{"359891":{"#nid":"359891","#data":{"type":"news","title":"LMC Creates Calling Card with Humanistic Perspectives in a Technological World","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp class=\u0022p1\u0022\u003EWhile the nationwide push for STEM education has caused hand-wringing and eraser-gnawing in some English departments, Tech\u2019s \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.iac.gatech.edu\/faculty-and-staff\/faculty\/bio\/utz\u0022\u003ESchool of Literature, Media, and Communication\u003C\/a\u003E (LMC) has long worked within this reality, as reflected in its first-ever book, \u003Cem\u003EHumanistic Perspectives in a Technological World\u003C\/em\u003E. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p5\u0022\u003EFilled with photos and essays by LMC faculty as well as statements from academics and administrators across campus, the 140-page hardbound volume was the brainchild of LMC Department Chair \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.iac.gatech.edu\/faculty-and-staff\/faculty\/bio\/utz\u0022\u003ERichard Utz.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p5\u0022\u003E\u201cYou will not find a single institution that has something like this, where every tenure-line faculty member, plus Brittain fellows, have contributed 1,000-word essays,\u201d Utz pointed out. \u201cYou know why? Because people will say no!\u201d\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p5\u0022\u003EAs an external candidate for department chair a few years back, Utz searched the internet for \u201cLMC,\u201d and the primary result was \u201clarge magellanic cloud.\u201d\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p5\u0022\u003E\u201cIt\u2019s a nebula with a lot of star activity,\u201d he explained. \u201cAnd that seemed to describe what LMC is \u2014 a lot of great, fantastic individual researchers and groups, but not necessarily a unit that recognizes that it\u2019s because we\u2019re in the same place that many of our activities are possible. So how do you get people to think about what everybody else is doing? By creating a volume that \u2018binds\u2019 everybody together.\u201d\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p5\u0022\u003EHis hope is that the book will spark more conversations and collaborations among faculty. He sees it as a \u201ccalling card\u201d that will give other disciplines, alumni, and prospective students more awareness and appreciation for how LMC contributes to the Tech education and experience.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p5\u0022\u003EThe majority of Tech students, regardless of major, take several LMC classes throughout their undergraduate career, but Utz\u0027s hope is that more students might consider LMC as a major if they were made aware of the school\u0027s research and scholarship.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p5\u0022\u003E\u201cHow can admissions officers and advisors recognize someone who would be a good student for our majors if they don\u2019t have a clear picture of what we do?\u201d he asked.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p5\u0022\u003E\u003Cem\u003EHumanistic Perspectives\u003C\/em\u003E is a first step to garnering this understanding, portraying the depth and breadth of research and practice being conducted in the school. Launched at LMC\u2019s 2014 alumni celebration in November, the book is comprised of over 30 essays that address the interplay between humanistic perspectives and technology.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p5\u0022\u003EThe two are inextricably linked and always have been, according to LMC\u2019s Alumni Project Director and Assistant Professor \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.iac.gatech.edu\/faculty-and-staff\/faculty\/bio\/madej\u0022\u003EKrystina Madej\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p5\u0022\u003E\u201cHuman beings have never stopped wanting to tell stories, ever since the beginning of time. When we wrote in hieroglyphics, that wasn\u2019t enough. We wanted to move forward. So we wrote stories in books [and] that wasn\u2019t enough. We always want to share more through the ways that are around us, so the technologies and the narratives are very symbiotic.\u201d\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p5\u0022\u003EAn example entry is \u003Cem\u003EADAM, EarSketch, and I\u003C\/em\u003E by\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.iac.gatech.edu\/faculty-and-staff\/faculty\/bio\/magerko\u0022\u003EBrian Magerko\u003C\/a\u003E, which offers a look at the work done in his Adaptive Digital Media\u0026nbsp;(\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/adam.cc.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EADAM\u003C\/a\u003E) Lab, including \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.news.gatech.edu\/2014\/09\/18\/georgia-tech-awarded-nsf-grant-combine-arts-and-computer-science-georgia-high-schools\u0022\u003EEarSketch\u003C\/a\u003E, a multidisciplinary research project that introduces high school students to programming code through music remixing.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p5\u0022\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.iac.gatech.edu\/faculty-and-staff\/faculty\/bio\/lux\u0022\u003EChristopher Le Dantec\u003C\/a\u003E introduces participatory design in\u003Cem\u003E Designing Community Engagement\u003C\/em\u003E through discussing \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/cycleatlanta.org\/\u0022\u003ECycle Atlanta\u003C\/a\u003E, a smartphone app that collects voluntary data from local cyclists to better inform city planners\u0027 decisions. A former computer engineer, Le Dantec came to realize that \u0022of the many things that are possible with technology, the only possibilities that truly count are those that resonate with human values.\u0022\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p5\u0022\u003EOther entries range the gamut from \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.iac.gatech.edu\/faculty-and-staff\/faculty\/bio\/colatrella\u0022\u003ECarol Colatrella\u003C\/a\u003E discussing how students can benefit from the value and power of storytelling in their professional and everyday lives to \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.iac.gatech.edu\/faculty-and-staff\/faculty\/bio\/lux\u0022\u003EThomas Lux\u003C\/a\u003E exploring his conception of good poems as not written, but \u201cengineered.\u201d\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p5\u0022\u003EJust as Georgia Tech realizes that a humanistic perspective makes for better scientists, engineers, and business people, the fact that the faculty of LMC must continually find meaningful and creative ways to incorporate technology into their teaching makes them better humanists.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p5\u0022\u003E\u201cWe teach so many students from outside of the humanities, so we have to go back to the roots of the humanities \u2014 what does it mean to be a human being?\u201d concluded Utz. \u201cFor those who are at institutions where [the importance of humanities] is established, you don\u2019t have to explain yourself every day. But if I teach students from mechanical engineering, I need to create for them a path to the beauty of the language, the constructedness, and the craft of literature.
