{"208381":{"#nid":"208381","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Office of the Arts Earns Grant to Advance Artist\u0027s Residency","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EThe Doris Duke Charitable Foundation has named Georgia Tech\u2019s \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.arts.gatech.edu\/about\/372\u0022\u003EOffice of the Arts\u003C\/a\u003E one of 10 teams of performing arts organizations and artists nationwide that will receive a combined total of $1.475 million for their efforts to develop public demand for jazz, theatre and\/or contemporary dance.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIn its two-year, $150,000 project, Georgia Tech and choreographer Jonah Bokaer will work together to develop \u201cApplied Movement: App Development for Choreography,\u201d which will be a framework consisting of software components that enable groups to participate in a shared movement-based artistic and educational experience by using their mobile phones.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIn 2010-2011, \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.jonahbokaer.net\/biography\/en\/p__c-1\/\u0022\u003EJonah Bokaer\u003C\/a\u003E participated as an \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.ferstcenter.gatech.edu\/plugins\/content\/index.php?id=17\u0022\u003EARTech resident artist\u003C\/a\u003E at Georgia Tech and through that residency he laid the ground work for further development with these constituent groups: the students and faculty of Georgia Tech; the local dance community; and the students of our partner elementary schools, Drew Charter School and Centennial Place Elementary. In this new project he will continue to work with these three groups.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EUnlike most residency programs, which focus on the creation of new work and creative time for artists, the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.ddcf.org\/Programs\/Arts\/Initiatives--Strategies\/Doris-Duke-Performing-Artist-Initiative\/Doris-Duke-Building-Demand-for-the-Arts\/\u0022\u003EDoris Duke Artist Residencies to Build Demand for the Arts\u003C\/a\u003E grants instead support partnerships between artists and organizations collaborating in inventive ways to create and pilot methods for reaching the public and developing their interest in and access to the performing arts. These partnerships also promote deeper, longer relationships as well as new kinds of conversation and cooperation between organizations and artists.
