Intel\u2019s commitment affirms liberal arts-based research as a leading edge for third-wave computing.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThis is really quite daring,\u201d said \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.iac.gatech.edu\/faculty-and-staff\/faculty\/bio\/disalvo\u0022\u003ECarl DiSalvo\u003C\/a\u003E, associate professor in the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.iac.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EIvan Allen College of Liberal Arts School of Literature, Communication, and Culture\u003C\/a\u003E, which houses one of the nation\u2019s top graduate programs in digital media.\u0026nbsp; \u201cThe research convention has been to create a technology and then find a use for it. ISTC-Social shifts that to the innovation occurring in the humanities and social sciences. We begin with cultural and societal analysis, imagine social contexts or societal goals, and those become the driver for creating technology.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIntel CTO Justin Rattner announced the ISTC-Social this morning at the annual Research at Intel event.\u0026nbsp; This is the third ISTC at Georgia Tech; faculty in the College of Computing are part of ITSCs for Embedded and Pervasive Computing. ISTC-Social is the first \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.intel.com\/content\/www\/us\/en\/research\/intel-labs-istc.html\u0022\u003EIntel-academic collaboration\u003C\/a\u003E to span technology, social sciences and humanities. The premise is that technology, culture, politics and computing are inextricably intertwined and are, therefore, essential to study in amalgam.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThis type of innovation at the crossroads of humanities, social sciences and technology has been a hallmark of liberal arts at Georgia Tech,\u201d said\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.iac.gatech.edu\/faculty-and-staff\/faculty\/bio\/bogost\u0022\u003E Ian Bogost\u003C\/a\u003E, director of the School of Literature, Communication, and Culture \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/lcc.gatech.edu\/graduate\/dmms\/index.php\u0022\u003EGraduate Program in Digital Media\u003C\/a\u003E. \u201cITSC-Social will further enable our research on completely novel forms of social computing.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EDiSalvo, Bogost and Assistant Professor \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.iac.gatech.edu\/faculty-and-staff\/faculty\/bio\/ledantec\u0022\u003EChristopher Le Dantec\u003C\/a\u003E will partner with researchers at Intel and the ISTC-Social hub at the University of California, Irvine, as well as with faculty in centers at Cornell, Indiana and New York Universities. The work will converge across informatics, anthropology, communication, digital humanities, cultural studies, science and technology studies, media studies, philosophy, computer science and design.
