All around the world, we’re seeing new stadiums named after large corporations – and School of Architecture Associate Professor Benjamin Flowers says that stadium names now reflect financial success and neglect local identity.

“These names are not only placeless, but also largely ahistorical. They reference nothing about the team’s past, nor say much about its future,“ wrote Flowers in an article published in Stadia Magazine. Stadia Magazine brings together the views and ideas of leading experts around the world in the area of sports venue design, operations, and technologies. That’s why they asked Flowers for his opinions on the evolution of stadium dedications around the world.

Flowers brings his expertise in stadia design to the Georgia Tech School of Architecture. He sees architecture as inherently affected by politics, culture, and economy. Flowers has a particular interest in large scale design and construction and how these projects relate to and influence how we live every day in cities.
