Pardue, PhD\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EAssociate Professor, Department of Ophthalmology\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EEmory University\u003Cbr \/\u003EResearch Career Scientist, Atlanta VA Medical Center\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ESeminar\u0026nbsp;will be made available via videoconference in the Health Sciences Research Building, room E182 and Technology Enterprise Park, room 208.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EExercise is a common intervention for rehabilitation of motor, and more recently, cognitive function.\u0026nbsp; While the mechanisms are complex, brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) contributes significantly to these neuroprotective effects.\u0026nbsp; Age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma are the leading causes of blindness with few effective treatments to stop or slow the progression of vision loss.\u0026nbsp; Our data shows that exercise protects retinal function and structure in rodent models of retinal degeneration and diabetic retinopathy through BDNF signaling pathways.\u0026nbsp; Exercise is a noninvasive, inexpensive rehabilitation therapy that can be started early in the course of disease.\u0026nbsp; In addition, it shows promise as a pleiotropic intervention for multiple retinal diseases and for complications of systemic disease, such as cognitive and retinal dysfunction in diabetes.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.bme.gatech.edu\/bme\/faculty\/C.%20Ross-Ethier\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ERoss Ethier, PhD\u003C\/a\u003E - faculty host\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E","summary":null,"format":"limited_html"}],"field_subtitle":"","field_summary":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003ESpecial Biomedical Engineering Seminar -\u0026nbsp;\u0022Neuroprotective Effects of Exercise on Retinal Disease\u0022 - Machelle T.
