  <title><![CDATA[GVU Center Announces 2014 Foley Scholars]]></title>
  <body><![CDATA[<p>The <a href="http://gvu.gatech.edu/">GVU Center</a> at Georgia Tech this week announced the 2014 Foley Scholars, the center’s highest student honor that recognizes top graduate students for outstanding research contributions.</p><p>The Foley Scholars for 2014 are:</p><ul><li><strong>Mason Bretan</strong>, a Ph.D. candidate in music technology, who researches robotic musicianship by developing systems that interact with humans through musical scenarios.</li><li><strong>Deana Brown</strong>, a Ph.D. student in human-centered computing, who designs, prototypes and studies social and ubiquitous technologies.</li><li><strong>Alex Zook</strong>, a Ph.D. candidate in human-centered computing, who researches the creation of artificially intelligent (AI) systems that can augment game design and development.</li></ul><p>The students will be recognized at the Foley Scholars Dinner on Wednesday, Oct. 29.</p><p>The Foley Scholars were selected from a group of eight accomplished finalists, all showing tremendous potential and impact in shaping technology for a broad range of challenges in modern society. The other finalists include <strong>Laura Barg-Walkow</strong>, <strong>Casey Fiesler</strong>,<strong> Hwajung Hong</strong>, <strong>Aditi Misra</strong>, and <strong>Andrew Quitmeyer</strong>.</p><p>The <a href="http://gvu-web2.cc.gatech.edu/research/grants-and-scholarships/james-d-foley-gvu-center-endowment#About Foley Scholars">James D. Foley GVU Center Endowment</a> provides graduate fellowships of $5,000. The scholarship is awarded on a merit basis for overall brilliance and potential impact of student research. The scholarship is made possible through the generous contributions of donors committed to supporting the GVU community’s student scholars and their work.</p>]]></body>
