{"233011":{"#nid":"233011","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Address Highlights Tech\u2019s \u2018Positive Momentum\u2019","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EFrom President Barack Obama mentioning Georgia Tech\u2019s new online\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.gatech.edu\/newsroom\/release.html?nid=212951\u0022\u003EMaster\u2019s Degree in Computer Science\u003C\/a\u003E in a speech in Buffalo, N.Y., to Nick Selby\u2019s Convocation speech going viral, Georgia Tech seems to be on the tip of everyone\u2019s tongue lately.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThese are just two examples of Tech\u2019s \u201cpositive momentum\u201d that President G.P. \u201cBud\u201d Peterson mentioned during his annual Institute Address last Thursday.\u0026nbsp; \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cWhen we launched our strategic plan three years ago, we introduced an ambitious vision \u2014 we wanted \u2018What does Georgia Tech think?\u2019 to be a common question asked by those in research, business, the media, and government,\u201d he said. \u201cInitially, I didn\u2019t think it fit Tech\u2019s style, but I\u2019ve come to realize that those five words summarize our potential impact.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe teaching of massive open online courses (MOOCs) is one area where Tech has shown thought leadership.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cWe started offering MOOCs a year ago, and so far, we\u2019ve had more than 400,000 students enroll in 14 courses,\u201d Peterson said.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EHe added that students studying on campus are also benefiting from the MOOCs. For example, many faculty members are embracing the flipped classroom model where lectures are provided online and class time is reserved for discussion and activities.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ETech also continues to become a more established innovation hub. On Aug. 27, the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.gatech.edu\/newsroom\/release.html?nid=232201\u0022\u003EAT\u0026amp;T Foundry\u003C\/a\u003E opened in Tech Square \u2014 which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Additionally, Peterson mentioned that this year, Tech\u2019s Advanced Technology Development Center was ranked by Forbes as one of 12 business incubators that are changing the world.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAs another way to engage students and faculty in the innovation process, the Institute has launched\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/starter.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ETechStarter\u003C\/a\u003E, the world\u2019s first peer-reviewed, university-based, crowd funding platform for science and engineering research projects.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EDuring the address, Peterson also touched on the following:\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003EAs part of the Arts@Tech initiative, campus is currently hosting the 15-piece international sculpture exhibition \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.gatech.edu\/newsroom\/release.html?nid=229901\u0022\u003EEngineered Art.\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003ETech is in the midst of its 10-year reaffirmation process by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EA Strategic Plan Advisory Group has been created to provide advice and recommendations to Institute leadership regarding the continued implementation of the plan.
