{"357011":{"#nid":"357011","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Funding for ATDC, Holland Plant Among Legislative Priorities","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EAs the 2015 legislative session approaches, Georgia Tech\u2019s Office of Government and Community Relations will be focused on conveying Tech\u2019s legislative priorities to Georgia\u2019s leaders. \u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cAmong our top priorities this year is securing $1.9 million to expand our startup incubator, ATDC,\u201d said vice president Dene Sheheane. \u201cThis funding would enable us to build out existing space and staff to support new companies in clean energy, nanotechnology and advanced computing. By capitalizing on strong momentum and expertise in entrepreneurship at Tech, we would be helping create more companies and more jobs in Georgia.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIn addition, Sheheane and his colleagues will also advocate for the following initiatives:\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ESecure $5 million for the modernization and expansion of the Holland Plant.\u003C\/strong\u003E This upgrade would provide additional capacity to provide air conditioning to 75 of Tech\u2019s 200 buildings on campus, including the Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons, the Campus Recreation Center, as well as several residence halls and academic buildings.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EStrengthen support for Georgia Tech \u201cB-Units.\u201d \u003C\/strong\u003EThe \u201cB\u201d budget supports non-academic economic development programs. This funding maintains our ability to leverage state funds and attract significant external funding through the Enterprise Innovation Institute (EI2) and Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI).\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003Cp\u003ETogether with the University System of Georgia, the Georgia Tech team will also work to secure important budgetary items:\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003E$44.4 million in new Formula Funds\u003C\/strong\u003E to be shared among all University System of Georgia institutions. Funding supports critical day-to-day operations and is essential to maintaining academic quality.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003E$60 million in Major Repair and Rehabilitation Funds\u003C\/strong\u003E to repair aging facilities across the System. Georgia Tech\u2019s allocation will be directed toward more than $100 million in deferred maintenance needs.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cGeorgia Tech has consistently benefitted from strong support from the state,\u201d said Sheheane. \u201cLast year we received planning funds for the renewal of the Georgia Tech Library, which will be moving forward over the next year.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cWe are fortunate that Georgia has the seventh highest appropriation for higher education in the nation,\u201d he added.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ETo demonstrate their appreciation for ongoing support from state lawmakers, the Georgia Tech community will convene at the State Capitol for the annual Georgia Tech Student Day at the Capitol on January 13, the second day of the 2015 session. \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.calendar.gatech.edu\/event\/344511\u0022\u003ELearn more about Student Day at the Capitol \u0026gt;\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EDuring the legislative session, the Office of Government and Community Relations also engages external partners in sharing Tech\u2019s story.
