Graphical results from NSF Grant 0731034 entitled \u0022Advances in Wind Turbine Analysis and Design for Sustainable Energy\u0022 are on display at the NSF Headquarters.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EProf. Marilyn Smith of AE led the project\u0027s research development with co-principal investigator Dr. Christopher P. Stone, GT 2003, of Computational Science \u0026amp; Engineering, LLC and doctoral student C. Eric Lynch, GT (PhD) 2011.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe graphic provides an example of the vorticity field about the Unsteady Aerodynamics Experience (UAE) Phase-VI wind turbine rotor using their modified version of NASA\u0027s OVERFLOW code.\u0026nbsp; Iso-surfaces of vorticity-magnitude are colored with velocity magnitude.\u0026nbsp; The results shown illustrate the impact of improved turbulence modeling via a detached eddy simulation on unsteady flows.\u0026nbsp; Their progress in advancing the state of the art in modeling\u0026nbsp; and simulation of wind turbines has also been highlighted in a public speech given by the NSF director.\u0026nbsp; The algorithm advancements from this effort have been incorporated and are now available in NASA\u0027s FUN3D unstructured CFD solver.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EProf. Smith is currently partnered with Dr. Glen Whitehouse of Continuum Dynamics Inc. to extend this research to wind farm and long-age wake analysis through an award by the Department of Energy.\u003C\/p\u003E","summary":null,"format":"limited_html"}],"field_subtitle":"","field_summary":"","field_summary_sentence":[{"value":"GTAE\u0027s contribution to sustainable energy research at  the National Science Foundation (NSF)"}],"uid":"27456","created_gmt":"2015-06-30 13:19:58","changed_gmt":"2016-10-08 03:18:52","author":"Britanny Grace","boilerplate_text":"","field_publication":"","field_article_url":"","dateline":{"date":"2013-01-23T00:00:00-05:00","iso_date":"2013-01-23T00:00:00-05:00","tz":"America\/New_York"},"extras":[],"groups":[{"id":"1239","name":"School of Aerospace Engineering"}],"categories":[{"id":"136","name":"Aerospace"},{"id":"134","name":"Student and Faculty"}],"keywords":[{"id":"2082","name":"aerospace engineering"},{"id":"130931","name":"Christopher P.
