A Symposium hosted by the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts School of Literature,Communication, and Culture

Thursday, November 17, 2011 

On Thursday, November 17, the School of Literature, Communication and Culture will host a day-long symposium spotlighting science fiction as a signature intersection of science, technology, and humanistic studies at Georgia Tech.

The symposium will feature a series of scholarly panels involving faculty members from various disciplines, showcasing their involvement in science fiction study across various media, as a cultural phenomenon, and as it relates to issues of scientific and technical development. The symposium will also feature a presentation on the Science Fiction Collection at Georgia Tech (recently cited by Science Fiction Studies as one of the twenty most important such collections in the world), a report on student activities in the Science Fiction Research Lab at Tech, and readings by award-winning and critically-acclaimed science fiction authors Kathleen Ann Goonan, Eugie Foster, J.M. McDermott and Chesya Burke.

All presentations will be in Skiles Room 02. The Georgia Tech and Atlanta communities are invited to attend.

The AMP is being developed based on the recommendation ofthe President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST), whichreleased a report on June 24, 2011 entitled “Ensuring Leadership in AdvancedManufacturing.”  The PCAST report calls for a partnership betweengovernment, industry, and academia to identify the most pressing challenges andtransformative opportunities to improve the technologies, processes andproducts across multiple manufacturing industries.

Amongst the Georgia Tech AMP participants is Jennifer Clark,Associate Professor in the School of Public Policy and a member of the Centerfor Organic Photonics and Electronics. She will be participating in two working groups—policy and sharedfacilities as well as facilitating break-out groups at the meeting

According to Clark, “The Advanced Manufacturing Partnershipis an opportunity for stakeholders concerned about expanding the U.S. role inhigh-tech manufacturing to influence how federal R&D investment is directedtoward that goal of connecting R&D capacity to production networks in theU.S.”

Commenting on Georgia Tech’s role, Clark added, “As one ofthe leading research universities in the US with extensive experience in connectinginnovations to industry, Georgia Tech has a history of investing in enablingtechnologies and developing policy models capable of moving innovativeresearch out of the university and into the production of more sustainable andefficient materials and products. This capacity is critical to the nationalpriorities of job creation (especially green jobs) and energy independence. Sharingthis expertise is also consistent with Georgia Tech's economic developmentpriorities. “

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE?
Recognizing the interdependence of the efforts between academia, industry, not-for-profits, foundations, private investment, and government needed to move scientific discoveries to practical application, the Second Annual Academic & Industry Intersection Conference seeks to profile successful collaborations as well as examine potential ethical pitfalls related to the life science partnerships.

WHO ARE THE ORGANIZERS?
ACTSI, led by Emory University with partners Morehouse School of Medicine and Georgia Institute of Technology, and Georgia Bio, the state’s life sciences industry association, have organized this conference to provide critical information on how academia and industry along with other important players can work together.

The program will include panelists from academia, industry, not-for-profits, foundations, private investment, and government discussing the challenges and successes of their relationships. In addition, Emory President Jim Wagner will deliver the key note address discussing ethical considerations of academic industry partnerships.

Abstract:
A minor revolution is occurring in mass spectrometry with the growing recognition that it is possible to use simplify sample preparation time and still obtain significant chemical information on complex real-world samples. At the core of this development is a set of ambient ionization experiments in which ionization is performed in air, outside the mass spectrometry using a charged spray (desorption electrospray ionization, DESI) or other simple (and fast) procedure. Samples can also be ionized directly from a substrate such as paper or plant material (paper spray, PS) or by using low temperature plasma for ionization. DESI is applied in disease diagnosis by imaging tissue sections for their lipid distributions. These methods give qualitative and quantitative information on particular systems. In the case of DESI, an imaging experiment utilizes the spatial distribution of the chemical information collected for multiple analytes from the mass spectrometer to analyze histological sections of biological tissue. Examples of disease diagnostics in human bladder, liver and brain cancer will be given. The low temperature plasma ionization method is applied to food safety including bacterial identification. The very simple ionization method of paper spray is applied to quantitation of therapeutic drugs in whole blood in a few seconds. The combination of these ambient ionization techniques with miniature mass spectrometers allows rapid in situ analysis, at home, in the grocery store, on the factory floor. Applications of mass spectrometry to guide surgical decision-making in real time are just one of the outcomes indicated by the data described. So too are in situ real-time measurements of drug levels in blood, agrochemical residues in foods, and many other applications of complex mixture analysis.

About the Speaker: 
Graham Cooks is a Henry Bohn Hass Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at Purdue University and Director of the Center for Analytical Instrumentation Development. He is a pioneer in the conception and implementation of MS/MS and of desorption ionization. These interests led to the construction of miniature ion trap mass spectrometers and their application to problems of trace chemical detection. His work on ionization methods has contributed to the ambient ionization methods including desorption electrospray ionization. Some inventions and concepts introduced by Cooks are ion soft landing, neutral loss scans, the use of matrices in ionization, multiple reaction monitoring (MRM), single reaction monitoring (SRM), hybrid mass spectrometers, handheld mass spectrometers, the kinetic method of thermochemical determination and MS/MS for mixture analysis.

Cooks is a past president of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry and the International Mass Spectrometry Society and a Life Member of the British Mass Spectrometry Society. He is the recipient of the ACS awards in Mass Spectrometry and in Analytical Chemistry, the Robert Boyle and Centennial Medals of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

ABSTRACT: The internet is causing a radical change in how science is done. In this talk Michael Nielsen will describe how mass online collaborations are being used to prove mathematical theorems; how online markets are allowing scientific problems to be outsourced; and how online citizen science projects are enabling amateurs to make scientific discoveries. 

These and other projects show how we can use online tools to amplify our collective intelligence, and so extend our scientific problem-solving ability. This promise is only part of the story, however, for today there are many cultural barriers inhibiting scientists from using online tools to their full potential. Dr. Nielsen will discuss these cultural barriers, and how they can be overcome.

BIO: Michael Nielsen is an author and an advocate of open science. His book about open science, Reinventing Discovery, will be published by Princeton University Press in 2011. Prior to his book, Michael was an internationally known scientist who helped pioneer the field of quantum computation. He co-authored the standard text in the field, and wrote more than 50 scientific papers, including invited contributions to Nature and Scientific American. His work on quantum teleportation was recognized in Science Magazine's list of the Top Ten Breakthroughs of 1998. Michael was educated at the University of Queensland, and as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of New Mexico. He worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory, as the Richard Chace Tolman Prize Fellow at Caltech, was Foundation Professor of Quantum Information Science and a Federation Fellow at the University of Queensland, and a Senior Faculty Member at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics. In 2008, he gave up his tenured position to work fulltime on open science.

Michael Ra lectures widely on building skin systems, materiality, highlighting explorations to better the process of designing, making and building. This expertise comes from his background of education and professional practice. Ra graduated with Bachelor of Architecture degree with High Honors from the Illinois Institute of Technology,then worked with Dewhurst Macfarlane and Partners to develop the innovations of structural glass applied in the first Apple stores in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles before co-founding and co-partnering Front, a design and façade consulting firm. Projects of the firm have included high performance envelope systems for the Walker Art Center, the Toledo Museum of Art, World Trade Center Pavilion, St Louis Art Museum, Highline 23 Condominiums, CMA Tower and KAUST.

Mil-OSS exists to improve technology development and innovation across the Department of Defense by connecting and empowering the active community of patriotic open source developers and solution providers, improving use of the taxpayers' funds through thorough requirements extraction, wise execution, and increasing the speed new technologies enable the Warfighter.

Created last year in Beijing at the Global StandardsCollaboration (GSC)-15, the GSC M2M Standardization Task Force was charged tofacilitate global coordination and harmonize M2M standardization bycoordinating with a wide range of M2M players. The goal of the September meetingis to map out activities and make recommendations for future and currentstandardization priorities to GSC, a forum forthe collaboration of the world’s leading telecommunications standardsorganizations and the International Telecommunication Union (ITIU).

M2M is defined as connecting two machines that are nottypically carried in a user’s pocket—such as a refrigerator, vending machine oroven—where they can communicate across a network with little or no human intervention. “Forexample, a vending machine can let a supply system know that it’s out of product,which will then arrange for a delivery of more—without human involvement,” saidRon Bohlander, associate director for Business Operations &Commercialization at GTRI’s Information and Communications Laboratory(ICL).

C21U Director Rich DeMillo, current Distinguished Professor and former dean of the Georgia Tech College of Computing, is the author of Abelard to Apple: The Fate of American Colleges and Universities (MIT Press, August 2011). He's said that, as one of the top engineering and technological universities in the world, Georgia Tech has an opportunity to lead in an examination of how disruptive forces--most, but not all, related to technology--will change education. The College of Computing's undergraduate computer science curriculum, Threads, as well as Georgia Tech's state-of-the-art G. Wayne Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons (due to open Fall 2011), are just two examples of the Institute's incorporation of cultural and technological trends into its academic mission and curricula.

Keynote speaker Leroy Hood, MD, PhD, a pioneer in biotechnology and genomics and founder of the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle, will discuss the promise of personalized medicine for improving health care. While at Caltech, Hood and his colleagues developed the DNA sequencer and synthesizer and the protein synthesizer and sequencer – four instruments that paved the way for successful mapping of the human genome.

A panel discussion including scientists from Emory University, Morehouse School of Medicine and Georgia Tech will explore recent advances in personalized medicine and Georgia’s leadership in this innovative field.

About Vision: I Imagine, I See, I Make

How is what we engineer and design guided by what we can imagine? How are our imagination and our understanding inspired by our ability to visualize? These are the questions that have drawn faculty and students from the Colleges of Engineering, Liberal Arts, Computing, and Architecture at Georgia Tech to organize an exhibition and a conversation around the theme, “Vision: I Imagine, I See, I Make.” This two-week-long salon will demonstrate how student and faculty creativity at Georgia Tech challenges the divide between engineering, science, and the arts. It will be an experimental platform for advancing trans-disciplinary education at Tech; and connecting to like minds in Atlanta, thus redefining the public context of our creative efforts. Exhibits range from attempts to understand the multiple facets of traffic modeling and management, to exploring the connection between visualization and music; from architectural projects, to virtual game worlds; and from discussions of how innovation is expressed in patents, to discussions of the role of computational models in the making of new forms of ornament.

• Sound floor (recycling sleepers from Beltline railway tracks).

JOURNALISM AT PLAY Cartoonist (Ian Bogost and Simon Ferrari, Literature, Communication, and Culture) is a single player videogame engine with "skins" (contextual image layers) and mechanics (game structures and allowed actions) that morph or change as the player proceeds through his or her play session. Drawing from local and national news, Cartoonist connects real-world events, actions, and actors through the rules and structures of traditional arcade games.

TOWER OF BABEL - CASTLE IN THE SKY (Daniel Baerlacken’s studio, Architecture). A tower made up of empty bottles. An installation built on a narrative of sustainability that calls for increased environmental awareness as well as shifting behavioral paradigms. Using recyclable products for construction, clothing hangers, and plastic beverage bottles, the project serves to communicate the failures of different levels of consumption. Like the Babel myth, the current trends of disposable consumerism represent the great tragedy and failure of modern-day consumption. Project team includes Abaan Ali, Zachary Brown, Colleen Creighton, Christina Deriso, David Duncan, Bradley King, Chris Martin, Caleb Meister, Eric Morris, Amyn Mukadam-Soldier, and Brittany Utting.

GO1N-23/20, OR, 15 QUESTIONS TO ASK 30 PATENTS (Thomas Lodato) explores the data and meta-data associated patents from x-ray backscatter imaging (international category id: G01N-23/20) to present a view of patents participating within, rather than simply reflecting, socio-techinical systems.

VISUALIZING THE INVISIBLE This project by Gernot Riether's, Jude Le Blanc's, and Tim Harrison's studios in the School of Architecture explores the use of digital tools in a design process. The project looks at procedurally generated concepts in an inhabitable "landscape" and wall-mounted drawings showing the progressive design process.  

TANGLE JUNGLE  In the carpets of William Morris, ornament has acquired the capacity to interlace, to weave and to form knots, close to the Celtic knotwork of the first millennium. Tangle Jungle uses Morrisian algorithms of interlacing, tendriling, and bifurcating to create a three-dimensional system of vines that goes beyond a world of mere drapery, to become architectural structure itself. Project team includes Lars Spuybroek and Sabri Gokmen and students Yinzi Tan, Katherine Elizabeth Cooper Dunatov, Zachary Damon Brown, Katherine Giraldo, Amyn Mukadam-Soldier, Abaan Muhammad Ali, Aaron Robert Coffman, and Michael Douglas Bennett.

A SALON WITHIN THE SALON  Fishbowl discussion of Silent Barrage, a video of a closed loop conversation with a robot instructed and controlledby networks of neurons. Silent Barrage was researched and developed at SymbioticA, The Centre of Excellence in Biological Arts at The School of Anatomy & Human Biology, University of Western Australia, and Dr. Steve Potter's lab within the Lab for Neuroengineering at Georgia Tech.

Led by Aaron Bobick, the panel will explore the Look of the Humanistic Technological University of the Future with Georgia Tech Faculty Participation.

3-D CARPETS - (Lars Spuybroek, Sabri Gokmen and students). Carpet designs are analyzed to produce generative scripts that are used to transform 2-D patterns into 3-D. 3-D designs are built in acrylic pieces and assembled as an exhibit. Is likely to be suspended in space.

The Georgia Tech Digital Building Lab was formed to respond to the current and future challenges within the design and construction industry: new Information Technologies, new methods of project delivery, new approaches to eliminate waste and make construction “lean," and new energy and sustainability challenges. The purpose of the symposium is to advance these areas and to grow the intersection between industry issues and university initiatives. In multiple segments, the symposium will address such issues as: 

• Interoperability and developing smooth workflows and data movement between tasks and collaborators
• Building model correctness and checking of models
• Improving energy feedback for design
• Construction safety
• Building skin mock-ups
• Construction materials and products
• A review and status of current projects funded through the DBL.

These will consist of mixtures of presentations and discussions with industry participants, regarding how university research groups can best address issues in architecture and construction.

About the Digital Building Lab

The DBL is an umbrella organization, housed in the College of Architecture at Georgia Tech, bringing together the resources of multiple departments and colleges to address new or emerging problems/opportunities in architecture, construction and fabrication. Its purpose is to:

• Undertake strategic industry studies – in technology development and assessment, collaboration, interoperability, productivity – for their own results, or as initial studies leading to longer term research
• Provide testbeds for development and prototyping new technologies in fabrication and production
• Promote interdisciplinary education, both within GA Tech and with other universities
• Promote collaborative research between university units and some industries.

The food industry is one of the largest employers by sector in the U.S. Food contamination can occur anywhere along the food production process, from the "farm to fork." The workshop presents an opportunity for the GTRI/Georgia Tech community to meet and interact with some of the leading researchers working in the area of food safety.

In addition to keynotes and panel discussions, the workshop will include invited talks in the areas of food safety practices, sampling and preconcentration methodologies, and sensing developments.

Goals for the workshop include:

• Stimulate innovate approaches for improving food safety through advanced sensing and novel sampling methods.
• Highlight cutting-edge research in micro- and nanotechnologies being applied to food safety sensing.
• Explore technological research strategies, opportunities, approaches and solutions.
• Provide a forum for scientists and engineers to discuss synergies in current research.
• Enable the cross-pollination of ideas and stimulate the development of new collborative, multidisplinary teams.
• Facilitate a dialog between industry, regulatory agencies, and the scientific, community.
• Advance the field of micro- and nanotechnology based sensing for improved food safety.

This symposium will bring together an international group of scientists, technologists, engineers, mission designers, policy makers and students with an interest in learning from the significant contributions of the shuttle era and in exchanging ideas to promote future collaboration and continued leadership in space science and engineering. The symposium scope includes topics of the Shuttle Era-its history, technical and scientific achievements, the orbiter, propulsion, structures and thermal protection, system and mission flight operations, ground operations, current and future vehicle concepts and designs, astronaut safety provisions and two panel discussions focusing on “lessons learned” and international collaboration.

As part of the White House’s Startup America initiative, senior Obama Administration officials will visit Atlanta to meet with entrepreneurs and hear directly from them on suggestions for reducing barriers and improving regulations to build a more supportive environment for entrepreneurship and innovation.

Officials attending the event include Deputy Administrator of the US Small Business Administration Marie Johns, Associate Administrator of Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs Michael Fitzpatrick, Deputy Director of the US Patent and Trademark Office Teresa Rae, Senior Economist at the Council of Economic Advisors Ronnie Chatterji.

Georgia Tech President G.P. "Bud" Peterson will also be making remarks. 

The Startup America initiative will support startups and entrepreneurs, giving them the tools and resources to grow America’s economy and win the future. Using the input from the roundtables and broader public participation, the Administration will produce a report highlighting ideas to streamline and simplify unnecessary barriers to America’s entrepreneurs and innovators.

Abstract:  Thescience of metallurgy has a history almost as long as human civilizationitself. A great variety of metals and metallic alloys at different stages havebecome the very cornerstone on which our society is based, since the inceptionof this ancient yet vibrant discipline.

        However,computational metallurgical mechanics remains elusive largely owing to thedisconnect between the modern computational approaches and the complexity ofmost metallurgical topics. Just tapping into one of the most discussedmetallurgical phenomena, decarburization, the work presented in this thesissummarizes the research conducted on quantifying the progression ofdecarburization and its impact on the mechanical properties of steel samples.

        Thetopics researched in this work serve, but are not limited to, the production ofhollow metal proppants used for underground oil and natural gas reserveextraction, including calculating the progression and the impact ofdecarburization that occurs during the heat processing of steel in atime-dependent fashion and modeling the deformation behavior of a maragingsteel hollow sphere. Then the decarburization model is modified to relate theoverall mechanical properties of the impact-resistantMg/Al/maraging-steel-hollow-sphere composite material to its microstructure.

        Asmuch as 95% by weight of all metal produced worldwide is steel. In order toobtain higher strength and eliminate residual stress, steel is heated to hightemperatures to allow for homogenization followed by heat treating at a varietyof temperatures and times to enhance the overall mechanical properties.However, decarburization, commonly known as the loss of carbon to theenvironment due to  its reaction with the atmosphere, will occur andresult in considerable strength loss. To avoid potential dangers such asreduced static and fatigue properties, the mechanical property variations mustbe determined with respect to the heat treatment temperature and time. Thiswork also outlines the procedures used to quantify the effects of processingtemperature on the microstructure. These effects include average particle size,particle volume fraction, void and porosity. Once completed, the deformationbehavior of the maraging steel hollow spheres is investigated in the subsequentwork to visualize the stress environment in which the proppants would function.To further the effort, the hollow maraging steel spheres are cast into Mg/Alalloy matrix and the properties of the resulted impact-resistant compositematerial are simulated loosely based on the microstructure model establishedfor the decarburization process.

        Modelingmakes it economically practical to assess the targeted materials' overallproperties, behaviors and the mechanical responses in conjunction with stressenvironment, material dimensions (sphere size, sphere wall thickness, etc.)among other variables, before a structure is built. Additionally, more advancedmodeling can enable the quantitative descriptions of more complex metallurgicalphenomena such as the effects of impurity elements, geometric changes of thesecond-phase particles, and deformation under complex loading situations.

Rationale: The basic and applied materials research needed for the advancement of new materials-based technologies with significant impact requires access to, and development of, a range of state-of-the-art materials characterization tools. While a variety of equipment and facilities for materials analyses exist at Georgia Tech, the lack of a coordinated strategy for the acquisition, maintenance, support, management, training, use, and development of these tools/facilities has led to the perception of deficiencies in the quality and accessibility of advanced materials characterization across campus. A major initiative is proposed to develop a sustainable infrastructure that will propel Georgia Tech into a national and global leadership position in state-of-the-art materials characterization.
Purpose: The purpose of this workshop is to engage a broad cross-section of the Georgia Tech community involved in materials research to address critical issues associated with materials characterization. Among the key issues to be discussed in this Workshop are:
•    Identification of cutting-edge materials characterization tools that are likely to have the most significant, universal, and long-lasting impact on materials research at Georgia Tech
• Development of a sustainable financial model that provides necessary support for the acquisition, maintenance, and development of state-of-the-art characterization tools, while at the same time enabling affordable access to such equipment by a broad cross-section of the Georgia Tech materials community
• Construction and/or retrofitting of a centralized building or buildings specifically designed for optimal use of advanced materials characterization equipment, and for the optimal location of associated technical personnel
• Establishment of a management infrastructure that provides for effective and transparent operation of state-of-the-art materials characterization equipment and facilities

The IFC Center is an industry/academic joint initiative to identify and resolve critical integration issues across the end-to-end food chain. Building on the foundation of the last two years, the theme for the 2011 Georgia Logistics Summit will be "Thriving in a Changing Ecosystem". In short, this year will be all about exploring logistics business opportunity through the lens of six markets. These include: Air Freight, Agribusiness, Energy, Life-sciences, Manufacturing and Ocean Freight.

At the end of the day, each of these markets must get their products to an end customer, or in other words - logistics. To do this, they share a common and fundamental dependence on the efficient, cost effective, reliable, and secure movement of goods - inbound and outbound. However, each market also presents a unique set of requirements, technology, equipment, conditions, and mandates In addition to multiple keynotes, we are proud to also introduce six new Opportunity Sessions that will allow participants to gain a better understanding of these factors, one market at a time.

Each session will focus on a single market and attendees will hear from industry executives who will share their perspectives on what is desired from logistics providers, current gaps in service offerings, and specific industry trends that will impact logistics service delivery. More than just informational, attendees will walk away from these Opportunity Sessions with ideas that can help them thrive, compete, and grow. This might include getting into new markets or competing within existing markets in unique new ways.

Abstract:
In most areas of engineering and computer science, women comprise less than twenty percent of the population. Unlike other career areas, participation by women has been flat or declining over the past decade. This talk discusses the reasons for the low participation by women, its impact on disciplines where women are under-represented, and what can be done focusing particularly on what are our collective and individual responsibilities to address the factors that result in such low participation.

About the speaker:
Maria Klawe is President of Harvey Mudd College. A renowned computer scientist and scholar, she is the first woman to lead HMC since its founding in 1955. Before taking on her current position, Dr. Klawe served as Dean of Engineering and Professor of Computer Science at Princeton University. Dr. Klawe has made significant research contributions in several areas of mathematics and computer science including functional analysis, discrete mathematics, theoretical computer science, human-computer interaction, gender issues in information technology, and interactive multimedia for mathematics education. Her current research focuses on the development and use of multi-modal applications to assist people with aphasia and other cognitive impairments. She received her PhD (1977) and B.Sc. (1973) in Mathematics from the University of Alberta.

Information Technology & Project Delivery – What owners need to know

This workshop will focus on providing guidance to owners on how to utilize to best affect new technologies now available, and how to integrate these with modified project delivery approaches. This event is organized by the Digital Building Laboratory (DBL) at Georgia Tech. The DBL, directed by Chuck Eastman, has been at the forefront of developing information modeling and BIM technologies.

Bringing together owners, contractors, designers, practitioners, and software developers, this workshop will address the interface between the new technologies and the methods used to integrate the delivery of projects. This will be of particular interest to owners and others active in the fields of healthcare, hospitality, education and development. The event will examine problems now being encountered and address potential solutions in a workshop environment, drawing on actual project case studies for input. Sessions will range from using virtual models to improve early project definition to linking BIM to facilitymanagement.

This year's workshop will once again be held at the beautiful Sea Pines Resort on Hilton Head Island. The goals of the workshop are to bring together academic & corporate scientists and their students working at the cutting edge of regenerative medicine technologies and provide an intimate forum for sharing the latest insights and discoveries in this rapidly progressing field.
Active researchers, graduate, postdoctoral student researchers, and those interested in keeping pace with the latest developments in regenerative medicine are encouraged to participate. This workshop sells out each year and provides a unique “Gordon Conference-style” environment and is structured to allow ample opportunity for participants to interact with each other, both within the formal sessions and informally at other times.

This event is intended for researchers from Georgia universities and the CDC.  There is no charge to attend, but advance registration and security clearance are required.  Registration information must be received by April 6, 2011.

The scientific focus of this symposium is R&D in vaccines, immune therapies, diagnostics and delivery systems for the treatment and prevention of infectious and non-infectious diseases/conditions.  This year’s hot topics include Innate Immunity; Inflammation and Infection; and Systems Vaccinology.  

There is a Call for Papers for the upcoming ICTD 2012 Conference ~ submission deadline is 22 July 2011, 11:59pm UTC. The Fifth IEEE/ACM International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies and Development will be held 12-16 March 2012.

The 2011 Suddath Symposium on the Ribosome at Georgia Tech brings together researchers who are exploring various aspects of ribosome structure and function. The ribosome is a molecular machine that is responsible for protein synthesis in all living cells. This indispensable component of life, which contains both RNA and proteins, can be viewed as a molecular fossil. That is, the comparison of ribosomal RNA and proteins from distantly related organisms suggests that the origins and evolution of protein synthesis remain imprinted in present day ribosomes, providing a “rewindable” molecular recording of early evolution that appears to go all the way back to the origin of life. Because the ribosome is central to the biochemistry of all life, it is a major target for drug development. For example, the mode of action of many antibiotics is to inhibit translation or cause bacterial ribosome to make mistakes during protein synthesis. Due to differences between bacterial and eukaryotic ribosomes, the result of billions of years of divergent evolution, drugs can be highly effective against bacterial ribosomes without causing appreciable side effects in human cells. Thus, studies of ribosome structure, function and evolution have scientific implications ranging from understanding the origin and early evolution of life to the development of novel pharmaceuticals.

Georgia Tech graduate Jeff Robinson is an award-winningbusiness school professor, international speaker and entrepreneur. Since 2008he has been a leading faculty member at Rutgers Business School, where he is an assistant professor ofmanagement and entrepreneurship and the founding assistant director of TheCenter for Urban Entrepreneurship & Economic Development. The Center is aunique interdisciplinary venue for innovativethinking and research on entrepreneurial activity and economicdevelopment in urbanenvironments. 

Robinson’s research examines how business practices andentrepreneurship can shape societal issues, with particular emphasis on communityand economic development issues for urban metropolitan areas in the UnitedStates and abroad. He is the author of books and articles on such topics associal entrepreneurship, African American women in entrepreneurship, and Blackunemployment. In 2007, he received the Aspen Institute’s Social Impact FacultyPioneer Award for his research, service and teaching activities at the intersectionof business and society.

Robinson is a sought-after speaker, author and mediacommentator, having appeared on Dateline NBC and NBC Nightly News, PBS, NJNNews, NJBIZ, and in The Star-Ledgerand The New York Times. The keynotespeaker at international events and conferences in Shanghai, Lagos and London,he has been invited to present his work on six continents.

Robinson is co-founder and a member of the Advisory Board ofBCT Partners, which provides management, technology and policy consulting tonon-profits, foundations, corporations and government entities as they plan andimplement change strategies to improve organizational effectiveness. In 2008 heand his wife, Valerie Mason-Robinson, opened Eden Organix, a day spa andretailer of organic skin and beauty products in Highland Park, New Jersey, thathas been recognized by New JerseyMagazine as one of the 10 best spas in the state.

The mathematical framework for his models is asymptotic queueing theory, wherelimits are taken as the number of servers increases indefinitely, in ways thatmaintain a sought-after (often delicate) balance between staffing level andoffered-load. A specific such balance reveals an operational regime thatachieves, under already moderate scale, remarkably high levels of both servicequality and efficiency.

Dr. Mandelbaum's teaching has beenacknowledged by the Technion Mani Award for Excellence in Teaching, 1999; theTechnion Excellence in Teaching Award, 2000 (for the course, ServiceEngineering); and the inaugural Meir Rosenblatt Prize for teaching,2004.  His research contributions have been acknowledged by the ORSISYosef Levy prize, 2001; the Mitchner Prize for Quality Sciences and QualityManagement, 2003; and the inaugural Markov Lecture of the Applied Probability Society , INFORM, 2005.

The rest of the AMSA pre-health conference is closed to those who have already registered, but will include workshops throughout the day centered around topics such as preparation for the MCAT and interviews, exploring healthcare professions and admissions advice. The event has 200 Tech students registered.

Georgia Congressman Phil Gingrey, M.D., will deliver a keynote about how healthcare reform may affect pre-med and pre-health students. At least 50 graduate programs will be represented and available to students during a networking lunch.

Georgia Tech serves as the host for this premier National Science Foundation (NSF) conference, sponsored by the Division of Civil, Mechanical and Manufacturing Innovation (CMMI), focusing on research and education across the Division's programs. CMMI’s mission is to fund fundamental research and education in support of NSF’s strategic goals, which are directed toward advances in the civil, mechanical, industrial and manufacturing engineering disciplines. Additionally, CMMI focuses on the reduction of risks and damage resulting from earthquakes and other natural and technological hazards.

Conference activities will include more than 1,000 poster presentations; technical tours of local companies and Georgia Tech; and plenary and breakout sessions on funding opportunities and proposal writing, research needs, opportunities, and best practices. The conference also will provide an excellent opportunity for networking between NSF grantees, students, industry, and government, hopefully motivating them to become innovators in these areas in their future careers, and make a positive impact on society.

Fabrication of 3D Tissue Chips Using a Layer-by-Layer Technique

A Layer-by-Layer (LbL) assembly is an appropriate method to fabricate nanometer-sized films on a substrate through alternate immersion into interactive polymer solutions. The LbL hierarchic construction of films can be achieved by introducing heterogeneous polymers, resulting in novel polymer blend systems. We focused on the fabrication of stereocomplex LbL films by van der Waals interactions and the construction of biocompatible hollow capsules for drug delivery system by LbL assembly. The multilayered films with tuneable physic-chemical properties prepared by LbL assembly have great potential for varied applications.

The creation of artificial three-dimensional (3D) tissues possessing a similar structure and functions as natural tissue is a key challenge for implantable tissues in tissue engineering, and for model tissues in pharmaceutical assay. Recently, we demonstrated a simple 3D-cell manipulation technique for the construction of hierarchically layered structures, which possess a precisely controlled layer number and type of cells, by the direct fabrication of a fibronectin (FN)-gelatin (G) nanofilm like an ECM on the surface of each cell layer. Since the FN-G nanofilms with over 6 nm thick acted as a scaffold for the cell adhesion of the second layer, we successfully developed hierarchical cellular multilayers composed of various type of cells, such as human primary fibroblasts, mouse C2C12 myoblasts, rat primary cardiac myocytes, and human primary smooth muscle cells, even 10 layers In addition, blood vessel model tissues with varied layer numbers composed of human smooth muscle cell (UASMC) and human endothelial cell (HUVEC) were also fabricated by this technique. These hierarchical structures would be useful as a 3D-layered model tissue for tissue engineering and pharmaceutical assay.
