Target audience: Early graduate students 1st-3rd year

Advice: Do you think about the details of your interactions with potential employers?  What do employers notice during interactions at company info sessions, career fairs, conferences, or while candidates wait in the lobby for the interview? Do recruiters remember students and or  make  judgments make based on  emails, demeanor, dress, and etiquette?  What questions should be asked (and to whom) prior to an interview? How do you recover if you make a mistake? Get inside information scoop from recruiters and decision makers.

Advice: What can you negotiate in a non-academic job? How does the negotiation process work? Can an organization be rescind an offer? Do employers expect graduate students to negotiate? Can other offers leverage a better salary? When should negotiation take place? Can I negotiate via email? How much time between initial offer and deadline for acceptance? Can a student ask for more time? Do recruiters share information?

Advice: What can I negotiate? How much do I request? Resources for Deterring Salary, Research Assistants, Lab, Graduate and Undergraduate Assistants, Course Load etc.

With hundreds of students studying architecture, city and regional planning, and public policy, there is a large pool of students seeking either permanent positions or summer internships.  Even if you are not currently hiring, this information exchange and recruiting forum is a great way to build your profile with our students and faculty.  If you are anticipating hiring, it will be an opportunity to meet and network with many great candidates.

Exhibitor setup begins at 10:30.  Lunch will be available at noon.  The open fair runs from 1:00-4:00pm.

 Kalanithy Vairavamoorthy is an internationally-recognized expert on urban water issues who has worked to create clean and sustainable water and sanitation systems through programs for UNESCO and the European Union.  He currently directs the USF School of Global Sustainability. In his career, Vairavamoorthy has led groups of researchers studying the future of sustainable water systems for cities and how urban areas might respond to water issues in the face of climate change and population growth. His current research is in: development of new techniques for the flexible design of urban water supply systems operating under uncertainties associated with global change; application of optimization techniques for the operation & maintenance and life-cycle management of urban water systems; and, development of risk assessment approach for the design of sustainable urban water systems operating in the ‘city of the future’.  Dean Vairavamoorthy earned a PhD in environmental and water resources engineering from Imperial College, London. 

Green Infrastructure: Sustainable and natural management techniques that harvest, treat and utilize rain runoff in greenspaces such as parks, bio-swales, constructed wetlands and rooftop gardens, diverting water away from and reducing a need for traditional "gray" infrastructure (i.e. sewers and drainage pipes). 

All over the country, communities and municipalities are implementing ground-breaking projects that leverage rainwater runoff and green infrastructure techniques to build innovative parks and greenspaces. In addition to improving water quality, these new greenspaces can catalyze redevelopment, mitigate storm water flooding, provide off-road transportation corridors, transform neighborhoods, and often provide community amenities where none existed previously. 

The 2014 Parks and Greenspace Conference will highlight existing opportunities for development, inspire cooperation from diverse partners, and influence decision-makers to creatively solve problems concerning infrastructure while producing wonderful parks and greenspaces that provide multiple benefits to communities.
