Casting Call for Petit Scholar Mentors

Steven Spielberg, who has made some of the most highly acclaimed movies of the past 40 years, once said, “The delicate balance of mentoring someone is not creating them in your own image, but giving them the opportunity to create themselves.”

If you are a graduate student or post-doctoral fellow in the Petit Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience, here is your chance to follow the advice of an Academy Award winning film director.

“The Petit Undergraduate Research Scholars program is looking for mentors right now to help foster the next wave of creative undergrads,” says Colly Mitchell, program administrator. “This is a chance for our talented grad students and postdocs to gain some valuable mentoring and project management experience while also furthering their own research interests.”

Mentors also receive $2,000 for travel to scientific conferences or materials and supplies for the lab. The mentor experience provides for a strong CV builder since most employers prefer Ph.D.’s with project management experience. Plus, Petit Scholar mentors have an opportunity to help guide the world-class researchers of the very near future.

And this year, because of specific funding support for the 2016 class of Petit Scholars, special consideration will be given to projects with a focus on bioinformatics, immunoengineering, neuroengineering, and pediatrics (this includes robotics, data analytics, interoperability, process improvement, nano-medicine, sensor and device development).

But time is of the essence: After checking with your advisor to see if mentoring an undergrad is a good fit for your lab, you must submit a project proposal by August 10 (and keep in mind, only projects allowing undergrads to work independently will be considered).

Mentors must be available to work with scholars throughout the calendar year, from January 2016 through December 2016.

For more information on how to a play a major role in the epic academic career of a future great researcher (and take direction from Steven Spielberg), visit the Petit Scholar mentor site (http://petitinstitute.gatech.edu/become-petit-mentor).

CONTACT:

Jerry Grillo
Communications Officer II
Parker H.
