Extensive testing on Georgia Tech’s network shows that the issue exists outside of Georgia Tech’s network, possibly with Steam’s network.

OIT has contacted Steam’s support team to attempt to resolve the issue, but was referred to CS:GO forums for help instead. Unfortunately, Georgia Tech cannot troubleshoot the issue further without Steam’s assistance.

If you are experiencing issues playing CS:GO on campus, we recommend contacting Steam support and encouraging them to work with Georgia Tech on resolving this issue. In the meantime, please try the workarounds below.

Workarounds

The issue with servers does not seem to occur when users are connected to the Georgia Tech VPN. (OIT believes this may be due to the fact that the VPN uses a different IP address space than the ResNet and GTwifi networks.) To install the VPN, go tohttps://anyc.vpn.gatech.edu, login with your Georgia Tech credentials, then follow the instructions. Then connect to the VPN before launching Steam when you play CS:GO.

Several users report that Steam works best through the Georgia Tech VPN when launched in TCP mode. You can find instructions on how to do this on Steam's support page.

Users also report that they are able to connect to official CS:GO servers when connected to GTother on LAWN. (GTother uses an address space similar to the Georgia Tech VPN.) To connect to GTother, follow the instructions athttp://lawn.gatech.edu/help/gtother/.

  <status>1</status> <created>1440950443</created> <gmt_created>2015-08-30 16:00:43</gmt_created> <changed>1653584976</changed> <gmt_changed>2022-05-26 17:09:36</gmt_changed> <promote>0</promote> <sticky>0</sticky> <teaser>CS:GO players are unable to connect to game servers from campus networks</teaser> <type>news</type> <sentence>CS:GO players are unable to connect to game servers from campus networks</sentence>

CS:GO players are unable to connect to game servers from campus networks

  <dateline>2015-08-30T00:00:00-04:00</dateline> <iso_dateline>2015-08-30T00:00:00-04:00</iso_dateline> <gmt_dateline>2015-08-30 00:00:00</gmt_dateline>

  <sidebar></sidebar>
support@wrecktechs.gatech.edu
  <location></location> <contact>
Contact the Wreck Techs for further assistance. - Phone:
</contact> <boilerplate></boilerplate> <boilerplate_text></boilerplate_text> <media>
441791
      </media> <hg_media>
          <nid>441791</nid> <type>image</type>
Wreck Techs Logo (Square)

                      <image_name>wreck_techs_main_blue.png</image_name> <image_path>/sites/default/files/images/wreck_techs_main_blue_0.png</image_path> <image_full_path>http://www.tlwarc.hg.gatech.edu//sites/default/files/images/wreck_techs_main_blue_0.png</image_full_path> <image_740>http://www.tlwarc.hg.gatech.edu/sites/default/files/styles/740xx_scale/public/sites/default/files/images/wreck_techs_main_blue_0.png?itok=G31yse9D</image_740> <image_mime>image/png</image_mime> <image_alt>Wreck Techs Logo (Square)</image_alt> <created>1449256190</created> <gmt_created>2015-12-04 19:09:50</gmt_created> <changed>1475895179</changed> <gmt_changed>2016-10-08 02:52:59</gmt_changed>
      </hg_media> <related> </related> <files> </files> <groups> <group id="440701">Wreck Techs</group> </groups> <categories>
Computer Science/Information Technology and Security
      </categories> <news_terms> <term tid="153">Computer Science/Information Technology and Security</term> </news_terms> <keywords> </keywords> <core_research_areas> </core_research_areas> <news_room_topics> </news_room_topics> <files></files> <related></related> <userdata> </userdata></node><node id="441231">
Students Have New Options for Printing on Campus
  <uid>27164</uid>

As an on-campus student, you’ll likely need to print on campus. With more than 70 printers available in some 45 locations, you have plenty of options.

In March, the Office of Information Technology upgraded its printing system, Pharos, and added the convenience of printing from mobile devices as well as from multiple print stations around campus. All students, both new and returning, must create a new account if printing for the first time since the March upgrade. To create an account, simply swipe your BuzzCard at any print release station. Once your account has been created, you can use your weekly allocation of $2.20 to print using one of the following options.

Printing from a Lab or Cluster

When printing from one of the desktops in the Library Commons, or from a lab or cluster, select the name of the printer from the Print dialog box, make any print configuration changes such as paper size or number of pages, then go to a print release station located nearby. Swipe your BuzzCard to release the job. Your job will remain in the printer queue for two hours before it’s deleted.

Using Your Mobile Device

You can print using your mobile device (phone or tablet) by sending the print job as an attachment from your email address. First, you’ll need to register the email account or accounts you’ll be using by swiping your BuzzCard at a print release station. Once your address is registered, all you need to do is send your job to print@gatech.edu for black-and-white double-sided printouts; printblack@gatech.edu for black-and-white single-sided printouts, and printcolor@gatech.edu for color single-sided printouts. You can release your print job from My Print Center (myprintcenter.gatech.edu) or from a print release station located on campus after swiping your BuzzCard. Please note that you must be on a campus network (VPN, GTWifi, etc.) to use mobile printing features.

Using Your Personal Laptop or Desktop

You can print from your laptop or desktop as long as you’re connected to the campus network. You’ll need to download the Pharos software and drivers, and select the type of print job (black-and-white, color, stapled, etc.) and the printer you want to use. You’ll have up to two hours to retrieve your job from a print release station before it’s deleted from the print queue. To access the printing software and print locations, go to www.software.oit.gatech.edu. For detailed instructions on printing from your laptop or desktop, refer to the FAQ at https://faq.oit.gatech.edu/content/how-do-i-use-student-oit-laptop-printing.

Using the Web Portal

If you’re on the campus network (LAWN, VPN, etc.), you can upload any print job to the Pharos print center portal, My Print Center (https://myprintcenter.gatech.edu), and select the campus printer you’d like to use. Choose this option when you don’t want to download any client software or print drivers, or when you’d like to select print settings for files sent from your mobile device. Your job will remain in the printer queue for two hours before it’s deleted.

Printing Bulk Documents

If you need to print a large quantity of documents, it is recommended that you send the job to Central Printing Services. They print large jobs and deliver to bins located on the second floor of the Student Center, organized by last name and first initial. Deliveries are made three times a day, except on Saturday and Sunday. Every student is given a quota of 1,200 pages per semester for bulk printing. Just make sure you’re following copyright compliance for printing materials. To use Central Printing Services, go to https://central-ps.gatech.edu. While it is virtually impossible to prevent all data breaches, it’s still a good idea to heed cybersecurity tips to reduce the possibility of damage from such breaches. Georgia Tech’s cybersecurity experts Jason Belford and Jimmy Lummis from the Office of Information Technology recommend the following:

Use Strong Passwords and Safeguard Them

To keep data secure, create strong passwords using a series of letters, numbers, and special characters. Don’t use common pieces of information, such as the names of family members, old and current addresses, schools attended, etc., that cybercriminals can find from social media sites or from public data. Become familiar with Tech’s policies on strong passwords at http://www.policylibrary.gatech.edu/information-technology/passwords.

Use a variety of passwords to prevent hackers from accessing financial, medical, and social sites with one password.

Don’t forget about online email sites. If an email account is listed in an online banking profile and that email account is hijacked, a cybercriminal can click “Forgot Username/Password” to gain access to your banking data.

Don’t store passwords online in a browser or enable the browser to “remember” a password. If the password is stored in a browser, this creates easy access for hackers.

Change passwords every three months, and use password managers such as Lastpass to help generate and store passwords. Georgia Tech offers Lastpass to students, faculty, and staff. Visit https://faq.oit.gatech.edu/content/lastpass-faq for more information.

Use a dual, or two-factor, authentication for a second layer of security. Many websites, including Gmail, Amazon, PayPal, and Twitter, now offer two-factor authentication. The second level of protection, often a randomly generated number, creates a second wall of protection against cybercriminals.

Create tough security questions that link your password to your identity. Georgia Tech’s Passport (Personal Account Self-Service Portal www.passport.gatech.edu) offers the option to set up a series of questions that a user is required to answer in the case of a forgotten password. These questions, called “hints” on Passport, offer additional levels of security.

Recognize Phishing and Spoofing Attempts

Phishing occurs when a cybercriminal attempts to get a user to submit personal information online. This can take the form of email messages asking for money; a link that, when clicked, downloads a virus; or spoofed websites or login pages designed to look like the real thing. To avoid falling prey to phishing or spoofing schemes, check all URLs by hovering over the link or Web address to see the full address. A secure site always includes an https in the address bar and a reputable site name. Be wary if, for instance, an email from someone who appears to be from Georgia Tech has a click here in the body that reveals the here as http://gatechupgrade.dfjsdh422tgs.com. That’s clearly not a sanctioned Georgia Tech site because an authentic Tech site will always contain the “.gatech.edu” in the URL. Keep in mind, there may be some instances in which a site is simply changing its look — in which case the URL remains the same, so that’s safe. For example, even though Passport recently upgraded to a new look, the URL address remained the same.

Limit Data Shared on Social Media Sites

Never put anything online that you do not want everyone to know, and check privacy settings regularly. Social sites often change privacy settings, and it’s not uncommon for previous settings to be reset to their default status, so check them often and make sure to check all of them. For instance, Facebook has a Privacy setting, but it also has a Security setting. And there’s a separate site for mobile devices that are linked to social sites.

Don’t view videos or download software from sites that aren’t secure or haven’t been vetted by the social community. For example, YouTube is safe as a portal, but a cybercriminal can set up a channel to lure users to click on a link designed to unleash malware (malicious software) that can infect a desktop, laptop, or mobile device.

Beef up Physical Security

Keep your PCs, tablets, mobile devices, software, external drives, etc., in your possession to prevent data from being stolen.
