The immune system is Nature’s engine for evolutionary warfare, responsible for detecting invasion, developing molecular and cellular modes of attack, producing those weapons in quantity, and keeping a few of them in storage in case the invaders return. Enough is now known about how this is done to begin to use immunity for a variety of biomedical purposes. These include fighting diseases such as cancer that the immune system does not normally recognize, correcting mistakes in the immune response that cause autoimmune and inflammatory conditions, avoiding the immune system when we want to deliver or implant a foreign substance, and assessing immune response to report on a patient’s past, current, and future health.  The field represents a true example of convergent science, with biologists, chemists, physicists, engineers, and computational scientists coming together to understand the fundamentals and develop new ways to treat human diseases. The distinguished speakers in this year’s Suddath Symposium will describe an exciting mix of investigation and manipulation of the immune system, from basic science to engineered systems, providing essential knowledge for anyone hoping to make an impact on fundamental and applied bioscience.

The Suddath Symposium is held annually to celebrate the life and contribution of F.L. "Bud" Suddath by discussing the latest developments in the fields of bioengineering and bioscience.
