Phytoplankton growing in the open ocean surface account for approximately half of all annual carbon fixation. Therefore, we need a robust accounting of the drivers of phytoplankton growth and mortality, particularly their responses to changing environmental regimes, in order to model the Earth’s carbon cycle. The new flood of insights molecular technologies have provided into marine microbial adaptations to the hostile and nutrient-bereft open ocean surface calls for a fresh look at the role of dynamical ecosystem models in microbial oceanography. Here we will cover a few vignettes exploring (1) the response of the entire microbial ecosystem to the day/night cycle, linking physiological changes to bulk ecosystem properties, (2) the coevolutionary dynamics between a phytoplankton host and its virus under nutrient limiting conditions, adding theory to the proposed ‘Ferrojan Horse Hypothesis’, and (3) preliminary progress on fledgling work seeking to understand the role of viral infection in organic particle formation and export.

The seminar will be hosted at this bluejeans link.

  <status>1</status> <created>1614812509</created> <gmt_created>2021-03-03 23:01:49</gmt_created> <changed>1614812509</changed> <gmt_changed>2021-03-03 23:01:49</gmt_changed> <promote>0</promote> <sticky>0</sticky> <teaser>QBioS Seminar Series - Limited efforts have been made to quantify the combined effects of these gene regulatory events globally. Here we aim to understand genome-wide gene expression control and to evaluate if RNA level is a good proxy to predict protein abundance in model organisms. I first analyzed the correlation of mRNA and protein abundance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA). Our PA data suggest that mRNA abundance alone cannot precisely predict protein abundance (~60%). I also measured mRNA and protein expression profiles in Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa) using RNA-seq and mass spectrometry approaches, and will integrate with their half-life dynamics for thousands of genes (work in progress). These studies provide a quantitative analysis of the cellular abundance and turnover dynamics of mRNA and protein and help us understand the underlying principles of gene expression control.

The seminar will be hosted at this bluejeans link.

  <status>1</status> <created>1614126616</created> <gmt_created>2021-02-24 00:30:16</gmt_created> <changed>1614126616</changed> <gmt_changed>2021-02-24 00:30:16</gmt_changed> <promote>0</promote> <sticky>0</sticky> <teaser>QBioS Student Seminar Series - In particular, the nematode worm C. elegans lives in environments (e.g., rotting fruit) where maneuverability is crucial to overcome heterogeneities and post-interaction deformations. To search for steering control principles in undulatory locomotion, we studied C. elegans traversing both agar, liquid buffer, and lattices. These worms generate a time-dependent omega-like shape for reorientation to achieve high body rotation independent of the environment. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed the worms use four principal components during turning, superimposing two body traveling waves with two spatial frequencies. A geometric mechanics framework rationalized the observed turning dynamics by properly coupling the amplitude and the phase of the two body traveling waves. These results and robophysical experiments, implementing the behavior, suggest that omega turns are a robust strategy for turning in diverse environments.

The seminar will be hosted at this bluejeans link.

  <status>1</status>  <created>1613401529</created>  <gmt_created>2021-02-15 15:05:29</gmt_created>  <changed>1613401529</changed>  <gmt_changed>2021-02-15 15:05:29</gmt_changed>  <promote>0</promote>  <sticky>0</sticky>  <teaser>QBioS Student Seminar Series - Kelimar Diaz</teaser>  <type>event</type>  <sentence>QBioS Student Seminar Series - Kelimar Diaz</sentence>

QBioS 4th year student Kelimar Diaz (homeschool of physics), advised by Daniel Goldman, will present "Maneuvering strategies of C. elegans locomotion in heterogeneous environments"

  <start>2021-02-18T16:00:00-05:00</start>  <end>2021-02-18T17:00:00-05:00</end>  <end_last>2021-02-18T17:00:00-05:00</end_last>  <gmt_start>2021-02-18 21:00:00</gmt_start>  <gmt_end>2021-02-18 22:00:00</gmt_end>  <gmt_end_last>2021-02-18 22:00:00</gmt_end_last>  <times>
      <value>2021-02-18T16:00:00-05:00</value>      <value2>2021-02-18T17:00:00-05:00</value2>      <rrule>  </rrule>      <timezone>America/New_York</timezone>      <timezone_db>America/New_York</timezone_db>      <date_type>datetime</date_type>
  </times>  <gmt_times>
      <value>2021-02-18 04:00:00</value>      <value2>2021-02-18 05:00:00</value2>      <rrule>  </rrule>      <timezone>America/New_York</timezone>      <timezone_db>America/New_York</timezone_db>      <date_type>datetime</date_type>
  </gmt_times>  <phone></phone>
https://bluejeans.com/558060212
  <location_url>
https://bluejeans.com/558060212

Bluejeans
  </location_url>

  <contact>
Bluejeans link for the seminar is available here.

Contact Daniel Muratore (here) for questions.
</contact>  <fee></fee>  <extras>      </extras>  <location></location>  <media>
644230
      </media>  <hg_media>
          <nid>644230</nid>          <type>image</type>
02_18_qbios_seminar_flyer

                      <image_name>02_18_announcement.png</image_name>            <image_path>/sites/default/files/images/02_18_announcement.png</image_path>            <image_full_path>http://www.tlwarc.hg.gatech.edu//sites/default/files/images/02_18_announcement.png</image_full_path>            <image_740>http://www.tlwarc.hg.gatech.edu/sites/default/files/styles/740xx_scale/public/sites/default/files/images/02_18_announcement.png?itok=4JhgVIGN</image_740>            <image_mime>image/png</image_mime>            <image_alt></image_alt>                              <created>1613400777</created>          <gmt_created>2021-02-15 14:52:57</gmt_created>          <changed>1613400777</changed>          <gmt_changed>2021-02-15 14:52:57</gmt_changed>
      </hg_media>  <boilerplate></boilerplate>  <boilerplate_text></boilerplate_text>  <sidebar></sidebar>  <related>      </related>  <files>      </files>  <groups>          <group id="562111">QBioS</group>      </groups>  <categories>
Seminar/Lecture/Colloquium
      </categories>  <event_terms>          <term tid="1795">Seminar/Lecture/Colloquium</term>      </event_terms>  <event_audience>          <term tid="78761">Faculty/Staff</term>          <term tid="177814">Postdoc</term>          <term tid="78771">Public</term>          <term tid="174045">Graduate students</term>          <term tid="78751">Undergraduate students</term>      </event_audience>  <keywords>          <keyword tid="138191">go-qbios</keyword>          <keyword tid="147941">go_qbios</keyword>          <keyword tid="168667">QBioS</keyword>          <keyword tid="182721">Qbios seminar</keyword>      </keywords>  <userdata>        </userdata></node><node id="643845">
QBioS Student Seminar Series - Guanlin Li
  <uid>35673</uid>

Optimizing use of multiphage ‘cocktails’ for treatment of immunodeficient hosts: a model-based control approach

The addition of therapeutic phage to treat Multi-Drug Resistant (MDR) pathogens imposes a strong selective pressure for the emergence of phage-resistant bacteria. Modeling and in vivo experiments have established that phage-resistant bacteria proliferate in Myd88-/- (immunodeficient) mice, corresponding to a failure of phage therapy. This work aims to develop evolutionarily robust phage therapy in immunodeficient hosts. First, we consider a model where bacteria evolve in an abstract discrete phenotypic space against different types of phages present in a therapeutic phage library. Second, we formulate a single-dose optimization problem subject to the proposed eco-evolutionary dynamics. The goal is to minimize the total bacterial population while penalizing the treatment costs by optimizing the phage therapy administrations. Finally, we extend single-dose treatment to multi-dose treatment and find the optimal policy via control theory.

This seminar will be hosted at this bluejeans link.

  <status>1</status>  <created>1612383188</created>  <gmt_created>2021-02-03 20:13:08</gmt_created>  <changed>1612404471</changed>  <gmt_changed>2021-02-04 02:07:51</gmt_changed>  <promote>0</promote>  <sticky>0</sticky>  <teaser>QBioS Seminar Series - Guanlin Li</teaser>  <type>event</type>  <sentence>QBioS Seminar Series - Guanlin Li</sentence>

QBioS 4th year student Guanlin Li (homeschool of physics), advised by Joshua Weitz, will present "Optimizing use of multiphage ‘cocktails’ for treatment of immunodeficient hosts: a model-based control approach"

  <start>2021-02-11T16:00:00-05:00</start>  <end>2021-02-11T17:00:00-05:00</end>  <end_last>2021-02-11T17:00:00-05:00</end_last>  <gmt_start>2021-02-11 21:00:00</gmt_start>  <gmt_end>2021-02-11 22:00:00</gmt_end>  <gmt_end_last>2021-02-11 22:00:00</gmt_end_last>  <times>
      <value>2021-02-11T16:00:00-05:00</value>      <value2>2021-02-11T17:00:00-05:00</value2>      <rrule>  </rrule>      <timezone>America/New_York</timezone>      <timezone_db>America/New_York</timezone_db>      <date_type>datetime</date_type>
  </times>  <gmt_times>
      <value>2021-02-11 04:00:00</value>      <value2>2021-02-11 05:00:00</value2>      <rrule>  </rrule>      <timezone>America/New_York</timezone>      <timezone_db>America/New_York</timezone_db>      <date_type>datetime</date_type>
  </gmt_times>  <phone></phone>
https://bluejeans.com/558060212
  <location_url>
https://bluejeans.com/558060212

Bluejeans
  </location_url>

  <contact>
Bluejeans link for the seminar is available here.

Contact Daniel Muratore (here) for questions.
</contact>  <fee></fee>  <extras>      </extras>  <location></location>  <media>
643828
      </media>  <hg_media>
          <nid>643828</nid>          <type>image</type>
qbios_seminar_02_11_2021_flyer

                      <image_name>guanlin_poster.png</image_name>            <image_path>/sites/default/files/images/guanlin_poster.png</image_path>            <image_full_path>http://www.tlwarc.hg.gatech.edu//sites/default/files/images/guanlin_poster.png</image_full_path>            <image_740>http://www.tlwarc.hg.gatech.edu/sites/default/files/styles/740xx_scale/public/sites/default/files/images/guanlin_poster.png?itok=nOcc9HkI</image_740>            <image_mime>image/png</image_mime>            <image_alt></image_alt>                              <created>1612377519</created>          <gmt_created>2021-02-03 18:38:39</gmt_created>          <changed>1612377519</changed>          <gmt_changed>2021-02-03 18:38:39</gmt_changed>
      </hg_media>  <boilerplate></boilerplate>  <boilerplate_text></boilerplate_text>  <sidebar></sidebar>  <related>      </related>  <files>      </files>  <groups>          <group id="562111">QBioS</group>      </groups>  <categories>
Seminar/Lecture/Colloquium
      </categories>  <event_terms>          <term tid="1795">Seminar/Lecture/Colloquium</term>      </event_terms>  <event_audience>          <term tid="78761">Faculty/Staff</term>          <term tid="177814">Postdoc</term>          <term tid="78771">Public</term>          <term tid="174045">Graduate students</term>          <term tid="78751">Undergraduate students</term>      </event_audience>  <keywords>          <keyword tid="138191">go-qbios</keyword>          <keyword tid="147941">go_qbios</keyword>          <keyword tid="168667">QBioS</keyword>          <keyword tid="182721">Qbios seminar</keyword>      </keywords>  <userdata>        </userdata></node><node id="633352">
QBioS Seminar Series - Stephen Thomas
  <uid>35013</uid>

Interactions between multiple quorum sensing systems in Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Many bacterial species have multiple quorum sensing systems.
