LCC 3410 Course Description:
Images are powerful, enabling you to translate experience, capture an instant, change perspectives, clarify (or create) ambiguity, and shape representations. A series of readings will encourage you to explore views about images, including aesthetic, philosophical, and technical. Throughout the course, you will write and speak about images, but you will also spend considerable time presenting creative and technical images—with and without digital manipulation—in a variety of genre, including photo narratives, representations of science, portraits, reflections, and translations.

Artist's statement
This work is an experiment in digital media. Thisexperiment is based on the question: Can we produce difference and particularidentity by using the default functions of the computer? This questionengenders the dialectic between two competing and mostly mutually exclusiverealms;  of virtuality and embodiment. Inusing a system of software and hardware, our intellectual and physical productsare both facilitated and limited by the technology. Is it possible  to discover and exploit the limitations ofthis system? Can we then produce objects and images that appear to be uniquelyconceived and whose digital DNA is melded with our own?

About the artist
Harris Dimitropoulos has taught art, design, and theorycourses in Europe and in the United States. He is an associate professor in theSchool of Architecture at Georgia Tech, where he has taught for more than 25years. Currently his creative interests explore issues of representation andaesthetics, especially as they pertain to digital media. Dimitropoulos receiveda Master of Architecture from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1984, a PhDfrom the Aristoteleion University in Thessaloniki, Greece, and a Bachelor ofArchitecture N.T.U. in Athens, Greece. In addition to his architecturaleducation, he received formal art education from 1970 to 1983. Hisarchitectural and art work has been exhibited in Europe and in the UnitedStates, and his project "Bastilles" was chosen for the commemorationof the Bicentennial of the French Revolution in 1989.

Kathleen Ann Goonan has been at the vanguard of literary science fiction since the publication of her New York Times Notable Book QUEEN CITY JAZZ in 1994, garnering starred reviews in all major review journals, such as PW, Kirkus, and Booklist, for each of her six novels. A literary stylist, she melds cutting-edge science with strong characterization, history, jazz, and

what PW described as " . . . the work of a powerful imagination with a superior command of language." Her work has been the subject of articles as widely varied as Scientific American's "Shamans of the Small" in their special Nanotechnology issue and scholarly papers in literary journals, and has been studied at UCR, MIT, RIT, and other universities. Goonan has been

invited to speak at international literary festivals, such as Kosmopolis in Barcelona and Utopioles in Nantes, government think tanks, and in university settings. Her novels have been finalists for the Arthur C. Clarke Award, BSFA, and Nebula Awards. IN WAR TIMES won the Campbell Award for Best Science Fiction Novel of 2007 and was also the American Library

Association's choice of Best Science Fiction Novel of the year. With a degree in English from Virginia Tech and Association Montessori Internationale training, Goonan has worked in bookstores, as a packer for a moving company, and in her own 100-student Montessori school. She is presently a Visiting Professor at Georgia Institute of Technology, where she

teaches Creative Writing, Literature, and Science, Technology and Ideology.

The Robert C. Williams Paper Museum is pleased to present an exhibition focusing on the explorations of papermaker Dard Hunter. The exhibit will showcase stories and artifacts gathered by Hunter as he traveled the world documenting traditional papermaking techniques. Papermaking by hand had all but vanished in the United States with the arrival of the Industrial Age. Between the two World Wars, Hunter an artist, printer, and papermaker of the Arts and Crafts Movement observed ancient papermaking techniques in Europe, Thailand, Japan, China, India, and the South Pacific. On his trips he collected paper and papermaking tools, and when he returned he wrote about his experiences in individually crafted books. This exhibit brings to life a new perspective on Dard Hunter, a man who once said, “I have the feeling that more can be learned about a strange country and its people by associating with the natives themselves.”

This exhibition was researched, planned, and designed by Georgia Tech students as part of a unique and interactive class in Museum Studies. The class consists of 16 undergraduate students from a variety of majors including Engineering, Architecture, HTS, and International Affairs. Come out and support the students of HTS 3823, Museum Studies!

The event includes:

• The first public screening of the Georgia Tech “It Gets Better” video. It Gets Better is a national movement to reduce bullying and suicides among LGBT youth.
• A 45-minute talk-back with the video’s producers and several featured participants, who will offer a behind-the-scenes discussion of the videomaking process, discuss their experiences with coming out and the coming out process, and invite comments and questions from the audience;
• A Storytellers-style performance by Matt Morris, a nationally-recognized musician and songwriter, who has worked with Sarah McLachlan, Justin Timberlake, Kelly Clarkson, the Indigo Girls, and Charlie Sexton. He will perform an acoustic set and speak about coming out, community, social media, and songwriting.

This event is presented by the Alpha Sigma chapter of La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Inc.

'The Adam Stephens Night Out for Poetry' featuring Carl Dennis and Kate Johnson.

Thomas Lux, the Margaret T. and Henry C. Bourne, Jr. Chair in Poetry introduces the Tenth Annual Bourne Poetry Reading, featuring Stephen Dobyns and Cynthia Cruz.

How are our imagination and our understanding inspired by our ability to visualize?

These are the questions that have drawn faculty and students from the Colleges of Engineering, Liberal Arts, Computing, and Architecture at Georgia Tech to organize an exhibition and a conversation around the theme, “Vision: I Imagine, I See, I Make.”

This two-week-long salon will demonstrate how student and faculty creativity at Georgia Tech challenges the divide between engineering, science, and the arts. It will be an experimental platform for advancing trans-disciplinary education at Tech; and connecting to like minds in Atlanta, thus redefining the public context of our creative efforts.

Exhibits range from attempts to understand the multiple facets of traffic modeling and management, to exploring the connection between visualization and music; from architectural projects, to virtual game worlds; and from discussions of how innovation is expressed in patents, to discussions of the role of computational models in the making of new forms of ornament.

THE TRAFFIC ROOM, featuring a three-channel projection of three different projects:

• Traffic Reports, stories about accidents (Ruth Dusseault, Architecture). This project is meant to help bridge the gap between the aerial perspective of the traffic reporter and the human experiences that occur on the ground.
• Traffic Analysis, design modeling program (Mike Hunter, Civil Engineering).
• Smog is Democratic, visualization of pollution statistics (Carl DiSalvo and Jonathan Lukens, Literature, Communication, and Culture). This project explores particulate matter through the medium of data visualization to generate reflection, discussion, and debate.

HEARING VISION, using computer vision to represent visual information in the sonic realm. These projects point to the ways in which music technology, especially through its practice at Georgia Tech, can engage data and ideas from beyond the musical realm – whether ocean levels or gene sequences – both to help researchers and the public “hear” them from a new perspective and to inspire new modes of musical expression.

• Stickies Music (Jason Freeman and Sang Won Lee, Music), turning an organizational system based on post-it notes into a collaborative space for musical play.

• Music with the Eye (Mason Bretan, Music) turns the camera back on our own eyes, tracking eye movement and dilation to create a powerful musical performance system.
• Sound floor (recycling sleepers from Beltline railway tracks).

JOURNALISM AT PLAY Cartoonist (Ian Bogost and Simon Ferrari, Literature, Communication, and Culture) is a single player videogame engine with "skins" (contextual image layers) and mechanics (game structures and allowed actions) that morph or change as the player proceeds through his or her play session. Drawing from local and national news, Cartoonist connects real-world events, actions, and actors through the rules and structures of traditional arcade games.

TOWER OF BABEL - CASTLE IN THE SKY (Daniel Baerlacken’s studio, Architecture). A tower made up of empty bottles. An installation built on a narrative of sustainability that calls for increased environmental awareness as well as shifting behavioral paradigms. Using recyclable products for construction, clothing hangers, and plastic beverage bottles, the project serves to communicate the failures of different levels of consumption. Like the Babel myth, the current trends of disposable consumerism represent the great tragedy and failure of modern-day consumption. Project team includes Abaan Ali, Zachary Brown, Colleen Creighton, Christina Deriso, David Duncan, Bradley King, Chris Martin, Caleb Meister, Eric Morris, Amyn Mukadam-Soldier, and Brittany Utting.

GO1N-23/20, OR, 15 QUESTIONS TO ASK 30 PATENTS (Thomas Lodato) explores the data and meta-data associated patents from x-ray backscatter imaging (international category id: G01N-23/20) to present a view of patents participating within, rather than simply reflecting, socio-techinical systems.

VISUALIZING THE INVISIBLE This project by Gernot Riether's, Jude Le Blanc's, and Tim Harrison's studios in the School of Architecture explores the use of digital tools in a design process. The project looks at procedurally generated concepts in an inhabitable "landscape" and wall-mounted drawings showing the progressive design process.  

TANGLE JUNGLE  In the carpets of William Morris, ornament has acquired the capacity to interlace, to weave and to form knots, close to the Celtic knotwork of the first millennium. Tangle Jungle uses Morrisian algorithms of interlacing, tendriling, and bifurcating to create a three-dimensional system of vines that goes beyond a world of mere drapery, to become architectural structure itself. Project team includes Lars Spuybroek and Sabri Gokmen and students Yinzi Tan, Katherine Elizabeth Cooper Dunatov, Zachary Damon Brown, Katherine Giraldo, Amyn Mukadam-Soldier, Abaan Muhammad Ali, Aaron Robert Coffman, and Michael Douglas Bennett.

A SALON WITHIN THE SALON  Fishbowl discussion of Silent Barrage, a video of a closed loop conversation with a robot instructed and controlledby networks of neurons. Silent Barrage was researched and developed at SymbioticA, The Centre of Excellence in Biological Arts at The School of Anatomy & Human Biology, University of Western Australia, and Dr. Steve Potter's lab within the Lab forNeuroengineering at Georgia Tech.

Music for Kinect, Four Hands- Nathan Weitzner, Sidharth Subramanian
Two performers use their hand movements as controls for real-time composition, improvisation, and performance. The music is a manifestation of each performer’s individual choices blending into the composition through the interdependence of harmony and melody.

MISTory- Yingja Liu, Sisi Sun, Kai Sheng, Mason Bretan
Body poses and hand gestures are used to manipulate a simulated visual of smoke. As the smoke moves and changes audio is generated and morphed. The end result is a sonic “story” derived from the performer’s movements and simulated visuals.

Game Room- Andrew Colella, Aaron Albin, Luke Heerman, Neeraj Vaidya
Players match each others’ rhythmic movements in this musical adaptation of the game “horse”. As players challenge each other sounds are activated, collectively creating an evolving musical piece.

Crossole- Sang Won Lee, Avinash Sastry, Anosh Daruwalla, Sertan Senturk
Meaning crossword of music, Crossole is a musical instrument where music is visualized as a set of virtual blocks that resemble a crossword puzzle. The performer controls music by manipulating the crossword blocks using hand movements and foot stomps.

Interpretations- Mason Bretan
Featuring Shimon, Georgia Tech’s resident robotic marimba player, Interpretations is a duet for drum set and robot. As the drummer improvises Shimon makes intelligent improvised melodic responses. The responses are based on the melodic and rhythmic interpretations of these transitions and other patterns in the drummer’s play.

Bokaer will utilize a new technology solution, Mass Mobile, created by College of Computing master's student Stephen Garrett.  Mass Mobile allows audience members to engage with the performace through a smart phone application.  In this performance, Mass Mobile will enable the audience to influencing the lighting.

Those are some of the key themes and central sentiments you will discover in the three gems selected from the increasingly prominent corpus of independent Chinese cinema. Through them we hope to offer a brief yet fruitful insight in Chinese society today, as updated as within the past decade, and try together to understand and perhaps share the country's changes, charms, and challenges as experienced and contemplated by the Chinese not only as groups but also as individuals.

Following the showcase, the Computing Alumni Organization will host a reception (7-8 PM) at which GVU Director Keith Edwards will discuss the center and its mission. Please RSVP at their website

The traveling exhibit, which will be at Georgia Tech until March 20, is being housed at the Institute’s Library, located at 704 Cherry St., in the Neely Gallery.

The exhibit is free and open to the public. A photo ID is required for entry into the library. Exhibit hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.

Co-sponsored by the steering committee for the yearlong celebration of the 50th anniversary of the matriculation of the first black students to Tech and the Georgia Tech Athletic Association, the exhibit was brought to campus as part of the anniversary celebration.

The Shades of Greatness exhibit was developed in 2003 by the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, Mo. The museum commissioned artists to create 35 works that interpret various themes and stories from Negro Leagues history.

A special program highlighting the exhibit will be held 4 p.m. on March 3 in room 105 of the Smith Building. The symposium will feature speaker James A. Riley, dean of Negro League history. It will also include a panel discussion by Douglas Flamming, professor in the School of History, Technology and Society, Ivan Allen College; Lucius Sanford, executive director of the Letterwinner Association, Georgia Tech Athletic Association; and Danny Hall, head baseball coach, Georgia Tech Athletic Association.

The panel will be moderated by Eleanor Alexander, associate professor in the School of History, Technology and Society and is sponsored by Georgia Tech’s Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts.

Join us as we raise funds for United 4 Safety, an organization that works to reduce the intimate partner violence within the LGBTQQI community by improving the understanding of and response to intimate partner violence through education, training and resource development.

Doors will open at 6:45, and parking is free in the IC parking deck. A dessert reception will be held afterward for friends and family of the cast.

Rupert Fike has been nominated for a Pushcart prize in both fiction and poetry. His work has appeared in Rosebud, The Georgetown Review, Natural Bridge, The Atlanta Review, storySouth, and others. He won the Snake Nation Review's national single poem competition in 2007, and he has a poem inscribed in a downtown Atlanta plaza. His non-fiction work, "Voices from The Farm," accounts of life on a spiritual community in the 1970s, is now available in paperback.

Blake Leland has had poems published in The Atlanta Review, Commonweal, Epoch, Indiana Review, The New Yorker, and a number of electronic journals. Born and raised in Massachusetts, he has taught in the School of Literature, Communication, and Culture at Georgia Tech since 1988.

Intracellular delivery of polyphosphonates: The chemistry and biology of bisphosphonamidate prodrugs

Bisphoshonates are used clinically to treat disorders of calcium metabolism, hypercalcemia and osteoporosis, and malignant bone disease. Although these agents are commonly used in cancer patients and have potential direct anticancer effects, their use for the treatment of extraskeletal disease is limited as a result of poor cellular uptake. We have designed and synthesized bisphosphonamidate prodrugs that undergo intracellular activation to release the corresponding bisphosphonate and require only two enzymatic activation events to unmask multiple negative charges. We demonstrate efficient bisphosphonamidate activation and significant enhancement in anticancer activity of two bisphosphonamidate prodrugs in vitro compared to the parent bisphosphonate. These data suggest a novel approach to optimizing the anticancer activities of commonly used bisphosphonates.
