Developing Our Students As Problem-Solvers

Lunch will be provided.

Faculty Speakers:

Lisa Benson

Associate Professor, Bioengineering

Clemson University

Alexandra Coso

Postdoctoral Scholar, CETL

Part-Time Instructor, Aerospace Engineering

Georgia Institute of Technology

When we as educators approach a complex problem, our mind begins to analyze whether we have seen this or a similar problem before. Many of us draw diagrams or create models to better understand the problem and consider different approaches to solving it. We also make assumptions, perform back-of-the-envelope calculations, and can quickly evaluate whether our solution is reasonable.

How do we support students’ development of these skills, especially in courses where they are also attempting to master fundamental knowledge from our discipline?

Join your colleagues as we examine findings from educational research and experiences from practice to discuss approaches for furthering our students’ problem-solving skills. The workshop will provide opportunities for educators to discuss problem-solving from a variety of perspectives and the challenges to supporting student development in this regard in the classroom. In addition, participants will leave with concrete ideas to consider implementing in their own courses.
