Financial Considerations for Attending Summer Semester

There are a number of financial items to consider if your student is planning to attend summer semester classes at Georgia Tech.

If your student is still under one of the guaranteed tuition plans (GTP, also known as Fixed for Four), it may make sense to take summer classes as a way to take advantage of the lower tuition rates offered under the GTP. Once the guarantee for your student expires, students that are still enrolled will pay the prevailing flat tuition rates (explained below) for that particular term. Of course, it is important for your student to work closely with an academic advisor to ensure that any classes taken “fit” with the remaining requirements for graduation. Please visit www.bursar.gatech.edu/TuitionFAQ.php for commonly asked questions regarding GTP plans and tuition rates.

If your student is not under a guaranteed tuition plan for summer semester, then he or she will be assessed the flat tuition rates. For summer 2011, in-state tuition under this schedule will be assessed at either $2,100 per semester if registered for 6 hours or fewer or $3,535 if registered for more than 6 hours. Out-of-state students will pay either $7,500 tuition per semester if registering for 6 hours or fewer or $12,640 if registering for more than 6 hours. It is important to be aware of these rates when determining your student’s class schedule and the cost associated with the various options. For more information regarding your student’s specific tuition and fee charges for summer 2011, please visit the Bursar’s website at www.bursar.gatech.edu. If you still have questions, contact the Office of the Bursar at 404.894.4618 or by e-mail at bursar.ask@business.gatech.edu.

The Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid evaluates eligibility for state and federal aid, including education loans, for the summer semester. All of these programs are available to students enrolled in six credit hours. Students planning to attend Tech for summer semester should check their 2010-2011 Georgia Tech Application for Scholarships and Financial Aid online to ensure that they indicated summer enrollment. If the summer semester is not listed as a term of enrollment, the student should e-mail revisions@finaid.gatech.edu to have this updated. Additional information about financial aid for summer semester is available at www.finaid.gatech.edu/summer. If you have any questions, contact the advisor listed at www.finaid.gatech.edu.
