Boston on Black Unemployment

Thomas “Danny” Boston, professor of economics in The Sam Nunn School of International Affairs said the jobs report issued July 3 by the U.S. Labor Department contains several signs the economy continues to improve. The report (accessible here) indicates the nation’s unemployment rate should dip into the 5 percent range within the next month.

The unemployment rate among black continue to decline, which Boston writes is a positive indicator as unemployment among blacks is particularly intractable.

"Last month it declined by almost a full percentage point, from 11.5 percent to 10.7 percent. Employment gains among blacks have always trailed gains of every other demographic group. So when their rate shows improvement, rates among other groups have already recovered."
