This underscores the \u2028importance of improving technical innovation. While engineers are\u2028 effective at organizing the design variable conflicts that require\u2028 creative designs, they are not very effective at the creative thinking \u2028required to discover these novel designs. Humorous improvisation has been\u2028 used effectively to produce the divergent thinking effective in creating\u2028 novel ideas in non-technical areas. However, improvisation has not proven\u2028 effective in producing novel technical designs. We have developed a new\u2028 method for applying improvisation to improve technical innovation that\u2028 addresses the inherent differences in the shape of technical and\u2028 non-technical idea space. This method requires a convergent and emergent\u2028 step, in addition to the divergent step inherent in humorous improvisation\u2028 to be effective in technical innovation.
