Assoc. Prof. Dagenhart calls for more design and less zoning

The field of urban design spends an incredible amount of time studying large cities, but small non-urban towns such as Moreland, Georgia can lend equally relevant observations on the experience of the individual within a built environment. Through the study of small towns, Georgia Tech's Richard Dagenhart observed, "We spend most of our time arguing over zoning ordinances and changes, but zoning is concerned with the least permanent parts of cities." Instead, Dagenhart believes that we should spend more time on the design of public works "which make up the civic framework that gives an identity to our communities and our citizens and are more lasting than the town’s private buildings and land uses."
