Recipients of the certificate will be able to demonstrate a special competence in applying a holistic, cultural research lens to their home discipline research.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cToday, whether working as a project leader in industry or as a researcher in academia, the ability to communicate the social value of research is more important than ever,\u201d said\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003EAnne Pollock\u003C\/strong\u003E, assistant professor in the\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003ESchool of Literature, Media, and Communication\u003C\/strong\u003E, and the certificate\u2019s main coordinator. \u201cThe courses in the certificate are an excellent opportunity to hone critical thinking and written and oral communication, and to demonstrate that competence to future employers.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe certificate was an idea formulated in faculty brainstorming sessions organized by\u003Cstrong\u003E\u0026nbsp;Dean Jacqueline Royster\u003C\/strong\u003E\u0026nbsp;in 2010, at the start of her tenure as dean.\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003EJohn Krige\u003C\/strong\u003E, professor in the\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003ESchool of History, Technology, and Society\u003C\/strong\u003E, convened an STS Graduate Seminar in the Fall of 2011 as a first step toward an official certificate.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cScience and engineering students who wish to be leaders in their careers simply cannot function successfully unless they are aware of the historical, sociological, economical, international, and political implications of what they do,\u201d said Krige. \u201cWherever they lever their training they will be embedded in a social world.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ENearly one dozen faculty members signed up to teach a session, a true reflection of the diversity and richness of both STS studies and IAC research.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ERobert Rosenberger\u003C\/strong\u003E, assistant professor in the\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003ESchool of Public Policy\u003C\/strong\u003E, was a guest lecturer in the seminar and appreciated working with students from other disciplines.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u0022Now I\u0027m on the dissertation committee of a student I met during that session,\u0022 he said. \u0022The different disciplinary backgrounds of the students\u2013and me too, I\u0027m a philosopher\u2013lead to consistently strong discussions.\u0022\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIn the fall of 2012, the certificate received sponsorship of IAC schools. It was approved by the Institute\u2019s Graduate Curriculum Committee in January, by the Academic Senate in February, and the University System of Georgia in March. While the certificate\u2019s required courses have been taught over the past year as a trial run, the Registrar notified the Board of Regents in March that classes will be offered in Fall 2013, making the certificate official.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ECarol Colatrella\u003C\/strong\u003E, associate dean of graduate studies in the Ivan Allen College, emphasized the necessity of students from any area of study to consider the \u201chuman dimensions\u201d of the science, technology, engineering, and math research offered by the certificate.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cIt is not enough to invent or to improve technologies and technical processes.
