{"144921":{"#nid":"144921","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Building Construction Students Get Up-Close Look at Olympic Preparations","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EThe School of Building Construction recently hosted its eighth Summer Study Abroad Program in Europe.\u0026nbsp; It was an exciting time to be in England as students participated in two extraordinary, once-in-a-lifetime opportunities:\u0026nbsp; the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth and the preparations leading up to London hosting the 2012 Summer Olympics.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp; This year the program was\u0026nbsp;held at the University of Reading\u2019s School of Construction Management and Engineering--one of the world\u2019s largest, most prestigious, and top-rated institutions dealing with the built environment.\u0026nbsp; Professor Thomas M. Keel led the group of Georgia Tech students as they took courses and visited world-class construction firms and projects.\u0026nbsp; Students had to opportunity to speak with industry professionals from around the globe and visited in-progress projects that are now showcased on the national stage of the Olympics.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EHighlights of the trip included tours of:\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E- \u201cThe Shard,\u201d When completed, it will be the tallest building in Western Europe\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E- The ArcelorMittal Orbit, the tallest art structure in Britain and located in heart of the new Olympic Park.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E- The top of the British Telcom tower (which can only be visited by special permission and arrangement)\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E- The Tate Museum of Modern Art new extension project\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E- Heathrow airport and the construction of its new terminal building\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E- A one square city block, mixed-use construction complex still under construction\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E- Network Rail \u00a3850m project to upgrade Reading\u0027s railway line\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E- The old university town of Oxford, with a guided tour given by an American-born, Rhodes Scholar and Oxford professor\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe Summer 2013 Study Abroad Program in Building Construction will be held in the United Kingdom.\u0026nbsp;
