Short-term Faculty Opportunity in Burma (engineering focus)

Project Description

Engineering Education (Jan – mid March 2013 start date): The Yangon Technological University is one of two science and technology-focused universities in Burma, with the second in Mandalay. YTU is under the Ministry of Science and Technology (rather than the Ministry of Education). Its senior leadership is eager to interact with American experts. In December, YTU will restart its BA level engineering program after a hiatus of over 10 years. Their Initial intake is 250 students. University freshmen must make a minimum score on their high school matriculation exam to enter a given discipline and/or university. This year YTU's required matriculation score is the highest all universities in Burma.

In a meeting on September 24, YTU expressed strong interest in bringing American experts to their university. When asked what subject they would prioritize, the pro-rector listed the many areas where they would like to receive assistance. Given this, we expect a Fulbright Specialist in engineering education would be welcomed.

Since the pro-rector couldn't give a specific priority field, if possible we'd like to get recommendations of a small group of possible candidates with different backgrounds/specializations within engineering education fields so that pro-rector could select the specialist that best suits YTU's needs. We would note, however, that YTU does not appear to have a lot of advanced technology in its labs at this time and, for this first project, it might be best to avoid focusing on areas that would be technology dependent.

Please note that the dates are tentative and are likely to be adjusted.
