{"346011":{"#nid":"346011","#data":{"type":"news","title":"ISyE Faculty, Students, and Alumni Honored at 2014 INFORMS Annual Meeting","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EOnce again, faculty, students, and alumni in the Stewart School of Industrial \u0026amp; Systems Engineering (ISyE) were among those selected as winners for the various prizes and awards given at the 2014 INFORMS Annual Meeting, held November 9\u003Csup\u003Eth\u003C\/sup\u003E through 12\u003Csup\u003Eth\u003C\/sup\u003E in San Francisco, California.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWinners:\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EKevin Hongfan Chen\u003C\/strong\u003E, IE 2014, and currently a Ph.D. student at the University of Chicago, won the INFORMS Undergraduate Operations Research Award for his paper \u003Cem\u003ERobust Demand Response Portfolio Management under Operational Uncertainty\u003C\/em\u003E, co-authored by ISyE Associate Professor \u003Cstrong\u003EShijie Deng\u003C\/strong\u003E and ISyE Assistant Professor \u003Cstrong\u003EAndy Sun, \u003C\/strong\u003Ewho he was supervised by.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EISyE postdoc\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003EMonica Gentili\u003C\/strong\u003E,\u0026nbsp;Coca-Cola Associate Professor\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003ENicoleta Serban\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/strong\u003Eand\u0026nbsp;Harold R. and Mary Anne Nash Associate Professor \u003Cstrong\u003EJulie Swann\u003C\/strong\u003E won the INFORMS 2014 Best Paper Award in the Public Sector in OR Section with their paper titled \u003Cem\u003EWhat are the areas in need for Improving Spatial Access to Pediatric Primary Care?\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EFatma Kilinc-Karzan\u003C\/strong\u003E, Ph.D. IE 2011, won the 2014 JFIG Best Paper competition for her paper titled \u003Cem\u003ETwo-Term Disjunctions on the Second-Order Cone.\u003C\/em\u003E She is currently an assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon and while at ISyE was a student of John Hunter Chair and Professor \u003Cstrong\u003EArkadi Nemirovski.\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EISyE alum\u003Cstrong\u003E, Jeff Linderoth\u003C\/strong\u003E, Ph.D. IE 1998, won the 2014 INFORMS Computing Society Prize. His advisor while at ISyE was James C. Edenfield Chair, \u003Cstrong\u003EMartin Savelsbergh.\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EHao Yan\u003C\/strong\u003E, ISyE Ph.D. student, co-advised by ISyE Assistant Professor \u003Cstrong\u003EKamran Paynabar \u003C\/strong\u003Eand Carolyn J. Stewart Chair and Professor \u003Cstrong\u003EJan Shi\u003C\/strong\u003E, won the \u003Cem\u003E2014 INFORMS Data Mining Best Student Paper Award Competition.\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ESecond place:\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EISyE Ph.D. student \u003Cstrong\u003ETonghoon Suk\u003C\/strong\u003E took home second place in the 2014 George E. Nicholson Student Paper Competition, for the paper \u003Cem\u003ERandomized longest-queue-first scheduling for large-scale buffered systems \u003C\/em\u003Eco-authored with advisor ISyE Fouts Family Associate Professor \u003Cstrong\u003ETon Dieker\u003C\/strong\u003E.\u0026nbsp; Their paper will appear in the \u003Cem\u003EJournal of\/Advances in Applied Probability.\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EThird place:\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EISyE Assistant Professor\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003EAndy Sun\u003C\/strong\u003E\u0026nbsp;won third place in the 2014 JFIG Best Paper competition for the paper titled \u003Cem\u003EMultistage Adaptive Robust Optimization for Electric Power Systems Operatio, \u003C\/em\u003Eco-authored by\u003Cem\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/em\u003EISyE Ph.D. student\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003EAlvaro Lorca.\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E \u003Cbr \/\u003E \u003Cstrong\u003EFinalists:\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EThe Gwinnett County\u003C\/strong\u003E Senior Design team\u0026nbsp;was a finalist for the 2014 INFORMS Doing Good with Good OR Student Paper Competition for their paper \u003Cem\u003EResource Allocation and Optimization for Advanced Voting in Gwinnett County. \u003C\/em\u003ETeam members include\u0026nbsp;Mehran D\u2019souza,\u0026nbsp;Shi Gan, Andrew Luff, Peiqi Yang and they were advised by ISyE Fouts Family Associate Professor \u003Cstrong\u003ETon Dieker\u003C\/strong\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EThe World Food Program\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/strong\u003ESenior Design team was a finalist for the 2014 INFORMS Doing Good with Good OR Student Paper Competition.\u0026nbsp; Team members include Maria Ayers, Laxmi Sangeeta Gadepalli, Ashfaque Kachwala, Tahsin Munir, Cane Punma, Gabriel Rodriguez, and Yuvraj Singh and they were advised by ISyE Adjunct Professor\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003EOzlem Ergun.\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EISyE Professor \u003Cstrong\u003EEva Lee\u003C\/strong\u003E and ISyE Ph.D. student \u003Cstrong\u003EFan Yaun\u003C\/strong\u003E were finalists for the 2014 Daniel H. Wagner Prize for Excellence in Operations Research Practice. This is a joint project with the CDC Strategic National Stockpile and Global Disease Detection and Emergency Response.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EJisu Jason Park\u003C\/strong\u003E, ISyE Ph.D. student, was a finalist for the 2014 INFORMS Undergraduate Operations Research Prize. His advisor is ISyE Assistant Professor \u003Cstrong\u003ESeong-Hee Kim\u003C\/strong\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EISyE Ph.D. student\u003Cstrong\u003E Linwei Xin\u003C\/strong\u003E, co-advised by ISyE Professor \u003Cstrong\u003EAlex Shapiro\u003C\/strong\u003E and Assistant Professor \u003Cstrong\u003EDave Goldberg,\u003C\/strong\u003E was a finalist\u0026nbsp;in the MSOM student paper competition for his paper\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003EOptimality gap of constant-order policies decays\u0026nbsp;exponentially in the lead time for lost sales models.\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAlso of note, the INFORMS Board appointed \u003Cstrong\u003EMartin Savelsbergh, \u003C\/strong\u003EJames C.
