Several female Georgia Tech faculty members will serve as presenters and mentors at the 2015 Future Faculty Workshop, and representatives from other institutions will also be in attendance. This workshop is partially modeled after previous successful Future Faculty Workshops conducted at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and University of California Santa Barbara, among others, but this event is the first Future Faculty Workshop that is focused on women and work-life balance. A total of 40-45 Georgia Tech graduate students and/or post-docs will be chosen to participate in this special workshop. Please apply as soon as possible. Description:

Daniel Kahneman has noted that “true intuitive expertise is learned from prolonged experience with good feedback on mistakes” (2011).  Regardless of context, feedback is vital for learning.  While faculty play a central role in providing feedback to students about their learning, faculty and students often express frustration with the amount and quality of this feedback.  Analyses of the impact of feedback on student performance have shown that feedback is most effective when it provides students with three kinds of information: how well students achieved the assignment’s outcomes, how well students are progressing towards their goal for the course, and what students should do next in order to meet their goal for the course.

 This workshop will provide faculty with practical tips regarding ways to efficiently provide effective feedback to students, especially on skills that are challenging to assess such as writing, oral communication, and problem-solving.

Our campus was rocked last academic year with several incidents of sexual violence and other evidence of a chilly and inequitable climate.  Many of the items that hit the news and twitter feeds happened outside of the classroom and lab.  However, since Georgia Tech is an academic institution the faculty have a central role to play in creating and facilitating a positive climate.  This day-long program will explore what we do inside and outside of our classrooms and how we teach and mentor undergraduate and graduate students.  Our goal is to collectively find positive actions that we all can take to ensure a healthy teaching and learning environment at Georgia Tech.
