Studies that compare mixed method courses to face-to-face or online courses have conflicting results: some find improved learning outcomes and some find no significant differences. This talk argues that these conflicting results are due to inconsistent or vague definitions of hybrid, blended, flipped, and inverted courses. To address this problem, the Mixed Instructional eXperience (MIX) taxonomy was developed to define these terms based on two pedagogically relevant dimensions: how instruction is delivered and what type of instruction is delivered. Using the MIX taxonomy to re-classify courses, analysis of this literature revealed four themes in the results that illuminate how different teaching methods affect learning outcomes. The findings of this analysis both validate the taxonomy as a tool to categorize courses and further knowledge in this field.

  <status>1</status>  <created>1411380946</created>  <gmt_created>2014-09-22 10:15:46</gmt_created>  <changed>1475892568</changed>  <gmt_changed>2016-10-08 02:09:28</gmt_changed>  <promote>0</promote>  <sticky>0</sticky>  <teaser>Mixing Face-to-Face and Online Learning:Teaching Methods that Affect Learning</teaser>  <type>event</type>  <sentence>Mixing Face-to-Face and Online Learning:Teaching Methods that Affect Learning</sentence>

Mixing Face-to-Face and Online Learning:Teaching Methods that Affect Learning
Brown Bag

Monday, September 29, 2014
C21U Innovation Lab, Klaus 1207
12-1p.m.

  <start>2014-09-29T13:00:00-04:00</start>  <end>2014-09-29T14:00:00-04:00</end>  <end_last>2014-09-29T14:00:00-04:00</end_last>  <gmt_start>2014-09-29 17:00:00</gmt_start>  <gmt_end>2014-09-29 18:00:00</gmt_end>  <gmt_end_last>2014-09-29 18:00:00</gmt_end_last>  <times>
      <value>2014-09-29T13:00:00-04:00</value>      <value2>2014-09-29T14:00:00-04:00</value2>      <rrule>  </rrule>      <timezone>America/New_York</timezone>      <timezone_db>America/New_York</timezone_db>      <date_type>datetime</date_type>
  </times>  <gmt_times>
      <value>2014-09-29 01:00:00</value>      <value2>2014-09-29 02:00:00</value2>      <rrule>  </rrule>      <timezone>America/New_York</timezone>      <timezone_db>America/New_York</timezone_db>      <date_type>datetime</date_type>
  </gmt_times>  <phone></phone>
http://www.cc.gatech.edu/about/directions#klaus
  <location_url>
http://www.cc.gatech.edu/about/directions#klaus

  </location_url>

  <contact></contact>  <fee></fee>  <extras>      </extras>  <location></location>  <media>      </media>  <hg_media>      </hg_media>  <boilerplate></boilerplate>  <boilerplate_text></boilerplate_text>  <sidebar>
Mixing Face-to-Face and Online Learning:Teaching Methods that Affect Learning
Brown Bag
Monday, September 29, 2014
C21U Innovation Lab, Klaus 1207
12-1p.m.
</sidebar>  <related>      </related>  <files>      </files>  <groups>          <group id="66244">C21U</group>      </groups>  <categories>
Seminar/Lecture/Colloquium
      </categories>  <event_terms>          <term tid="1795">Seminar/Lecture/Colloquium</term>      </event_terms>  <event_audience>          <term tid="78771">Public</term>      </event_audience>  <keywords>      </keywords>  <userdata>        </userdata></node><node id="312341">
2014 Mentor Walk
  <uid>27947</uid>

The Mentor Walk, now in its fourth year, will be hosted at Georgia State University on September 20, 2014 with close to 900 children from across the Atlanta metropolitan area. Held in conjunction with the Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning (CETL), the lecture series highlights innovative thinkers in higher education who focus on real-life experiences about new ideas that inspire teachers to experiment with innovations.

Abstract
“Disruption” is the theme of the moment in higher education policy. In 2008, StraighterLine was the first provider of ultra-affordable online courses outside of the traditional accreditation structure. This talk will outline why online learning is extremely profitable for most colleges and that “disruption” is a way to start driving these profits from colleges to students in the form of lower prices. Smith will also discuss why the existing organizational model of “college” and higher education regulatory and financing structures are ill-suited to the delivery of online courses. While this threat to college business models is real and dramatic, the market environment in which the threat is occurring is heavily regulated, heavily subsidized, and extremely political. Such forces will slow the adoption of new models.

Bio
Burck Smith is the CEO and founder of StraighterLine. In 2009, ten years before launching StraighterLine, he co-founded SMARTHINKING, the largest online tutoring provider for schools and colleges. Smith has written chapters for two books on education policy for the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) and is working on a third. He is a member of the American Enterprise Institute's Higher Education Working Group. Prior to starting SMARTHINKING, Smith worked as an independent consultant who contracted with for-profit and non-profit educational organizations, including clients such as the Gates Foundation, Microsoft, Computer Curriculum Corporation, the CEO Forum on Education and Technology, the Milken Exchange on Education and Technology, Teaching Matters Inc., Converge Magazine, and others.

As a writer about education and technology issues, Smith has been published in Wired Magazine, Wired News, Converge Magazine, University Business, and the National School Boards Association. In the early 1990s, he wrote articles on a variety of subjects, including creating community telecommunication networks, electronic access to political information, telecommunications deregulation, and the ability of utilities to serve as telecommunications service providers. Smith holds a Master's Degree in Public Policy from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and a BA from Williams College.

About StraighterLine
StraighterLine is a leader in making a quality college education more affordable. StraighterLine’s programs are a great way to tackle the escalating cost of four-year college tuition and avoid a mountain of student debt.

StraighterLine offers two innovative programs. The “Freshman Year for $1,299” program is designed to help college students and their families address rampant rising tuition costs of college education. Students can take up to 10 StraighterLine courses for a single fee of $1,299 and realize savings of more than 90% versus the first-year tuition at many colleges. Students can also enroll in a subscription package of online college courses for $99 a month that allows students who can move the material even faster an opportunity for even greater savings. Both programs includes up to 10 hours of one-on-one instructional support.

Students who successfully complete StraighterLine online college courses receive credit when they enroll with any school in our rapidly expanding network of regionally accredited partner colleges and universities. In addition, the American Council on Education’s College Credit Recommendation Service (ACE CREDIT) has also evaluated and recommended college credit for StraighterLine courses. ACE CREDIT helps students gain access to academic credit at colleges and universities for formal courses and examinations taken in settings outside traditional higher education. StraighterLine also offers a tuition assistance program as a benefit for companies to provide to employees interested in earning their college degree.

  <status>1</status> <created>1358712833</created> <gmt_created>2013-01-20 20:13:53</gmt_created> <changed>1475892130</changed> <gmt_changed>2016-10-08 02:02:10</gmt_changed> <promote>0</promote> <sticky>0</sticky> <teaser>Smith presents "Revenge of Econ 101" as part of the Practitioners’ Leading Edge Lecture Series</teaser> <type>event</type> <sentence>Smith presents "Revenge of Econ 101" as part of the Practitioners’ Leading Edge Lecture Series</sentence>

Burck Smith, CEO and founder of StraighterLine, presents "Revenge of Econ 101" as part of the Practitioners’ Leading Edge Lecture Series. EdX is based in Cambridge, Massachusetts and is governed by MIT and Harvard.

  <status>1</status>  <created>1358358802</created>  <gmt_created>2013-01-16 17:53:22</gmt_created>  <changed>1475892130</changed>  <gmt_changed>2016-10-08 02:02:10</gmt_changed>  <promote>0</promote>  <sticky>0</sticky>  <teaser>Agarwal and Heinlein present “Reinventing Education."</teaser>  <type>event</type>  <sentence>Agarwal and Heinlein present “Reinventing Education."</sentence>

Join Anant Agarwal and Johannes Heinlein of edX for an invited talk on “Reinventing Education.”

  <start>2013-01-28T10:00:00-05:00</start>  <end>2013-01-28T11:00:00-05:00</end>  <end_last>2013-01-28T11:00:00-05:00</end_last>  <gmt_start>2013-01-28 15:00:00</gmt_start>  <gmt_end>2013-01-28 16:00:00</gmt_end>  <gmt_end_last>2013-01-28 16:00:00</gmt_end_last>  <times>
      <value>2013-01-28T10:00:00-05:00</value>      <value2>2013-01-28T11:00:00-05:00</value2>      <rrule>  </rrule>      <timezone>America/New_York</timezone>      <timezone_db>America/New_York</timezone_db>      <date_type>datetime</date_type>
  </times>  <gmt_times>
      <value>2013-01-28 10:00:00</value>      <value2>2013-01-28 11:00:00</value2>      <rrule>  </rrule>      <timezone>America/New_York</timezone>      <timezone_db>America/New_York</timezone_db>      <date_type>datetime</date_type>
  </gmt_times>  <phone>(404) 385-2218</phone>
http://map.gtalumni.org/index.php?id=153
  <location_url>
http://map.gtalumni.org/index.php?id=153

  </location_url>

  <contact>
Josie Giles
C21U Communications Officer
(404) 828-0831
C21U@cc.gatech.edu
</contact>  <fee></fee>  <extras>      </extras>  <location></location>  <media>
184711
      </media>  <hg_media>
          <nid>184711</nid>          <type>image</type>
Anant Agarwal

                      <image_name>anant_agarwal.jpg</image_name>            <image_path>/sites/default/files/images/anant_agarwal_0.jpg</image_path>            <image_full_path>http://www.tlwarc.hg.gatech.edu//sites/default/files/images/anant_agarwal_0.jpg</image_full_path>            <image_740>http://www.tlwarc.hg.gatech.edu/sites/default/files/styles/740xx_scale/public/sites/default/files/images/anant_agarwal_0.jpg?itok=Tuu_Yo6X</image_740>            <image_mime>image/jpeg</image_mime>            <image_alt>Anant Agarwal</image_alt>                              <created>1449179081</created>          <gmt_created>2015-12-03 21:44:41</gmt_created>          <changed>1475894830</changed>          <gmt_changed>2016-10-08 02:47:10</gmt_changed>
      </hg_media>  <boilerplate></boilerplate>  <boilerplate_text></boilerplate_text>  <sidebar></sidebar>  <related>

http://www.c21u.gatech.edu/

C21U

https://www.edx.org/

EdX

      </related>  <files>      </files>  <groups>          <group id="47223">College of Computing</group>          <group id="66244">C21U</group>      </groups>  <categories>
Seminar/Lecture/Colloquium
      </categories>  <event_terms>          <term tid="1795">Seminar/Lecture/Colloquium</term>      </event_terms>  <event_audience>      </event_audience>  <keywords>          <keyword tid="38291">C21U; Center for 21st Century Universities; Richard DeMillo; Higher Education; Coursera; Online Education; Experiment</keyword>          <keyword tid="55551">edX</keyword>          <keyword tid="11807">online education</keyword>      </keywords>  <userdata>        </userdata></node><node id="186291">
Q&A Session with EdX’s President and Director of Strategic Partnerships
  <uid>27255</uid>

Georgia Tech faculty members are invited to attend an informal Q&A session with Anant Agarwal, president of edX, and Johannes Heinlein, director of strategic partnerships and collaborations. Koller's talk includes the pedagogical foundations for this type of teaching and the key technological ideas that support them.

An RSVP is requested for this event: www.c21u.gatech.edu/koller.

Abstract

Last year, Stanford University offered three online courses, which anyone in the world could enroll in and take for free. Students were expected to submit homework assignments, meet deadlines, and were awarded a "Statement of Accomplishment" only if they met a high grading bar. Together, these three courses had enrollments of around 350,000 students, making this one of the largest experiments in online education ever performed. Since the beginning of 2012, we have transitioned this effort into a new venture, Coursera, a social entrepreneurship company whose mission is to make high-quality education accessible to everyone by allowing the best universities to offer courses to everyone around the world, for free. Coursera classes provide a real course experience to students, including video content, interactive exercises with meaningful feedback, using both auto-grading and peer-grading, and a rich peer-to-peer interaction around the course materials. Coursera began operations in early 2012, and as of September 2012, has 16 university partners and over 1.3 million students enrolled in its 124 courses, which span a range of topics including computer science, business, medicine, science, humanities, social sciences, and more.

In this talk, Koller reports on this far-reaching experiment in education known as Coursera, and why she and other Coursera leaders believe this model can provide both an improved classroom experience for on-campus students, via a flipped classroom model, as well as a meaningful learning experience for the millions of students around the world who would otherwise never have access to education of this quality. She'll describe the pedagogical foundations for this type of teaching, and the key technological ideas that support them, including easy-to-create video chunks, a scalable online Q&A forum where students can get their questions answered quickly, sophisticated autograded homeworks, and a carefully designed peer grading pipeline that supports the at-scale grading of more open-ended homeworks. Through such technology, Koller and other Coursera leaders envision millions of people gaining access to the world-leading education that has so far been available only to a tiny few, and using this education to improve their lives, the lives of their families, and the communities in which they live.

Bio

Daphne Koller is the Rajeev Motwani Professor in the Computer Science Department at Stanford University and the co-founder and co-CEO of Coursera, a social entrepreneurship company that works with top universities to make the best education accessible to everyone around the world, for free. In her research life, Koller works in the areas of machine learning and probabilistic modeling with applications to computer vision, systems biology, and personalized medicine. She is the author of more than 200 refereed publications in venues that span a range of disciplines, and has given over a dozen keynote talks at major conferences. Koller is the recipient of many awards, including the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, the ACM/Infosys award, and she is a member of the National Academyof Engineering. She is also an award-winning teacher, who pioneered in her Stanford class many of the ideas that underlie the Coursera user experience. This underscores the
importance of improving technical innovation. While engineers are
 effective at organizing the design variable conflicts that require
 creative designs, they are not very effective at the creative thinking
required to discover these novel designs. Humorous improvisation has been
 used effectively to produce the divergent thinking effective in creating
 novel ideas in non-technical areas. However, improvisation has not proven
 effective in producing novel technical designs. We have developed a new
 method for applying improvisation to improve technical innovation that
 addresses the inherent differences in the shape of technical and
 non-technical idea space. This method requires a convergent and emergent
 step, in addition to the divergent step inherent in humorous improvisation
 to be effective in technical innovation. This method has produced
 innovative technical designs in various workshops, and these results will
 be discussed, as well as how such a method may be integrated into
 engineering research and engineering education.

  <status>1</status>  <created>1344428652</created>  <gmt_created>2012-08-08 12:24:12</gmt_created>  <changed>1475891964</changed>  <gmt_changed>2016-10-08 01:59:24</gmt_changed>  <promote>0</promote>  <sticky>0</sticky>  <teaser>Dr. Ludovice discusses innovative options for using humor in the classroom.</teaser>  <type>event</type>  <sentence>Dr. Ludovice discusses innovative options for using humor in the classroom.</sentence>

Improvisational Design of Engineering Alternatives (IDEA)

Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Associate Professor Pete Ludovice presents the Practitioners’ Leading Edge Lecture Series, which highlights innovative thinkers in higher education. He received his B.S. from the University of Notre Dame in 1983 and Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Texas in 1991. He is interested in using Physics Education Research to improve large calculus-based introductory physics courses. These courses provide exposure to physics fundamentals required by virtually all science and engineering majors in the U.S.; thus, strengthing introductory physics instruction helps advance the scientific and technological capabilites of our nation. In recent years, Physics Education Research has helped strengthen introductory physics; however, these courses still have significant room for improvement in a number of respects. The group's work focuses on two efforts to strengthen introductory courses, specifically: (1) Using cognitive science in a systematic way to develop new instructional materials, and (2) Developing ways to integrate numerical computation and visualization into all aspects (lecture, lab and homework) of the introductory course.
</sidebar>  <related>

http://www.c21u.gatech.edu/

C21U

https://www.physics.gatech.edu/user/michael-schatz

Professor Michael F. This course is taught both online and within a hybrid setting.

During the past three years Georgia College has experimented with using Second Life (SL) as a creative outlet to augment the learning process. In recent semesters GC faculty have used the virtual world to create and model various situations that are closely related to real life situations. Within SL students are able to create their own learning experiences and gain valuable insight from the successes and failures that occur as they progress through the semester. These experiences are based on course objectives and are tried and tested in-world. Students are able to see their plans come to virtual life and they are able to make adjustments, if needed. Later, the students report their findings. In most cases students are able to learn by doing and may take their virtual world experiences forward into the real world.

During the Talk, Smith will discuss and demonstrate how they created a business model in SL, how the students interacted with the software, and their evaluations of the learning model. He will also be able to answer your questions and explain future plans for the software in classroom settings.

  <status>1</status>  <created>1328178351</created>  <gmt_created>2012-02-02 10:25:51</gmt_created>  <changed>1475891868</changed>  <gmt_changed>2016-10-08 01:57:48</gmt_changed>  <promote>0</promote>  <sticky>0</sticky>  <teaser>JOIN US ON THURSDAY, Feb 23 from 1-2PM in KACB 1116 E</teaser>  <type>event</type>  <sentence>JOIN US ON THURSDAY, Feb 23 from 1-2PM in KACB 1116 E</sentence>

  <start>2012-02-23T12:00:00-05:00</start>  <end>2012-02-23T13:00:00-05:00</end>  <end_last>2012-02-23T13:00:00-05:00</end_last>  <gmt_start>2012-02-23 17:00:00</gmt_start>  <gmt_end>2012-02-23 18:00:00</gmt_end>  <gmt_end_last>2012-02-23 18:00:00</gmt_end_last>  <times>
      <value>2012-02-23T12:00:00-05:00</value>      <value2>2012-02-23T13:00:00-05:00</value2>      <rrule>  </rrule>      <timezone>America/New_York</timezone>      <timezone_db>America/New_York</timezone_db>      <date_type>datetime</date_type>
  </times>  <gmt_times>
      <value>2012-02-23 12:00:00</value>      <value2>2012-02-23 01:00:00</value2>      <rrule>  </rrule>      <timezone>America/New_York</timezone>      <timezone_db>America/New_York</timezone_db>      <date_type>datetime</date_type>
  </gmt_times>  <phone></phone>
http://www.c21u.gatech.edu
  <location_url>
http://www.c21u.gatech.edu

  </location_url>

  <contact>
Hua Ai
</contact>  <fee>N/A</fee>  <extras>      </extras>  <location></location>  <media>      </media>  <hg_media>      </hg_media>  <boilerplate></boilerplate>  <boilerplate_text></boilerplate_text>  <sidebar></sidebar>  <related>      </related>  <files>      </files>  <groups>          <group id="66244">C21U</group>      </groups>  <categories>      </categories>  <event_terms>      </event_terms>  <event_audience>      </event_audience>  <keywords>      </keywords>  <userdata>        </userdata></node><node id="70334">
DEADLINE for final Techburst Video Submission
  <uid>27504</uid>

The Center for 21st Century Universities is proud to announce the First Annual Tech Burst Competition. What is required from instructors? How should the university support new experiments like this?

What are the legal and cost barriers of using games in higher education?

We will have a mixed group of traditional and nontraditional stakeholders there to discuss interesting and innovative ideas around using games in education at Georgia Tech. This course is open to anyone in the world, but only a select few—including students at Georgia Tech—are given credit for it.

What is a MOOC?

If you’re still reading, you’re probably asking, “That’s great. So what’s a MOOC?” A MOOC is a form of computer-mediated learning with each week’s lecturer providing course materials and discussion topics (streamed online) on that week’s theme. After each lecture, students are required to engage in the discussion; this can be in the form of a blog post, a vlog, a forum discussion or other interactions. Students will be evaluated based on their level of engagement within the community.

A MOOC differs from traditional distance-learning classrooms in a few key ways. In addition to allowing any interested parties to participate, all of the content produced from the course is shared by everyone involved. A MOOC is participatory—learners contribute to the class by building on the topics discussed, researching those topics further and then creating their own relevant content, which other students then comment on, critique, connect and share, creating a community of content shared by all.

What will the MOOC cover, and how will students be evaluated?

The direction this MOOC will take depends on who participates and how they interact. However, all discussion surrounding this MOOC will focus on the role of instructional technology in forming a student’s digital identity, the role of open learning communities (OLCs), and more.

Who is teaching the course?

Interested students can find a list of course facilitators plus many other details (course outline, discussion threads, blog posts, etc.) at the MOOC’s website: http://GTMOOC.com

How much does it cost?

Nothing! There is no cost to enroll.

Who is eligible to enroll?

Everyone. Like many Georgia Tech seminars, this MOOC promises to be of interest to undergraduate and graduate students alike, and all are welcome. And there is no class size limit—in fact, we invite all interested Georgia Tech students to participate.
