Since 2009, Georgia Tech has participated in this global event, which promotes Open Access as a new norm in scholarship and research.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAs part of Tech\u0027s campus-wide celebration, the Georgia Tech Library will host its annual Open Access General Lecture on \u003Cstrong\u003ETuesday, Oct. 23 from 3 \u2013 5 p.m. in the Klaus Advanced Computing Building, room 1116.\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/usefulchem.wikispaces.com\/\u0022\u003EDr. Jean-Claude Bradley\u003C\/a\u003E, associate professor of chemistry and e-learning coordinator at Drexel University, will deliver a presentation titled \u201cOpen Notebook Science: Transparency in Research.\u0022\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe presentation will outline strategies for collecting, processing, and disseminating chemical information as Open Data.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EBradley will discuss the following:\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003Eexamples involving melting point and solubility datasets and models\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003Edemonstrate how Open Notebook Science (ONS) can be used to maintain full provenance information between the original lab notebook pages and associated raw data up to the point of use\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003Ethe use of web services which allows for data access and querying through a browser interface or Google Spreadsheets using Google App Scripts\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003Cp\u003EA question and answer period, and an open discussion on the potential of ONS will follow the presentation.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EBradley leads the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/bit.ly\/Ty8XtQ\u0022\u003EUsefulChem project\u003C\/a\u003E, an initiative started in the summer of 2005 to make the scientific process as transparent as possible by publishing all research work in real time to a collection of public blogs, wikis, and other web pages. \u0026nbsp;He coined the term \u0027Open Notebook Science\u0027 to distinguish this approach from other more restricted forms of Open Science. In 2008, he created the Open Notebook Science Solubility Challenge to crowdsource the measurement of non-aqueous solubility.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ESponsored by Submeta, Sigma-Aldrich,\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003ENature\u003C\/em\u003E, and the Royal Society of Chemistry, the ONS Challenge has resulted in the publication of a book combining the results of 12 student award winners from the United States and the United Kingdom.
