His team Genspace brought home a gold medal for synthetic biology work on two devices and creating 11 new BioBrick\u0026nbsp;parts,\u0026nbsp;standardized DNA\u0026nbsp;building blocks used to design and assemble synthetic biological circuits. The team, which included fellow alumna\u0026nbsp;Christal\u0026nbsp;Gordon,\u0026nbsp;MS,\u0026nbsp;PhD\u0026nbsp;EE,\u0026nbsp;also won an award for best community lab\u0026nbsp;for the work centered around the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/2015.igem.org\/Team:Genspace\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EGowanus Canal\u003C\/a\u003E.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p2\u0022\u003EOn his path to iGEM, Migliozzi studied\u0026nbsp;human-computer interaction at Georgia Tech\u0026nbsp;and was often found working with various research groups on campus to learn about\u0026nbsp;biology-related work. He admits his HCI graduate thesis was a bit abnormal, being centered around bio-hobbyists growing mushrooms.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p2\u0022\u003EResearchers that had some of the biggest impact on the alum were in the Digital Media program - advisor Carl DiSalvo and Andrew Quitmeyer among them - and they encouraged him to\u0026nbsp;explore his research connecting biology and technology.\u0026nbsp;Migliozzi\u0026nbsp;managed to start a DIY bio-lab in a corner of the Technology Square Research Building - not normally a building for fauna\u0026nbsp;and petri dishes - and for a short time he commandeered the Digital Media program\u2019s refrigerator\u0026nbsp;as a research\u0026nbsp;compost bin.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p2\u0022\u003E\u201cI was very lucky to work with and learn from several groups around campus, namely\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.arkfab.org\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EArkFab\u003C\/a\u003E, the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.astrobiology.gatech.edu\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EAstrobiology group\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;and within Tucker Balch\u0027s\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.bio-tracking.org\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EBio-Tracking project\u003C\/a\u003E\u201d says Migliozzi, now a\u0026nbsp;data visualization developer for Bloomberg News in NYC. \u201cThose years were formative for me in my continued love of\u0026nbsp;biology.\u201d\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p2\u0022\u003EHe says that the iGEM award is one of the biggest accomplishments of his life and gives credit to his experience at Georgia Tech.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p2\u0022\u003E\u201cI hope both the HCI and Digital Media programs continue to be as interdisciplinary as possible,\u201d he says. \u201cI encourage students to seek out research across campus and I hope other\u0026nbsp;departments invite these students in with open arms.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp class=\u0022p2\u0022\u003E\u201cStudents like Blacki are wonderful \u2014 they challenge us to grow and learn.
