{"110071":{"#nid":"110071","#data":{"type":"news","title":"INTA and College of Engineering jointly host speaker on biotechnology and international affairs","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003ELast week, Mr. Chris Park spoke on\n\u201cBiotechnology, National Security, and International Affairs: Stories from the\nFront Lines.\u201d Mr. Park, who serves as director of the Office of \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.state.gov\/t\/isn\/156789.htm\u0022\u003EBiological Policy\nStaff\u003C\/a\u003E in the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.state.gov\/t\/isn\/\u0022\u003EBureau of International Security and Nonproliferation\u003C\/a\u003E at\nthe \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.state.gov\/\u0022\u003EUS Department of\nState\u003C\/a\u003E, shared some of his own observations and personal analysis on the\ndual-use challenges facing the US government in preventing the proliferation of\nbiotechnology for deadly harm, while recognizing that modern biotechnology is\nrapidly changing, readily available, and commercially less and less expensive\nevery day.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;He highlighted a broad range of US efforts to prevent the\nproliferation and use of biological weapons by state or non-state actors and to\nincrease international readiness to deal with biological events, including\nparticipation in the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.state.gov\/t\/isn\/bw\/index.htm\u0022\u003EBiological Weapons Convention\u003C\/a\u003E (BWC) implementation\nand review process.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EMr. Park has previously served as the Bureau\u2019s\nSenior Advisor on Bioterrorism.\u0026nbsp;Before that, he was senior desk officer\nfor the Chemical Weapons Convention, where he dealt, at various times, with\nverification of chemical industry, chemical weapons destruction, budget\nnegotiations, and other matters.\u0026nbsp;Prior to this, he spent two years in The\nHague as a member of the U.S. Delegation to the Preparatory Commission for the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.opcw.org\/\u0022\u003EOrganization for the Prohibition of\nChemical Weapons\u003C\/a\u003E (OPCW).\u0026nbsp;He got his start at the Department\nin the Bureau of International Organization Affairs, where he prepared guidance\nand served on delegations to a variety of major international organizations.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EPark\u2019s talk was sponsored by the GT\u2019s \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cistp.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ECenter for International\nStrategy, Technology, and Policy\u003C\/a\u003E (CISTP) and by the GT-FIRE\nproject on \u0022\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.inta.gatech.edu\/mission\/news-and-events\/news\/kosal-funded-biotechnology-and-security-curricula-development-work,\u0022\u003EEducating a Biotechnology Policy \u0026amp; Security Workforce\u003C\/a\u003E\u0022\nwhich is co-directed by Nunn School Assistant Professor, \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.inta.gatech.edu\/people\/faculty\/margaret-e-kosal\u0022\u003EMargaret E.
