling, and sharing ideas about the qualities of effective leaders are just a few examples how students reflected on their views of life, ideas, and other cultures. The “Unbeaten Path” provided new perspectives on the skills - social, cultural, and professional - required for success in the global marketplace.

The “Unbeaten Path” is an exciting recreational trip and an opportunity to develop invaluable perspectives on leadership. Students are exploring differences in attitudes and values related to leadership, team responsibilities, motivation, and perceptions across cultures. In today’s growing global marketplace, the most successful leaders will be those who understand cultural differences and are capable of adapting behavior and attitudes about cultural differences in response to a range of situations.
