In this first-of-its-kindcollaboration among Sonic Generator, contemporary dance troupe gloATL andAtlanta Symphony Orchestra Maestro Robert Spano, the audience will be immersedinto a panoramic, grass-covered landscape with a 360-degree experience ofmusic, dance and theatrical design. Maá is anoriginal interpretation of the renowned Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho’s musiccomposition of the same name, which translates to “earth.” Saariaho’s workblends the use of electronics and traditional instruments and is marked by itsemphasis on timbre; Maá is widelyconsidered to be among her most important compositions.

“We are excited to share thisexhilarating work with Atlanta audiences,” said Jason Freeman, assistant professorin the Georgia Tech School of Music and executive director of Sonic Generator.“Georgia Tech is an international leader in arts and technology research, andthis production demonstrates our commitment to bringing the unique expertise ofour faculty and students to the concert stage to presentcompelling performances in collaboration with the most talented artists in thecity.”

Now in its sixth year, Sonic Generator uses technology to transform the ways in which wecompose, perform and listen to music. The group is sponsored by Georgia Tech’sGVU Center, College of Architecture, and School of Music, bringing the bestprofessional classical musicians from around Atlanta to campus to collaboratewith students and faculty and incorporate new research into liveperformance. 

gloATL Dancemaker Lauri Stallingswill choreograph and stage the work for seven principal dancers, the musiciansand Maestro Spano, who will conduct the entire Maáenvironment. A largephysical chorus of dancers from gloLAB and Kennesaw State University’sDepartment of Dance will complete the cast.

Stallings also assembled the creativeteam, including Bruce Harlan, Lighting Designer; Adam Larsen, Multi-MediaArtist; Anne Patterson, Scenic Designer; Tian Justman, Costume Designer; andRichard Carvlin, Production Manager.

In the program, works by Louis Andriessen and Michael Gordon are paired with visuals by seminal filmmakers Bill Morrison and Hal Hartley, while a work by Nardelli features live audio and visual processing of a solo flutist.
