By the end of 2019, the couple will each earn a graduate degree from Georgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s online Master of Science in Computer Science (OMSCS) program.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe crazy thing is, this isn\u0026rsquo;t the first time the Montgomery\u0026rsquo;s have accomplished the same feat together. Married for 16 years and together for nearly 20, the Montgomery\u0026rsquo;s met in high school Spanish class. Upon graduation they attended Illinois State University, both earning degrees in computer information systems.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBachelor\u0026rsquo;s degrees in hand, the Montgomery\u0026rsquo;s started their careers at State Farm where they have worked for over a decade. The couple started in the same role, but have since pursued different paths within the company. Malikah now works as a software developer and Victor is an IT manager.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESince their days in Illinois, Malikah had dreamed of earning an advanced degree but couldn\u0026rsquo;t find the right program for their lifestyle and budget. Around the same time, they began traveling around the southeastern U.S. recruiting candidates for State Farm. As they traveled, they began meeting Georgia Tech students and graduates and soon noticed that they were a caliber above the rest of the applicants.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;The more we talked to candidates, the more we realized how much we were drawn to and impressed with Georgia Tech graduates. When we realized we had an opportunity to become Georgia Tech graduates ourselves without having to leave our jobs or break the bank, we were immediately interested,\u0026rdquo; said Malikah.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EEven though they are now Atlanta residents, the Montgomery\u0026rsquo;s chose to pursue their master\u0026rsquo;s via the online route. With two kids and one on the way, the OMSCS program seemed like a perfect fit. It offered much needed flexibility for their schedules while also making their goals completely affordable.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBoth Malikah and Victor feel that participating in the program has been an incredible decision for them personally, for their family, and for their careers.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;With an almost ten-year gap since I\u0026rsquo;ve done hardcore programming, OMSCS has helped me prove to myself that I\u0026rsquo;ve still got those skills. Technology has changed so much since we earned our undergraduate degrees, but I\u0026rsquo;ve just got to remind myself to be patient and allow myself to fail. The pursuit is not easy, but it is rewarding,\u0026rdquo; Victor said of his experience.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EMalikah added, \u0026ldquo;The expectation is not for you to know how to do something, but to become a thought leader in a particular space and to advance that space.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThis new way of thinking really hit home what it meant to earn a master\u0026rsquo;s degree from Georgia Tech. I started to understand that it\u0026rsquo;s okay not to have the right answer immediately and that they try to get you to a place of learning and thinking that is different and helps you grow as a student, as a professional and as a person.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWith working full-time jobs, raising a family and school, keeping it all together can be tiresome. But the Montgomery\u0026rsquo;s have maintained a healthy amount of competition to keep themselves motivated.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;I want her to succeed and get an A in every class. I just want her to get the 94 and I get the 95!\u0026rdquo; said Victor with a laugh.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBesides the grades and the career advancement from pursuing OMSCS degrees, the best motivation for the Montgomerys is ultimately their children.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;It\u0026rsquo;s been cool to be a student at the same time as our children. We have a healthy amount of pressure on them to perform well academically, but I think it\u0026rsquo;s good for them to see Mom and Dad studying and for them to ask how my test went,\u0026rdquo; said Malikah.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026quot;Hopefully by seeing us put in the work for our degrees, they\u0026rsquo;re also being motivated to pursue their own studies and see that we understand what they\u0026rsquo;re going through at school too. It\u0026rsquo;s given us a unique bond that other families may not have,\u0026rdquo; she added.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThere is a possibility that Victor and Malikah will graduate together. Victor says that picturing he and his wife walking across the stage together with their kids in the audience brings him to tears every time. It\u0026rsquo;s a moment that drives them forward and that they hope they can create and cherish A College scholarship enabled many students to attend, from those just starting their academic careers to those looking for what comes after. First-year student \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/salina-nihalani\/\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ESalina Nihalani\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E took advantage of the technical panels to help her focus her studies.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;I would definitely recommend attending as a freshman because sometimes you aren\u0026rsquo;t sure about what you want to study, and it\u0026rsquo;s a great way to gain exposure to research areas you may not know,\u0026rdquo; she said, taking a particular interest in artificial intelligence thanks to the conference.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFourth-year \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/dina-kozlov-4ba56abb\/\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EDina Kozlov\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E is graduating this semester and was looking for jobs at GH, where she found a lot of opportunity without the downsides of competition.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Everyone is so nice that it doesn\u0026rsquo;t feel like a competitive, aggressive space,\u0026rdquo; It took a lot of effort on both her and her mom\u0026rsquo;s part to make her time in high school a success.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EEach day, Gonzales woke up at 4:30 a.m. so that her mom could take her to school in time to make it to work early in the morning. She made it to the high school about an hour and a half early every day and then, after school, went straight to her job at a t-shirt printing shop. There, Gonzales worked evenings to earn money to help supplement her family\u0026rsquo;s income, a practice she continued when she attended the University of California, Irvine. She paid her own student loans and sent money home to help her family make ends meet.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESchool, she said, was like an obstacle.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;As much as I loved it, it was limiting,\u0026rdquo; she said. \u0026ldquo;I didn\u0026rsquo;t have a computer. It became a restriction. There was no way for me to catch up because I was already so far behind on access.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EGonzales\u0026rsquo; story can be told by millions of other Americans. For most, that\u0026rsquo;s where the story ends \u0026ndash; an educational deficit never closed because of a lack of access and resources. For her, though, that experience has served as inspiration for her research into the benefits and pitfalls of online educational environments. Gonzales believes that online learning has potential to reach students who, like herself, had limited access to one of the fundamental components of education: time. Online learning has opened up opportunities for students to learn asynchronously from one another, allowing them to participate in courses as their schedules allow for it.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDegrees like the Georgia Tech \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/omscs.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EOnline Master of Science in Computer Science\u003C\/a\u003E (OMSCS) program, which has made enormous breakthroughs and turned online learning on its head, aim to broaden access to these types of students. Many in Gonzales\u0026rsquo; position are unable to achieve similar results in traditional education. In theory, by making quality education available online, online learning could provide the same opportunity to those underserved communities.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBut what are the properties of a flourishing online classroom? Why do they work? Who do they work for? And, ultimately, how can the academic community design environments that provide access to quality higher education for all?\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EMarissa, meet Jill\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/h3\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EGonzales came to Georgia Tech in 2016 to pursue her Ph.D. after graduating from Irvine with a degree in informatics, concentrating on human-computer interaction.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWhen she arrived, she approached Professor \u003Cstrong\u003EAshok Goel\u003C\/strong\u003E, who had just achieved \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.chronicle.com\/article\/When-the-Teaching-Assistant-Is\/238114\u0022\u003Einternational attention for Jill Watson\u003C\/a\u003E, an artificially intelligent teaching assistant that answered students\u0026rsquo; questions in the online section of his Knowledge-Based AI class.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;I literally just took (Goel) aside and said, \u0026lsquo;Look, I\u0026rsquo;m interested in your work,\u0026rsquo;\u0026rdquo; Gonzales said. \u0026ldquo;\u0026lsquo;I really like this concept going with the virtual TA, and I\u0026rsquo;d like to help.\u0026rsquo;\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EInitially, she saw the opportunity as one to evaluate the system. How did it affect the students? Was it helping them become more engaged or helping overall grades? As she began to dig in to the project, though, she realized that there was an opportunity and a need for more.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;When we learn, there\u0026rsquo;s a lot of factors that affect how we learn or affect our feeling about learning, about the classroom, the teacher, the material,\u0026rdquo; Gonzales explained. \u0026ldquo;How much do we value the experience and how much does that value impact our overall performance? Do we feel like we\u0026rsquo;re getting something out of it? Are we learning to use specific strategies for academic improvement and reflecting on our performance?\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;These are all things that go on in residential classrooms. What about online classrooms, where the sense of a learning community is perhaps obscured, and where students aren\u0026rsquo;t just working with the teaching staff, but with intelligent agents?\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EUnderstanding Design Implications for Online Systems\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/h3\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAs she dug, Gonzales concluded that she needed to evaluate more than just how AIs could ease the load on teaching staff, making them more available to provide additional in-depth assistance to students online. Instead, she needed to take a more holistic view about the students\u0026rsquo; online experience.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESince she began, Gonzales has performed evaluations after each semester for both the residential and online sections of the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.omscs.gatech.edu\/cs-7637-knowledge-based-artificial-intelligence-cognitive-systems\u0022\u003EKnowledge-Based AI class\u003C\/a\u003E in which Jill Watson and other AIs are used.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe goal is to gain a more complete understanding of the online educational experience and how the design and implementation of these AI assistants, among other design decisions in online learning environments, can help or hurt the process of offering quality education online. Online learning, Gonzales said, isn\u0026rsquo;t going anywhere anytime soon. As OMSCS has shown, a quality education can be achieved beyond just a residential program. But it is important that researchers get in front of potential future challenges as online opportunities become more common.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;We have to get in front of it and understand what works and what doesn\u0026rsquo;t work before the demand becomes too great to keep up,\u0026rdquo; she said. \u0026ldquo;Ultimately, online learning should broaden access to more populations, but it\u0026rsquo;s important that we design and implement programs that provide a complete educational experience.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn her two years at Georgia Tech, Gonzales has been \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.ic.gatech.edu\/news\/591828\/ic-phd-student-marissa-gonzales-receives-goizueta-foundation-fellowship\u0022\u003Eawarded the Goizueta Foundation Fellowship\u003C\/a\u003E, which is designed to help attract and promote doctoral students of Hispanic\/Latino origin, and the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.ic.gatech.edu\/news\/601381\/georgia-tech-focus-intel-diversity-fellowship-helping-ics-marissa-gonzales-study-online\u0022\u003EIntel Diversity Fellowship\u003C\/a\u003E from the Georgia Tech Focus Program.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EShe aims to pick her dissertation topic in the next few months and is on track to complete her degree in In celebration of the Georgia Tech College of Computing\u0026rsquo;s role at the forefront of this booming field, the College took the lead in sending, for the first time, students on scholarship to attend the conference, as well as hosting a celebration for online Master of Science in Computer Science (OMSCS) students from the Chicago-area.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHeld in Chicago from March 23-24, WiCyS drew some 4,000 attendees and more than 50 sponsors--both corporate and academic--including the College of Computing. The four student scholar representatives sent by the College were Tina Fatouros (OMSCS), Jenna McGrath (Ph.D. Public Policy), Stacey Truex (Ph.D. Computer Science), and Chenzi Wang (OMSCS). Attendees had the opportunity to enjoy meals and network with other women in the field of cybersecurity, attend technical and career-focused talks like \u0026ldquo;Practical Network Forensics,\u0026rdquo; \u0026ldquo;Teaching Cyber Ethics and Societal Impacts in Introduction Computing Courses,\u0026rdquo; and \u0026ldquo;Watson for Cybersecurity and IBM\u0026rsquo;s Cyber Range,\u0026rdquo; and also take advantage of the conference\u0026rsquo;s Career Fair, at which the College hosted a recruitment booth.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Overall, it was a great conference and definitely worth the time to attend,\u0026rdquo; said Fatouros, who works in security and compliance for AT\u0026amp;T. \u0026ldquo;There was a good mix of students, professionals, and teaching faculty attending, which provided many opportunities to interact and network. I was able to pick up job-relevant information from all of the sessions, including workshops, distinguished speakers, and lightning talks. I work in cybersecurity and left WiCyS more focused and encouraged about the many challenging, rewarding, and attainable opportunities in my field.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWhile in Chicago, the College of Computing and Wenke Lee, co-executive director of the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/cyber.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EInstitute for Information Security \u0026amp; Privacy (IISP)\u003C\/a\u003E, hosted a celebration for local OMSCS students and College alumni. The event was held at the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel, and the 35 attendees enjoyed an evening of celebration with their fellow students -- many of whom met in person for the first time. The awarded recognizes U.S. institutions that have demonstrated a proven commitment to recruiting and retaining students from underrepresented groups in undergraduate computing programs.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAwarded by the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cmd-it.org\/\u0022\u003ECenter for Minorities and People with Disabilities in IT\u003C\/a\u003E (CMD-IT), the honor was accepted on behalf of the College by Executive Associate Dean Charles Isbell, Assistant Dean Cedric Stallworth, and Director of Computing Enrollment Jennifer Whitlow, however it recognized the work of many more Georgia Tech faculty and staff\u0026mdash;several of whom also had official roles to play at Tapia.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EProfessor Mark Guzdial and Research Scientist Barb Ericson, for example, helped build several of the programs that helped Georgia Tech win the award, such as the College\u0026rsquo;s undergraduate program in computational media and the Georgia Computes! initiative to bring CS education into more of Georgia\u0026rsquo;s K-12 schools. Students from the online section rated the pace and rigor of the online course approximately the same as other CS 1301 students rated their on-campus versions while giving the online section an overall \u003Cem\u003Ehigher\u003C\/em\u003E score for course quality.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFollowing the success of the spring semester pilot, an online CS 1301 section will be offered in Fall 2017 to all interested Georgia Tech undergraduates.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe Fall 2017 online CS 1301 section will include:\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cul\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EMore complete, authentic testing suites\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EEmbedded, enhanced personalized feedback and tutoring on exercises\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EIntegrated code visualizations and style feedback\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003EArtificial intelligence to answer student questions in discussion forums \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\u003C\/ul\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe online students will also receive a new programming language translation guide, optional advanced material and concepts, and embedded off-site supplementary material.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;In the first semester, the online version appears to have had comparable learning gains to the traditional version despite requiring less teaching assistant time, providing more flexibility to students, and supporting greater scalability, all while creating a positive student experience,\u0026rdquo; said Joyner, who also teaches multiple courses in Georgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.omscs.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003Eonline M.S. in Computer Science (OMS CS) program\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EOnline students were more likely to be certain in their knowledge, and they also reported significantly less time spent on coursework per week while attaining similar results in knowledge delivery (measured via pre- and post-course testing).\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Since this online CS 1301 course was the first of its kind, I wasn\u0026#39;t exactly sure what to expect,\u0026rdquo; said Ben Wellington, a Georgia Tech undergraduate who completed the online CS 1301 course. \u0026ldquo;But the class was designed and executed nearly perfectly. Learning online was both effective and fun, and this was mostly because of the obvious effort that had been put into the creation of the lecture videos. It was intuitive to complete lessons, assignments, and tests, and the fact that you could learn at your own pace made the course superior to on-campus versions. This course made me go from disliking computer science to adding it as a minor.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;We work hard to provide our students with the best learning experience. Athletic achievements can elevate a university\u0026rsquo;s profile to prospective students, and student-athletes\u0026rsquo; relationship to the university is one that can be used as a model for the broader campus community.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Anyone interested in higher education and how it has to grow and change has to understand how Division I athletics works at a university,\u0026rdquo; he said. \u0026ldquo;As higher education changes, we have to think of ourselves more as a community and consider what lets people build connections and keep coming back. It\u0026rsquo;s going to have to happen with all students, faculty, and staff, and athletics can be an example of how to do that well.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWhile Isbell is a fan and frequent attendee of Georgia Tech athletic events, his support for student-athletes extends beyond the stands.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;I want the student-athletes to know I am here for them, and I intend to talk with them and be a resource for them,\u0026rdquo; he said. \u0026ldquo;I want them to know that and believe it, and know that I take it very seriously.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIsbell\u0026rsquo;s research focuses on statistical machine learning and interactive artificial intelligence. He teaches several courses both to on-campus students and to students around the world in Tech\u0026rsquo;s Online Master of Science in Computer Science program. Many company representatives attending the conference were also enrolled in OMS CS, as were other attendees traveling to Grace Hopper on their own.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;The first day of the conference was a little overwhelming,\u0026rdquo; said Erin Paciorkowski, a Grace Hopper Scholar who was awarded a scholarship from conference organizers. \u0026ldquo;Since then it\u0026rsquo;s been a lot of fun. It\u0026rsquo;s great to meet some of the other women in the OMS CS program. As a group of scholars, they\u0026rsquo;re great to know and hang around with, sharing Uber rides.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EJust as in past years, the College of Computing was an academic gold sponsor of Grace Hopper, bringing not only the group of 19 OMS students but also a contingent of on-campus undergraduate and graduate students. This year, Senior Associate Dean Charles Isbell\u0026mdash;instructor of two OMS CS courses\u0026mdash;also made the trip.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;It\u0026rsquo;s important not just to generally be in support of promoting diversity in computing\u0026mdash;who wouldn\u0026rsquo;t be in favor of that?\u0026mdash;but to provide \u003Cem\u003Evisible\u003C\/em\u003E support,\u0026rdquo; Isbell said. \u0026ldquo;That\u0026rsquo;s why the College of Computing has been a proponent and sponsor of things like Grace Hopper, the Richard Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing, and the NCWIT Pacesetters program. Computing as a field, and certainly we as a College, benefits tremendously from having as diverse a community as possible. We\u0026rsquo;ve made great progress. There\u0026rsquo;s still a lot of work to do.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn addition to taking in Grace Hopper\u0026rsquo;s technical and career development sessions, several students also made time to visit Georgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s booth at the conference Expo and talk to prospective future classmates. And, following the first full day of the conference, everyone convened at a downtown Houston restaurant for an informal get-together over drinks and appetizers.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Sometimes as a woman I feel like I don\u0026rsquo;t belong and nobody understands me\u0026mdash;I know it\u0026rsquo;s shallow,\u0026rdquo; said OMS student Abida Haque. \u0026ldquo;But it\u0026rsquo;s neat to see people [at Grace Hopper] I can actually talk to. Their work is really important and makes me want to do important things. It\u0026rsquo;s inspiring.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Inspiring\u0026rdquo; was also the word Yasmine Elayyat chose to describe her time in Texas. A software engineer for Microsoft and located in Seattle, Elayyat is in her fourth semester of OMS CS and was getting the Grace Hopper experience for the first time. \u0026ldquo;You come here and see so many women doing great stuff,\u0026rdquo; she said. \u0026ldquo;I\u0026rsquo;m interested in artificial intelligence and machine learning. I went to one session and thought, \u0026lsquo;Yes, I learned this in class, I used that in a project.\u0026#39;\u0026quot;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;It would be great for middle- and high-level managers to come here and see that it\u0026rsquo;s all women giving the presentations\u0026mdash;and nobody notices. We need to make that more normal,\u0026rdquo; Brumley said. \u0026ldquo;It\u0026rsquo;s like, when you\u0026rsquo;re alone, there\u0026rsquo;s a spotlight on you. When there are two of you, there\u0026rsquo;s a bit less of a spotlight. to meet fellow students and program faculty for the first time\u0026mdash;and to hear from a Harvard professor how OMS CS has quickly changed the way the world looks at online education.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EJoshua Goodman, associate professor of public policy in Harvard\u0026rsquo;s Kennedy School of Government, described the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.hks.harvard.edu\/news-events\/news\/articles\/online-degree-program-dramatically-expands-pool-of-computer-science-students\u0022\u003Eresearch\u003C\/a\u003E he\u0026rsquo;s been conducting since 2014 that showed OMS CS has accessed a significant untapped market for advanced CS education. Comparing OMS CS applicants to a comprehensive database of college enrollments across the United States, the research found that the vast majority of applicants would not be pursuing their MS CS degrees at all if not for this program. By itself, the research predicts, OMS CS will raise the number of MS CS degree holders in the United States by 8 percent.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ECollaborating with Goodman on the work was fellow Harvard faculty member Amanda Pallais, Paul Sack Associate Professor of Political Economy and Social Studies in the Harvard Faculty of Arts and Science, and Associate Professor Julia Melkers from Georgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s School of Public Policy.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;This is the first time I\u0026rsquo;ve ever had the opportunity to talk directly to my data points,\u0026rdquo; Goodman joked to the students in attendance. \u0026ldquo;Many of you are on a spreadsheet on my desk.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHeld in the headquarters of Macmillan Learning, 46 floors above New York\u0026rsquo;s Financial District, the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/calendar\/day\/2016\/09\/29\/11191\u0022\u003Ereception\u003C\/a\u003E was hosted by Macmillan Chief Operating Officer\u0026mdash;and current OMS student\u0026mdash;Ken Brooks, a two-time graduate of Georgia Tech.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn his opening remarks, Brooks revealed that he was probably one of those \u0026ldquo;OMS or bust\u0026rdquo; students described in Goodman\u0026rsquo;s research.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;I started my career a long time ago and thought that education was done for me,\u0026rdquo; said Brooks, who earned his bachelor\u0026rsquo;s (1981) and master\u0026rsquo;s (1982) in industrial engineering from Georgia Tech. Then, he heard that an online learning company called Udacity was offering courses in computer science via a new delivery format called \u0026ldquo;MOOCs.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;This is great,\u0026rdquo; Brooks recalled thinking. \u0026ldquo;I\u0026rsquo;m going to [take those courses] before they go out of business.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ENot long afterward, Brooks saw that his alma mater had announced \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/omscs.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003Ea MOOC-based MS CS program in collaboration with Udacity and AT\u0026amp;T\u003C\/a\u003E, and he again jumped at the opportunity\u0026mdash;and was rejected admission in the first cohort. Demonstrating trademark Yellow Jacket tenacity, Brooks applied a second time, and is now in his seventh semester as an OMS student, also serving as a teaching assistant this fall.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn attendance on Sept. 29 were dozens of students just like Brooks\u0026mdash;working professionals, many with families to support, earning a degree they may not ever have been able to attain without OMS CS.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Everything [Goodman] said was right on the money,\u0026rdquo; said Scott Leitstein, who was admitted to that first cohort and graduated from OMS CS in May 2016. \u0026ldquo;If it wasn\u0026rsquo;t for this program, I would never have been able to do it. I didn\u0026rsquo;t realize I was basically quoting Josh\u0026rsquo;s research when I post and brag about this stuff.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;This [reception] has been a great opportunity,\u0026rdquo; said student Yaroslav Litvak, who works full-time as a uniformed sanitation worker for the city of New York. \u0026ldquo;In the online process, what\u0026rsquo;s missing is the physical interaction, and that\u0026rsquo;s why it\u0026rsquo;s great to be able to meet and shake hands with the people you\u0026rsquo;re working with. I had no idea Charles Isbell was that tall.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIndeed, Litvak got the measure not only of Isbell, senior associate dean and instructor for two OMS courses, but also of Zvi Galil, John P. Imlay Jr. Dean of Computing; Rich DeMillo, Charlotte B. and Roger C. Warren Professor of Computing and former dean of the College; and College faculty and OMS instructors David Joyner, Alex Orso, and Kishore Ramachandran.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;We are here because OMS CS has become a phenomenon,\u0026rdquo; Galil said in his remarks, citing the 12,000 applications the program has received in three years, as well as the 3,944 students enrolled this semester, the 111 graduates it\u0026rsquo;s produced to date, and the 900+ media articles that have covered OMS CS since it was announced. Galil also cited the fact that computing is a field in the United States that has many, many more job openings than there are qualified graduates to fill them.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;We might be one of very few universities addressing a national need,\u0026rdquo; Most students will pay less than $7,000 for a graduate degree from Georgia Tech\u2019s top 10 College of Computing. The traditional master\u2019s program can cost nearly $45,000 for on-campus students.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cSince we announced the online Master of Science in Computer Science last May, our goal has been to create the best possible academic experience for our online students, just as we try to do for all of Georgia Tech\u2019s residential students,\u201d said Georgia Tech Provost Rafael L. That number exceeds the total number of fall 2013 applicants (1,806) to all of the college\u2019s on-campus MS programs and is a 74 percent increase over the applications received for the on-campus MS CS program.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAnother interesting statistic is that 85 percent of applications were from U.S. citizens or residents \u2014 almost exactly the inverse of the U.S.\/international ratio among applicants to the on-campus program.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cWe thought we might get 1,000 applications, perhaps 1,500 if we were lucky,\u201d said College of Computing Dean Zvi Galil. \u201cThe fact that we almost doubled the number of MS CS applications shows that this program is addressing a real gap in computing education, not to mention a tremendous need on the part of students.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EOf the roughly 1,950 students not admitted for spring 2014, several hundred may be offered deferred admission in subsequent terms.
