{"112091":{"#nid":"112091","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Technique Earns Broad Recognition from Georgia Collegiate Press","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EThe Technique, long heralded as the \u201cSouth\u2019s liveliest\ncollege newspaper,\u201d recently earned a new honor to accompany its lively claims.\nThe Georgia Collegiate Press Association awarded the student-run newspaper\nfirst place in general excellence in its 2011 Better Newspaper Contest.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThe Technique placed in numerous categories, including first\nin general excellence, best review and best campus community service (sports).\nIt also earned second place in best review, as well as in best photograph\n(sports), best editorial or editorial series, best website and best community\nservice (features). It earned third in layout and design, best campus community\nservice (editorial) and best campus community service (news). The first place\nawards all were earned in categories where the Technique did not win last year.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cI\u2019m really proud of the whole staff for doing as well as\nthey did. We got more individual awards this year, which is really impressive\nand a testament to the talent we have,\u201d said Editor-in-Chief Vijai Narayanan. \u201cThis\nisn\u2019t something you can do if it doesn\u2019t resonate with you \u2014 it\u2019s too much for\njust for your resume.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003ESince assuming the leadership role last year, Narayanan and\nhis staff have worked to keep readers top of mind and be in tune with those who\nthey serve, aiming to strike a balance between content people find interesting\nand what\u2019s relevant or important to students but not necessarily as enticing.\nMany sections have been revamped, including the Focus and Sports sections.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cSports was one we had wanted to win for a long time,\u201d\nNarayanan said of the GCPA honors. \u201cI\u2019m really proud of Alex [Sohani] \u2026 he\u2019s\nreally geared the section to the average sports fan.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EIn Other News...\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EAside from earning the GCPA recognitions this year, Narayanan\nhas started a business team to sell advertising and is analyzing distribution\nto make sure the right amount of copies of the newspaper are in the right\nplaces on campus \u2014 in addition to leading a staff in putting out a paper each\nweek.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cWe\u2019re very fortunate that most students come [to the\nTechnique] wanting to write, and we want them to feel like they\u2019re improving,\u201d\nNarayanan said. \u201cNot just their style, but also as reporters \u2014 it\u2019s an\nimportant skill to have. It helped me come out of my shell, be more\ninquisitive, be better at gathering information from people \u2014 it\u2019s very useful,\nnot just in stories.\u201d In addition to writing, the Technique also provides\ncreative outlets for its design and photography teams and business experience for\nits sales team. \u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EOf course, staff members are not the only ones whose words\nappear in the Technique. Students submit hundreds of slivers each week hoping\nto get a few words in the next issue. The Technique lifted the idea for slivers\nfrom the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in the early 2000s, and it began as a\nslim box along the bottom of each page with random musings by editors. A few\nyears later, sliver submissions opened to all students on \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/nique.net\u0022\u003Enique.net\u003C\/a\u003E. The curator of these anonymous messages\nmaintains his or her own anonymity in compiling them each week.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cWhat goes in is really at the discretion of the person who\nputs them in the paper,\u201d said Narayanan. \u201cThe things I love are the ones that,\nif you read it, you know it\u2019s about you but no one else would.\u201d Slivers are\nadded to the paper each Wednesday night during the Technique\u2019s production.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThe Technique\u2019s weekly Tuesday night staff meetings \u2014 which\ninclude free pizza \u2014 are open to all students interested in any aspect of the\npaper\u2019s operation.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cEverything we do is a smaller version of what gets done in\nthe real world,\u201d Narayanan said. \u201cWe have a physical product at the end of the\nevery week and something to show for what we\u2019ve done.
