The scalability of manufacturing processes exhibits substantial variation contingent upon numerous factors, including the specific process characteristics, employed technology and equipment, and the availability of resources. Scalability is not a universally linear concept; rather, it hinges upon multifaceted considerations. In numerous instances, the expansion of composite manufacturing processes necessitates thorough process optimization to uphold product quality and efficiency. The efficacy of this optimization hinges upon the extent to which the process can be seamlessly adapted to produce larger components or the scaling up of production volumes. In this talk we will shed the light on several examples of scaling up different manufacturing processes, such as thermoplastic and thermoset Additive Manufacturing (AM) processes, compression molding for automotive parts, as well as the facilitation of pioneering integrated polymer manufacturing processes. One of the foremost advantages offered by data-driven manufacturing lies in its capacity to foster continuous improvement. This talk will encompass different data-driven scalability aspects ranging from material development, advanced materials characterization, system integration, data analysis, and economic considerations. Through the accumulation and systematic analysis of data over time, manufacturers can identify trends and pinpoint opportunities for refinement, both within the manufacturing process itself and in the end-product.

BIO:
Ahmed Arabi Hassen, PhD, is the Group Leader for the Composites Innovation (CI) Group in the Manufacturing Science Division (MSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Electronic defect passivation and suppression of detrimental charge-carrier recombination at the different device interfaces has been used as a strategy to achieve high performance perovskite solar cells. However, the mechanisms that allow for carriers to be transferred across these interfaces are still unknown. Through the contributions to better understand 2D and 3D defects the perovskite solar cell field has been able to improve device performance. Albeit the rapid improvements in performance, there is still a need to understand how these defects affect long term structural stability and thus optoelectronic performance over the long term. In this presentation, I will discuss the role of crystal surface structural defects on optoelectronic properties of lead halide perovskites through synchrotron-based techniques. The importance of interfaces and their contribution to detrimental recombination will also be discussed. AM enables a new design space to realize increased capabilities. However, unlike conventional materials, there are highly coupled and complex design, structure, process and performance relationships for AM parts. While the general use of AM for prototyping to advance science and technology is well noted, ONR is exploring new and novel approaches in developing and understanding AM materials and manufacturing processes for naval applications.

Advancements in computational modeling and simulation, digital design, and digital manufacturing is a rich and evolving landscape. At this intersection with AM, ONR believes that fundamental science can be explored to reduce current AM manufacturing and implementation costs for optimized AM materials and processes. Automotive and electronic manufacturing are the classic success stories where robotic systems have demonstrated incredible value for the industry. The tasks performed by the robots almost exclusively involve the manipulation or interacting with objects whose physical properties are known a priori and the objects are rigid and dry. In the many manufacturing sectors, robotic systems must be able to work in an unstructured environment where every product is unique, deformable and even wet. This presentation will discuss various approaches to enable autonomous solutions to these problems. This will include software to minimize manual programming of robots as well systems that integrate advanced perception and control technologies to perform complex tasks like cutting, grasping, and manipulation.

Bio: Gary McMurray is a Principal Research Engineer and Division Chief for the Intelligent Sustainable Technologies Division at the Georgia Tech Research Institute. evidence of distributed additive manufacturing networks revolutionizing supply chains to meet drastic, sudden shifts in demand for life-saving medical equipment in times of a global pandemic makes evident that additive manufacturing technologies are at a tipping point of enabling local, on-demand, fit-for-purpose manufacturing that transforms societies. Machine learning is also transforming societies, but it is yet to be widely adopted in metals additive manufacturing technologies. This seminar will introduce pitfalls, successes, and open challenges in application of machine learning to innovate metals additive manufacturing technologies using case studies from my career. Pitfalls will be discussed through an example of my first attempts to use machine learning to create a statistical qualification means for companies. Success will be demonstrated through more recent results using machine learning together with pre-existing data to statistically inform the onboarding of a new laser powder bed fusion machine with a more powerful laser than the previous state of the art. These case studies will motivate a summary of current recommended best practices for deciding when, how, and why to use machine learning in metals additive manufacturing, or more broadly any materials or manufacturing problem, including how to verify that the answer is reliable. In conclusion, open challenges will be framed through the lens of a vision for establishing the Advanced Manufacturing Pilot Facility at Georgia Tech as an epicenter for future decades of research and innovation of artificially intelligent metals manufacturing systems.

Bio: Prof. Stebner works at the intersection of manufacturing, machine learning, materials, and mechanics. Manufacturers require improved agility and flexibility to address these challenges as well as disruptions in the production environment and fluctuations in market and customer demand. Tackling these needs has been difficult because the components of production systems do not typically communicate or coordinate effectively with each other even though their operations may be intimately connected. Smart Manufacturing (or Industry 4.0) provides solutions to overcome these barriers, such as the Model-Based Enterprise (MBE) and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), which enable interaction and collaboration across a network of
interconnected production systems through the use of digital models for improved decision making and control. These solutions require the effective exchange of semantic data using open, broadly adopted, consensus-based standards that scale and support the relatively large variety of data, data sources, and data consumers in a production environment.

This presentation will describe efforts in the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) MBE Program to develop standards-based approached that enable the deployment and use of smart manufacturing on the shop floor. The MBE concept will be defined as well as the key industry use cases that have motivated much of the MBE-related research. Examples of NIST research will be highlighted, including: (1) collection and synthesis of shop-floor data to support capability modeling of manufacturing equipment and systems; (2) scalable data architectures to distribute data from a mix of shop-floor sources; and (3) interfaces to enable systems integration for more decentralized, choreography-based control of production systems.

Bio: Moneer Helu is the Acting Division Chief of the Systems Integration Division of the Engineering Laboratory at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Before all that, there was only Marco Zani, a young engineering student, who during his studies out of curiosity had approached additive manufacturing. It didn't take long for this curiosity to turn into a real passion. Marco's life was divided between his lectures at the university and the development of his first 3D printers. This passion was soon discovered by others, in fact in 2015 Marco presented his 3D printer at the Expo of Milan, where he won as the best innovative startup. In a short time, Mark One received other recognitions, just to name a few: Smau Berlin, Wolf Summit Poland, Forbes France, Forbes Italy etc. All these recognitions are not only the result of a simple idea, but they are the direct result of constant dedication, innovation and sacrifice, which led Marco together with the team of Mark One to develop and propose unique 3D printers, which have become a guarantee in the world of the Italian industry and beyond.
