The Social Lives of Facts: Climate Change, Environmental Concern, and Digital Media

TIME AND LOCATION:

Tuesday, April 14
1:30-3:00pm in the Peachtree Room in the Student Center
Welcome reception (open to all) starts at 1:00.

Please RSVP to help us plan

TOPIC:

Climate change and issues related to environment-focused policy offer vital opportunities to investigate how scientific issues and predictions come to matter for wide publics. The work of diverse social groups demonstrate that an issue like climate change is experienced, understood, translated, and discussed differently in varied contexts. This talk will explore what role digital media platforms might play in mediating new and emerging voices, facilitating collaboration, and reconfiguring expertise on issues rooted in environmental concern. This talk will draw on ethnographic work recently published in How Climate Change Comes to Matter (Duke U Press, 2014) as well as research on changing journalistic norms and practices and the role of digital media in multi-vocal, networked social movements.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Candis Callison is an Assistant Professor at University of British Columbia's Graduate School of Journalism where she conducts research on media, social movements, and science and environment issues. Candis received her PhD from MIT’s Program in Science, Technology, and Society, and previously worked in the U.S. and Canada as a journalist and producer in broadcast and online media.

Cosponsored by: Project One and the School of Literature, Media, and Communication
