417441 news 1435071902 1475896725 <![CDATA[In Memoriam – Former AE Professor Robert Roper]]> Dr. Robert Roper passed away on February 28, 2012, from kidney cancer that was diagnosed only weeks before his passing.  Prof. Roper was a faculty member in AE for many years following his arrival from Australia in the late-1960's.  He along with Howard Edwards and Jere Justus did groundbreaking studies and modeling of the upper atmosphere using photogrammetry of gas releases from sounding rockets and Doppler radio reflection measurements from ionized meteor trails.  Their work contributed extensively to the atmospheric models so critical to successful reentry for manned spaceflight up to and including the Shuttle. 

Prof. Roper transferred to, and later retired from Georgia Tech’s School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences.  But, he retained a strong interest in the AE School participating in a group of AE retirees who meet monthly for lunch and friendship.
