{"300981":{"#nid":"300981","#data":{"type":"news","title":"ISyE Alumnus Dr. Peter Rhee Releases Memoir, TRAUMA RED: The Making of a Surgeon in War and in America\u2019s Cities","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EDr. Peter Rhee, BS Health Systems 1983, recently released a mesmerizing memoir depicting his life as a trauma surgeon.\u0026nbsp; Co-written with reporter Gordon Dillow, Rhee shares the demanding training surgeons take on, the considerations that go into setting up a top of the line trauma center, and the preparation required in making split-second, life-or-death decisions.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EHis book, \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/uaatwork.arizona.edu\/uannounce\/ua-bookstores-hosts-book-launch-dr-peter-rhee\u0022\u003ETRAUMA RED: The Making of a Surgeon in War and in America\u2019s Cities \u003C\/a\u003Echronicles the patient cases he has handled over two decades on two distinct fronts \u2013in Iraq and Afghanistan, where he served as a frontline U.S. Navy surgeon, and the urban zones of Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., where he has been confronted by an endless stream of victims of civilian violence and accidents.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIn his book, Dr. Rhee recalls the fateful day of being called into work on ten gunshot victims from a man who opened fire on a crowd of people at a local supermarket. One of the victims was Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. It was a day the nation would never forget, but for Rhee, it was also just another day on the job.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ECompetent and tough, he spent his childhood in South Korea and Uganda, where he once watched his surgeon father remove a spear from a man\u2019s belly. \u0026nbsp;This incident was the turning point in his life motivating him to pursue a lifelong interest in patient care.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EDr. Rhee is now the Chief of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, Burns \u0026amp; Emergency Surgery as well as the Marin Gluck Professor of Surgery at the University of Arizona.\u0026nbsp; And as you can imagine, he carries a list of post-nominal initials after his name including MD, MPH, FACS, FCCM, and DMCC.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EHe gracefully balances his demanding career as a world-renowned surgeon with an active research agenda and teaching load. His days, he said, are long and arduous but also extremely rewarding.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cA typical day is not typical for me. I had no idea that I would be working as an academician and that means that there is a lot of travel involved for conferences and symposiums as well as from a regulatory point of view.\u0026nbsp; The clinical job is my savior as that is when I get to do professionally what I was trained to do and love to do. \u0026nbsp;The daily workload includes patient care, meetings to improve the systems in the hospital as well as teaching and constant innovating and problem solving,\u201d said Rhee.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EWhen asked if his Georgia Tech degree in Health Systems has helped him in his career he said, \u201cI have an upper hand on the health care system and the issues globally than the other surgeons who did not have this degree.
