{"367411":{"#nid":"367411","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Royster Appointed to Second Term as Dean","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EFollowing a review over recent months, Jacqueline Jones Royster, dean of the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts, has been reappointed for a second term.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe Georgia Tech Faculty Handbook calls for a review of the performance of academic deans after five years of service. This past fall, Provost Rafael Bras appointed a committee to review Royster\u2019s first term. The committee\u0027s report\u0026nbsp;culminated in a hearty affirmation of Royster\u2019s work and her competence in the role of dean.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThe committee commended Dean Royster\u2019s emphasis on equity, fairness, transparency, high academic standards, and open communications,\u201d said Bras. \u201cIt was my pleasure to offer her reappointment, and she has enthusiastically accepted.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ERoyster was lauded for her prioritization of growing Ivan Allen\u2019s reputation both on and off campus, along with other leadership qualities.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThe position calls for an innovative leader capable of not just finding opportunities, but making them,\u201d the report stated. \u201cDean Royster is such a leader.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ERoyster was also commended for articulating the role of the liberal arts at Tech, defining Ivan Allen\u2019s institutional role as \u201cinnovation at the crossroads of humanities, social science, and technology.\u201d Her particular emphasis on civic leadership aligns with Tech\u2019s strategic goals of graduating good global citizens and instilling public service as a priority in graduates. She was also praised for her availability, including her willingness to have individual meetings and timely response to phone calls and emails.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p1\u0022\u003E\u0022The Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts is at a wonderful place in its long history at Georgia Tech, and\u0026nbsp;I am pleased that this second appointment as Dean permits me to continue working with wonderful colleagues \u2014 faculty, staff, fellow administrators\u0026nbsp;across the college and the Institute, students, alumni, partners and friends \u2014 near and far,\u0022 said Royster. \u0022Looking ahead, I remain excited\u0026nbsp;to be\u0026nbsp;connected to\u0026nbsp;the\u0026nbsp;remarkable vision and mission\u0026nbsp;of liberal arts at Tech\u0026nbsp;as we continue to set an ambitious\u0026nbsp;pace for\u0026nbsp;what the liberal arts should be in our 21st century world.\u0022\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ESteven French, dean of the College of Architecture, chaired the committee, with Ivan Allen faculty comprising the rest of the group: Jennifer Clark (School of Public Policy), Kelly Comfort (School of Modern Languages), Carl DiSalvo (School of Literature, Media, and Communication), Byung-Cheol Kim (School of Economics), Steven Usselman (School of History, Technology, and Society), and Katja Weber (Sam Nunn School of International Affairs).\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe committee developed its evaluation with input from various sources, including a self-assessment from Royster, a survey of Ivan Allen faculty and staff, open office hours with Ivan Allen faculty and staff, interviews with Ivan Allen leadership, and a peer evaluation from Tech\u2019s five other academic deans.
