One of Tech’s primary ways of acclimating freshmen to college life is through GT 1000, the first-year seminar. The Center for Academic Enrichment is currently seeking faculty and staff members to teach it for fall 2015.

The one-credit course is designed to help first-year students adjust to college life, learn about their majors and related careers, and introduce them to campus resources. 

For instructors, it provides an opportunity to get a glimpse of campus from the student point of view.

“The most exciting part of teaching was having meaningful exchanges with freshmen, in a small group, and getting to know and understand some of their challenges and concerns,” said Yves Berthelot, vice provost for International Initiatives, who co-taught a section of the course in fall 2014. “I also felt that they were deeply appreciative that I was willing to spend time with them and share some of my experience at Tech.”

Each section has between 15–20 students, and instructors are assisted by three to four upperclassmen known as team leaders. The Center for Academic Enrichment provides the curriculum, resources, and training for teaching the course. 

Instructors should expect to spend at least two to three hours per week on the course — an hour of class and one to two hours of administrative work. Instructors must have at least a bachelor’s degree to be eligible to teach. Those with a master’s degree may teach as the sole instructor; those with a bachelor’s degree will be paired with a co-instructor with a master’s degree, provided the pool of instructors allows for pairings. Instructors do not need to have prior teaching experience or student-oriented jobs on campus.

“We welcome people from any department at Georgia Tech, provided they have been employed at Tech for a year as of this summer and have the support of their department,” said Nirmal Trivedi, director of Academic Transition Programs. 

The deadline to apply is Monday, March 30. A new instructor information session will take place on March 19 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the Clough Lounge (Suite 205, Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons).
