{"382371":{"#nid":"382371","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Two Sciences Faculty Receive 2015 Sloan Research Fellowship","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003ETwo Georgia Tech faculty are among 126 scientists in North America who have been awarded a 2015 \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.sloan.org\/sloan-research-fellowships\/\u0022\u003ESloan Research Fellowship\u003C\/a\u003E, a two-year grant given to early career scholars to support their pursuit of scientific knowledge.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EDanielle Dixson\u003C\/strong\u003E, an assistant professor in the School of Biology, investigates the influence sensory cues have on the behavior of coral reef organisms. Her recent work, featured on the cover of the journal \u003Cem\u003EScience\u003C\/em\u003E, found that \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.news.gatech.edu\/2014\/08\/21\/marine-protected-areas-might-not-be-enough-help-overfished-reefs-recover\u0022\u003Ecoral larvae and juvenile fishes can smell the difference\u003C\/a\u003E between a reef that is unhealthy and one that is a suitable home. She has also published recent work showing that acidic oceans make sharks less interested in their food.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EDixson conducts research missions around the globe to study coral reef ecology, and the Sloan Research Fellowship will allow her to continue conducting fieldwork vital to her research.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cI am very honored and excited to have been selected as a Sloan Fellow,\u201d Dixson said. \u201cThese funds will allow my lab to conduct research in Belize investigating how larval fishes and corals use chemical cues in settlement site selection and predator evasion.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EChris Reinhard\u003C\/strong\u003E, an assistant professor in the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, seeks to understand the ways in which biological metabolism and the chemistry of Earth\u0027s oceans and atmosphere are coupled and shape one another.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EHe is currently working with the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/astrobiology.nasa.gov\/nai\/\u0022\u003ENASA Astrobiology Institute\u003C\/a\u003E, using the lessons learned from reconstructing the history of ocean-atmosphere chemistry to inform the search for life within and beyond our solar system.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThe work I do thrives on collaboration; it is typically interdisciplinary and broad in scope,\u201d Reinhard said. \u201cI\u0027ve been exceptionally fortunate to have the chance to work with and learn from some incredible people in my young career.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAwarded in eight scientific and technical fields \u2014 chemistry, computer science, economics, mathematics, computational and evolutionary molecular biology, neuroscience, ocean sciences, and physics \u2014 candidates are nominated by fellow scientists.
