Simmons composed a \nnew work for piano that incorporated rhythmic sound bites collected by \nGeorgia Tech students using the Center for Music Technology\u2019s \ncutting-edge Urban Remix platform for sound capture and remixing.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAs \nthe Ferst Center\u2019s ARTech resident artist for 2011-12, Simmons \ncollaborated with academic units across campus and interacted with \nhundreds of students. In the ARTech program, artists explore the \nconnection between art and technology, visiting the Georgia Tech campus \nto develop work that employs science or technology as an integral part \nof the creative development process. In her residency Simmons explored \nthe ways rhythm is integral to music, technology and human interaction.\u0026nbsp; \u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ECampus\n collaborations were extensive in the residency this year. \u0026nbsp;Since last \nOctober Simmons:\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003EMet with students in English 101 and \n102 classes;\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003EAttended a National Pan-Hellenic Council \nSorority Tea;\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003EHeld a master class in piano for \nstudents;\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003EWorked with Shimon, Georgia Tech\u2019s \nimprovising robotic musician;\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003EMet with GT1000 for a \nclass on \u201cStress, Success and the Arts\u201d;\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003ELed a \nsymposium on \u201cImplications of Race and Gender in Classical Performance\u201d;\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003EAttended\n a Student Arts Reception;\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003EMet with a Georgia Tech \nMusic Appreciation class;\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003EMet with Women In \nArchitecture to discuss \u201cThe Creative Impulse\u201d; and\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003EWas\n a special guest performer at Georgia Tech Black Alumni Organization\u0027s \n\u0022Legends and Leaders\u0022 event celebrating the 50th anniversary of the \nmatriculation of Georgia Tech\u0027s first African-American students.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIn\n addition, Simmons conducted three outreach workshops with younger \nstudents at Drew Charter School, Centennial Place Elementary School and \nKennedy Middle School.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIn the concluding concert at the Ferst Center,\n Simmons performed a piece written by Georgia Tech professor Gil \nWeinberg with Shimon, Georgia Tech\u0027s improvising robotic musician. The \nconcert also featured saxophonist and electronic musician Jonathan \nSanford and percussionist\/composer Craig Hauschildt. \u0026nbsp; \u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe goal of \nthe ARTech Residency program is to engage one or more performing artists\n each season to work with identified faculty and students and to \ndemonstrate how art and technology intersect to impact the creative \nprocess and ultimately affect our daily lives. Collaborations will \nemphasize a particular exploration of the arts and science or technology\n that has a unique connection with Georgia Tech.
