Representing one of the largest classes of Georgia Tech GLIP interns in the program\u2019s history, students selected for the 2013 legislative session include:\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EMichael De la Guardia\u003C\/strong\u003E, economics and international affairs major from Duluth, Ga.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EDerek Jett\u003C\/strong\u003E, public policy major from Newnan, Ga.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ETejas Kotak\u003C\/strong\u003E, environmental engineering major from Lawrenceville, Ga.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EAaron Morgan\u003C\/strong\u003E, public policy major from Silver Creek, Ga.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EAlyssa Nordin\u003C\/strong\u003E, international affairs major from Peachtree City, Ga.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EBhavik Pandya\u003C\/strong\u003E, economics and international affairs major from Canton, Ga.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ETatiana Posada\u003C\/strong\u003E, international affairs major from Euharlee, Ga.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EMary Shoemaker\u003C\/strong\u003E, public policy major from Smyrna, Ga.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EOlivia Watkins\u003C\/strong\u003E, international affairs and Spanish major from Tucker, Ga.\u0026nbsp; \u0026nbsp; \u0026nbsp; \u0026nbsp; \u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIn addition to the students selected for the GLIP program, Tech student \u003Cstrong\u003EBonnie Gaupp\u003C\/strong\u003E of Thomasville, Ga., is serving as an intern in the office of Georgia Tech alumnus and State Representative Mike Dudgeon, and Norcross-native \u003Cstrong\u003EJason Lupuloff\u003C\/strong\u003E is serving in the office of Senator John Albers.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ETech students are sought after for other public policy internship positions as well. At the Capitol this session are \u003Cstrong\u003ERoma Amin\u003C\/strong\u003E, from Athens, Ga., who is working with private firm Cornerstone Communications; and \u003Cstrong\u003EEmily Roby-Phillips\u003C\/strong\u003E of Roswell, Ga., who serves with the Georgia Department of Economic Development.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EEach year, Georgia Tech\u2019s Office of Government and Community Relations assists in recruitment for the GLIP program beginning in late summer. Applicants are selected by House and Senate staff and placed in positions at the State Capitol, where duties might include tracking legislation; performing constituent services or media assistance; and writing bill summaries.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EGLIP student Derek Jett, now in his fourth year at Georgia Tech, works for Speaker Pro Tempore of the House of Representatives, Jan Jones, who represents parts of Fulton County.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThis placement [in the Office of Representative Jones] is perfect for me considering I am always embracing a challenge,\u201d he said. \u201cSome of my duties include researching legislation, speaking with constituents regarding public policy issues and accumulating data for House bills.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThird-year student Alyssa Nordin is a House of Representatives intern for Representative Chuck Martin, Chairman of the Budget and Fiscal Affairs Oversight Committee; Representative Tom Weldon, Chairman of the Juvenile Justice Committee; and Representative Matt Ramsey, Vice-Chairman of the Majority Caucus.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u201cIn my work at the Capitol, what I enjoy most is researching information about potential and assigned bills and attending committee meetings,\u201d she said. \u201cI have learned about legal processes and analyzing policies, which will help me in my future career. The most valuable part of this internship has been meeting new people including representatives, senators, lobbyists and administrative assistants. This group has taught me so much through their dedication and passion to better our state.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EOftentimes, students are invited back to serve during subsequent sessions.
