418291 news 1435153160 1475896729 <![CDATA[Georgia Tech Teams Excel in AHS International Helicopter Design Competition]]> Graduate and Undergraduate design teams did exceptionally well in the 2012 American Helicopter Society's design competition.  The Georgia Tech/University of Liverpool graduate team's coaxial helicopter with a counter-rotating auxiliary propeller system titled "Advanced Racing Concept (ARC)" took second place in their category.  The Georgia Tech/Middle East Technical University undergraduate team's "Badger", a single-pilot, highly maneuverable, intermeshing rotorcraft system took first place!  Prof. Dan Schrage served as the faculty advisor for both teams.

Prof. Schrage's teams have won first or second place every year since he arrived on our campus.  AE's undergraduate teams likewise have won first or second place every year since 2007 when the capstone design sequence in helicopter design was created.

The AHS Student Design Competition challenges students to design a vertical lift aircraft meeting specified requirements and provides a practical exercise for engineering students at accredited colleges and universities around the world.  The competition promotes student interest in vertical flight technology.  Each of the first- and second- place winning teams are invited to the AHS Annual Forum and Technology Display to present detailed proposals.
