{"392341":{"#nid":"392341","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Georgia Tech receives U.S. Department of Commerce i6 Challenge Grant","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EThe U.S. Department of Commerce has awarded the Georgia Institute of Technology a $500,000 i6 Challenge grant to support a sweeping innovation and entrepreneurship initiative in Athens, Augusta, and downtown Atlanta.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAs part of the award announcement on March 31, Jay Williams, the assistant secretary of commerce for economic development, visited the Enterprise Innovation Institute (EI\u003Csup\u003E2\u003C\/sup\u003E), Tech\u2019s chief economic development and business outreach unit.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EHe toured and met with several startup companies incubating at the Advanced Technology Development Center, one of EI\u003Csup\u003E2\u003C\/sup\u003E\u2019s economic development programs. Williams also met with Georgia Tech President G.P. \u201cBud\u201d Peterson and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe i6 Challenge is a national competition that seeks to fund small, but targeted high-impact initiatives that support startup creation, innovation, and commercialization.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe award, which Georgia Tech is matching with an additional $517,787, will be used to provide education, support, and programs to develop the entrepreneurial community in Georgia in the three communities.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIt will be administered through EI\u003Csup\u003E2\u003C\/sup\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ESpecifically, the award will:\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003EFurther the development of startup ecosystems in Athens and Augusta, both located in economically distressed counties.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EServe as a catalyst for the growth of two university-anchored startup ecosystems in downtown Atlanta.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cWhat\u2019s exciting about this grant is that it really is about partnerships \u2014 the cross-community and multi-university partnerships we have in Atlanta, Athens, and Augusta,\u201d EI\u003Csup\u003E2\u003C\/sup\u003E\u0026nbsp;Vice President Stephen Fleming said.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIn Augusta, Tech will be working with the Clubhou.se, a technology-oriented, non-profit business and community incubator. In Athens, Tech has partnered with Four Athens, that community\u2019s technology incubator.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIn Atlanta, Tech is collaborating with Georgia State and Clark Atlanta universities, Morehouse College, the Morehouse School of Medicine, and Spelman College to develop entrepreneurship programs that support their unique visions.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ELucror Resources, an Atlanta-based developer, is partnering with Tech in the development of an entrepreneurial hub in downtown Atlanta\u2019s Flatiron building that will include the city\u2019s Women\u2019s Entrepreneur Initiative.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EBy P\u00e9ralte C.
