It is important for everyone to prepare for severe weather events, especially pop-up thunderstorms that frequently occur in the southeast. The \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.police.gatech.edu\/emergencypreparedness\/\u0022\u003EGeorgia Tech Police Department Office of Emergency Preparedness\u003C\/a\u003E encourages students, faculty and staff to be prepared by developing a plan, assembling a disaster supply kit, and signing up for emergency notification.\n\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech alerts the campus community when there is a Tornado Warning, which means tornadoes have been detected on radar or visually identified. All students receive e-mail alerts. In order to receive emergency alerts on their cell phones via voicemail and text message, students must sign up for the Georgia Tech Emergency Notification System (GTENS) at \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/passport.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003Ewww.passport.gatech.edu\u003C\/a\u003E. Georgia Tech also has an outdoor siren warning system to alert students who are travelling between classes. Parents can receive alerts from the Office of Emergency Preparedness through our \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Georgia-Tech-Office-of-Emergency-Preparedness\/126611404040939?sk=wall\u0022\u003EFacebook\u003C\/a\u003E and Twitter pages and by calling the Institute Inclement Weather Hotline at 404.894.0500. Campus community members are also encouraged to visit the Institute website for information and updates during disasters and events.\n\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0022The best thing to do to protect yourself is to have a plan of action before a threatening tornado or other weather event develops,\u0022 says Georgia Tech Emergency Preparedness director Andy Altizer. \u00e2\u0080\u009cKnow what to do and where to go if there is a tornado warning. Don\u00e2\u0080\u0099t depend on us to have enough time to alert you to sudden weather changes. If there is a chance of severe weather, pay attention and be prepared to take action.\u00e2\u0080\u009d\n\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003ESevere weather can occur anytime, so it is important that individuals remain diligent in their preparedness efforts.
