  <title><![CDATA[What Our First-Year Students Tell Us about Themselves]]></title>
  <body><![CDATA[<p>At FASET each summer, our incoming students complete an Institute survey. The Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) allows us to learn about our freshmen. Last summer here’s what our first-year student told us about themselves:</p><ul><li>96% had an A average grade in high school</li><li>76% graduated from a public high school</li><li>Nearly half (48%) said that Georgia Tech was their 1<sup>st</sup> choice</li><li>47% intend to earn a Master’s; 27% a Ph.D.</li><li>The vast majority (85%) frequently/occasionally felt overwhelmed by all they had to do</li><li>43% frequently/occasionally felt depressed</li><li>Nearly half (48%) frequently/occasionally fell asleep in class</li><li>47% of their Fathers; 36% of their Mothers earned Graduate degrees</li><li>In deciding to go to college, almost all (99%) said it was very important/somewhat important to get a better job</li><li>When compared to peers their own age</li><ul><li>95% rated themselves at being in the highest 10%/above average with respect to <em>academic ability</em></li><li>74% rated themselves at being in the highest 10%/above average with respect to <em>self-confidence (intellectual); 39% </em>in <em>self-confidence (social)</em></li><li>Less than half (42%) rated themselves at being in the highest 10%/above average with respect to their <em>public speaking ability</em></li></ul><li>Less than half (49%) said their ability to manage their time was a major strength/somewhat strong</li><li>Very important/somewhat important reasons to them in deciding to come to Georgia Tech</li><ul><li>63% parents</li><li>100% GT’s very good academic reputation</li><li>72% the cost of attending GT</li><li>34% wanted to live near home</li><li>83% GT’s graduates gain admission to top graduate/professional schools</li><li>98% GT’s graduates get good jobs</li><li>86% GT’s rankings in national magazines</li></ul></ul>]]></body>
