About The Course
This one day course will provide an understanding of the threat to information resources, how to assess current risk levels, and the process to manage risk. You will learn the key elements of how to build and implement an effective information protection program.

Who Should Attend
Individuals at all levels who are charged with protecting digital data resources and want to learn more about their responsibilities and options.

Prerequisites
A basic knowledge of business information systems (operating systems, networks, and databases) will be helpful to gain the maximum benefit from this program but is not mandatory.

Course Objectives
This course is an effective stand-alone overview for those who seek a broad perspective of information security. It also will provide a solid foundation for those who want to pursue further study on the details of building and implementing an information security environment or secure professional certification in this discipline. You will learn:

Fundamentals of information contingency planning including:

* Incident response and business continuity plans.

U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu announced the selected projects on Monday. The projects announced are based in 18 states with 36 percent of projects led by universities, 33 percent by small businesses, 24 percent by large businesses, five percent by national labs and two percent by non-profits. These awards complete ARPA-E’s grants under its Recovery Act funding. In three rounds of awards since last year, the agency has selected a total of 117 projects for $349 million in funding, supporting research that can deliver breakthrough changes in how the U.S. generates, stores and utilizes energy.

The Georgia Tech projects, partners and respective funding are as follows:

* Georgia Tech Research Corporation, partnered with Stone Mountain Technologies, Inc. and ARS Solutions, LLC will focus on their project, "Vapor Absorption/Adsorption: Modular Thermal Hub for Building Cooling, Heating and Water Heating." This project will develop a hub for cooling and heating systems in buildings using microscale passages. It uses fluids with zero Global Warming Potential (GWP) and can achieve from hundreds to tens of thousands of Watts in cooling capacity and a 51 percent primary energy use reduction. The project will be based in Atlanta and will receive $2,399,842 in funding. School of Mechanical Engineering Prof. Srinivas Garimella will be the principal investigator.
* Massachusetts Institute of Technology will partner with Dartmouth, Georgia Tech, the University of Pennsylvania and OnChip Power on a project titled "Switches/Magnetics – Lighting: Advanced Technologies for Integrated Power Electronics." This project radically improves the size, integration, and performance of power electronics for high‐efficiency solid‐state lighting (SSL), with a focus on circuits for interfacing with grid‐scale voltages (>100 V) at power levels of 10 – 100W. Specifically, it will develop Gallium Nitride on Silicon (GaN‐on‐Si) high‐voltage transistors, nano‐structured magnetic components, and advanced circuit designs. The project will be based in Cambirdge, Mass. and is funded at $4,414,009. Georgia Tech's proposed amount is $600,000. School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Prof. Mark Allen will be the principal investigator.
* Georgia Tech Research Corporation, partnered with National Semiconductor, will focus efforts on the project "Magnetics – Consumer Electronics: Highly Laminated, High Saturation Flux Density Magnetic Cores for On‐Chip Inductors in Power Converter Applications." The goal of this project is to greatly reduce the size and cost, and increase the efficiency of, laptop power supplies and other chargers used to power consumer electronics. It will do so through the development of new magnetic materials that support high‐currents despite their small size. New manufacturing technologies are employed to create microscale laminates, forming them into inductors and transformers, and integrating them with specialized electronic components to make very small‐scale power converters. The project will be based in Atlanta and funded in the amount of $999,017. Allen will also serve as principal investigator on this project.
* Georgia Tech Research Corporation's third project will be "Circuit Topology/Switches –Transmission: Dynamic Control of Grid Assets Using Direct AC Converter Cells." Technology developed in this project will enable dramatic cost reductions in smart grid implementation and allow increased penetration of renewable energy resources by reducing transmission and distribution upgrade costs by up to 80 percent. The project will involve several key developments: a new converter layout that achieves an AC/AC function using minimal number of switches, and the elimination of large capacitors in the system. The project will be based in Atlanta and will be funded in the amount of $981,619. ECE Prof. Deepakraj Divan will serve as principal investigator. ECE Associate Prof. Carlos Grijalva will serve as co-principal investigator.

ARPA-E received 529 initial concept papers and encouraged approximately 164 applicants to submit full applications. Multiple review panels composed of leading U.S. science and technology experts reviewed each proposal and made recommendations based on scientific and technical merit and the potential to dramatically advance national energy and economic goals. Potential additional applications for funding innovative research projects are pending further review.

Atlanta Region Bike and Pedestrian Meeting
Also on Tuesday, May 22, ARC will host a Community Open House Workshop to present a summary and draft of the updated Atlanta Region Bicycle Transportation and Pedestrian Walkways Plan. This workshop will be a follow-up to a series of five workshops held around the region in October 2006, at which participants were able to offer their opinion on what constitutes an acceptable level of accommodation for bicyclists and pedestrians on the Atlanta region's major roadways. The Bicycle/Pedestrian Plan evaluates existing conditions, identifies strategies for improving biking and walking along the region's roadways, and contains policy recommendations for ARC and local governments. Those in attendance at the May 22 workshop will learn how public input has been incorporated into the Plan so far, get a preview of the policy recommendations to be incorporated in the Plan update, and be invited to comment.

The Healthy Places Research Group (HPRG) is a collaborative effort involving Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health, Georgia Tech's College of Architecture, and the Center for Quality Growth and Regional Development. It also involves professionals from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), researchers, students, and others interested in exploring the co-relationship between the built environment and the health of communities.

The HPRG meets once a month to discuss issues and exchange information pertaining to health policy and impacts. Participation is open to anyone interested in exploring the characteristics and advancement of healthy places.

This month's speaker will be Karen Glanz, Ph.D., M.P.H, of Emory University. She will be talking about measures to evaluate the nutrition environment in communities.

The conference typically draws over 400 attendees and, this year, will feature over 40 national and local expert panelists, including keynote speakers Terry Tamminen and Mike Tidwell. Tamminen, as former chief policy advisor to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, worked to create California's landmark carbon reduction and trading program. Tidwell, a native Georgian, is founder and director of the Chesapeake Climate Action Network and works to raise awareness about the impacts and solutions associated with global warming.

With a fast approaching deadline, the first of the series is the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA): Young Faculty Award (YFA). This program aims to identify and engage rising stars in academia and expose them to Department of Defense (DOD) needs. In particular, the YFA will provide high-impact funding to elite junior faculty early in their careers to help develop their research ideas in the context of DOD issues. The long term goal of the program is to develop the next generation of academic scientists, engineers, biologists and mathematicians in key disciplines of interest to DARPA who will focus a significant portion of their career on DOD and national security issues.

Teachers will build a 2D animation and a game in Scratch and 3D movies (animations) in Alice. Teachers will use drag-and-drop programming. Both Scratch and Alice are free software. Scratch is available from http://scratch.mit.edu and Alice from http://www.alice.org. The workshop will explain how to cover introductory computing concepts such as: class, object, method, parameter, function, variable, iteration (looping), conditional execution, and event-driven execution. Each teacher will receive materials including slides, exercises, lesson plans, and grading rubrics. This material can be used in Technology, Computing in the Modern World, Beginning Programming, or AP CS A.

This workshop is free for Georgia teachers, and if you live > 30 miles from Georgia Tech we will pay for your hotel for Friday night (2 teachers per room), Friday night dinner, and Sat breakfast. If you would prefer a private room you can pay 1/2 the hotel cost. We will cover parking for Georgia teachers who stay at the hotel and reimburse parking for Georgia teachers who do not stay at the hotel. We will pay for lunch for all teachers. Dr. Crowley is well known for his founding of the UGA College of Environment and Design, which brings together the disciplines of landscape architecture, historic preservation, and ecology. He originally joined the University of Georgia's Landscape Architecture program in 1975 and served a four year term as an assistant professor. After working in Oklahoma in the fields of planning and real estate, he returned to UGA in 1996, where he served as the Dean of the College of Environmental Design from 1996 to 2006 and where he is currently a Professor in the School of Environmental Design.

World Town Planning Day (WTPD) was created in 1949 by Professor Carlos Maria della Paolera of the University of Buenos Aires as a way to advance public and professional interest in planning. It is now celebrated in over 30 countries and successfully draws attention to planning issues on local, regional, and global scales. The celebration of WTPD follows the American Planning Association's National Community Planning Month, which occurs throughout October.

This event is co-sponsored by the Georgia Planning Association and is open to the public. Light hors d'oeurves and refreshments will be served following Dr. Crowley's presentation.

There are about 653 ECE students enrolled in 11 different lab classes this semester. There are an additional 290 students from other engineering schools on campus that are enrolled in ECE3741, for a total of 943 students. This brown bag will be an overview of some of the lab classes being taught in ECE. It will include a demonstration of some lab equipment and a display of various senior design projects. We will also highlight a new ECE lab course that will be taught for the first time this semester, ECE3071, Modern Electric Energy Systems.

Based on the SCALE-UP (Student-Centered Activities for Large EnrollmentUndergraduate Programs) model developed at North Carolina State byRobert Beichner, the CULC Prototype Classroom is being used be used across multiple disciplines—including engineering, biology,modern languages and English—as well as by the Center for theEnhancement of Teaching and Learning.

The room contains several Innovative features, such as no "teaching wall," writing surfaces on all four walls, and three plasma screens mounted on two of the walls. Furniture arranges the  students in threegroups of nine, virtually linking each group to one of the screens.

The classroom is located in room G-8 of ESM.

Capital Planning and Space Management, CETL, the Office of Information Technology and Facilities sponsor the prototype classroom.

This workshop is designed to acquaint you with the fundamental aspects of this technique as well as some examples of current applications. A demonstration experiment will also be performed.

About The Course
